I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

If they want to save small business, like mine, the Fed better back the insurance companies and make them mark a 'government forced shutdown due to pandemic' a reason for business interruption insurance to kick in. Right now, my policy like 99% of the rest of the country, only covers physical damage that prevents your business from opening.
Payroll tax holiday won't do shirt for small businesses.
That's an interesting idea. I suspect the government will need to provide a bailout to the insurance industry but that might be less complicated than bailing out small businesses directly. The biggest problem I see right offhand is that re-writing contracts is prohibited by basic contract law - but maybe the government and the insurance industry could reach an agreement for the good of the country.

But otherwise, I'm all for the government pulling out the stops to save small businesses. I wish yours the best.

If you are talking about what this virus is being called, you are taking the bait. Trump and his failing administration would love nothing more than for you to be talking about that than to be focused on the continued failed response to this pandemic by him and his administration. Just now in a press conference, trump was griping about not being given credit while still lying about availability of supplies to the people on the frontline who actually need it. This child cannot stop lying and he can't put the good of the country first even during a real national emergency. Please stop entertaining these post about the damn name. We have never needed a competent leader more than we do now and we are stuck with a petulant child.

If you don't want a virus named after your country, dont create a pandemic. Logic.

How did they "create" a pandemic? That's a weird way to phrase that.

The virus started in Wuhan. It was not known what it was at the time, as it was novel. It takes time for the medical community to recognize and understand what was happening, it takes even longer for governments to accept that it's happening.

There was a period between the medical community in China understanding what was going on and the Chinese government acceptance of the virus spread where the Chinese government did the usual authoritarian move of clamping down information, denying any problems, punishing dissenters, etc. that allowed to virus to spread. They deserve a lot of criticism and condemnation for that and they got it from their own citizens and the world over, but that's not the same as creating a pandemic. A pandemic isn't created in just one country, it's the lack of ability to control the spread (which falls on all other countries and government) that creates the pandemic.

Coincidentally, that's not unlike the months that passed here in the US where our own government played down the problem and accused the media/democrats of heightening fears, there just wasn't the punishing of dissenters.

Since that initial period and once they accepted the reality of what was happening, the Chinese government has done everything it can to stop and slow the spread of the virus (again, with that usual authoritarian bent). And again, not unlike our own government has done this week.

It's not about what the Chinese government is saying or doing, it's about what we do. You're just deflecting because you don't have a good response and you know I'm saying the truth. You just can't admit to yourself the huge role Trump plays in all of this, so you insist on blaming everybody else except for the person primarily responsible.

If Trump doesn't do what he always does, nobody would be accusing him or racism (like I said, it's more so deflection by way of xenophobic fear but people will call it racism), but he always defaults to the same playbook.

He could stop all this today by just calling it coronovirus, but he won't.

As far as I am concerned, it doesn't bother me in the least that you guys want to blame Trump. I knew that was coming from the first time I became aware that the virus was coming here.

That's not to say that Trump handled this well from the very beginning, I don't believe he did. But, I am not exactly going to give the posts from the left on this board a lot of weight either. I am more inclined to consider criticisms of Trump that I read in our top secret conservative playhouse. Yes, there are criticisms back there and no one is calling each other names or trying to silence those criticisms.

So, go ahead and criticize Trump. I don't care.

But, China's handling of the virus is absolutely an issue that is worthy of discussion. That discussion is not going to stop no matter how loudly people scream the magic words of "racism" and "xenophobia."

    Cant happen.

You are asking a government to force a private company to do something.

I know what we can do!

We can talk about the effects of the coronavirus on the call for open boarders and the cities and states that refuse to share illegal immigrant info with the federal government.

Gee, I always wondered how the push to allow undocumented immigrants to live among us would dovetail with the health and sanitation laws enacted to stop small pox and other communicable diseases in late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Most of those laws are still on the books, in one form or another and they kick in when a national health emergency is declared . . . like, uh . . . now!

Had his handling of the pandemic been even somewhat different than his handling of anything else, you might have a point
All ‘the left’ has been saying is ‘this is what we’ve been telling you could happen for 3 1/2 years when you put someone wholly unqualified into one of the most demanding jobs ‘
Not our fault that people didn’t listen (meta)

What enforcement of laws actual or theoretical would have stymied the spread of the virus?

    I know you don't.

When you call it the "Chinese Virus", that's not the same as discussing China's handling of the virus. Nobody is trying to stop that conversation.

And while it's easy for you to act like there's no ill effect from Trump's instance on calling it the Chinese virus, I don't think that Asian people here in America who are attacked, assaulted or assailed by ignorant people because of the coronovirus would agree with you.

I love how this goes back to illegal immigrants.

Are you gonna frame houses? Are you gonna pick strawberries? Are you gonna work for giant landscape companies or maintain golf courses?

Nope I didn't think so. But the illegal immigrants make it so you can afford a house, food, and everything you enjoy.

I would for once love for one of the hating on the illegal immigrants crowd to at least acknowledge that paying an actual wage to non immigrants would effect your bottom line.

What the plan for MERS? Got a new name for it? We need to the let the CDC know so they can update their website so as not possibly hurting someones feelings in the world.

You can't enforce health and sanitation laws on a population of unlawful, undocumented, non-citizens.
Say, how are the tent cities of people living and pooping on the sidewalks in San Francisco and Seattle holding up?
I understand San Fran has put everybody on lockdown. How does that even work with undocumented people living in tents on the sidewalk?
    Simple answer: It doesn't.

    @Beach Friends
Republicans and conservatives shouldn’t hide their criticisms.

From the beginning I said I don’t care what we call the virus. I’m now leaning toward this should be labeled Wuhan/China flu to remind the world that China not only hid this from the world but arrested those who spoke out. Even some liberal publicans are calling out China. It’s a push back on authoritative governance. Yes, Trump will use China as an excuse like he does for everything. The virus and China’s actions are bigger than Trump and the world needs to shift away from China.

Are you suggesting that it wasn't the exact same way for Obama?
It wasn't. He had adoring crowds chanting his name all over the world when he was elected,
Trump had opposition protests and riots in the streets in a dozen cities in the US when he was elected.
No, I'm not suggesting it wasn't the exact same way for Obama.
I'm saying straight up, it wasn't.

Joe we can at least all agree this hate you have for China did not stop you from owning the most maga loved american thing in the whole world.

    Your hog.

Post pictures of that great American 40% Chinese Harley on fire or stop spouting your bull crap.

haha.. I don;t hate China... Nor am I boycotting any Chinese products... But you just proved my whole point... Without parts from China none of our vehicles would run.. We'd be shut down worse than we are now...

But go ahead and sit on you couch playing xbox on your chinese TV..... Put them Nikes on and pretend that China is our Best ally and they want US manufacturing to succeed.. Oh... And don't forget to Thank the Good old USA for that $1,000 check coming your way while you continue to complain about the government.
