I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Please tell me where I have called the US evil? I have done no such thing and you know it! Pointing out the double standard when dealing with two politicians from 2 different countries are NOT what you accuse me off.

Since you previously accused the U.S. of genocide I don't think it's a stretch to find that you consider our nation evil.

In the discussion of whether China is evil you apparently think the U.S. is at best the equivalent of China, or else I don't know why you are making the comparison.

Maybe you're just in the mood to defend the Chinese government today. Seems strange considering how quick you are to offer your insight into just how bad we are.

I have done some general clean up in this thread. It isn’t living up to the standards of respectful debate at the moment.

what's the zero sum game people are playing where someone saying to repeat/amplify xenophobic things, is the same as supporting a totalitarian regime?

Please elaborate when you throw out accusations like that.

It's serving its purpose, because people are debating how mad we should be at China instead of talking about how dismissively Trump treated this situation until - checks calendar - five days ago.

I don't care in the least what anyone wants to call a virus, but I do think it's pretty helpful that if you hear someone mention "Chinese virus" in a social conversation, like "fake news" or red hats before it, you have an instant social cue that you should probably excuse yourself and find someone else in the room to talk to.
Same people that would have argued the legitimacy of calling Aids the gay plague and spent the prior weeks calling this overblown hype to drag down dear leader.... People more concerned with maintaining their racist culture wars over concern for people’s lives.

I'll bet the Trump defenders can't name one *helpful* act Trump has done since January until last week, except of course for the travel bans. It was the only tool in his arsenal until he finally let experts have some say.

There will be plenty of time to dissect the US response to this in the coming months. I think it's fair to say that no one thinks Trump nailed his response to the pandemic.

While I believe we bungled our initial response, it's tough to predict how much better we'd be off if we did everything perfect. I think we're still looking at lockdowns.

Maybe if we had been fully prepped, we would have done travel bans for everywhere back at the beginning of February, and aggressive testing, and then targeted lockdowns.

Honestly, I’m just at the point where such fights aren’t really worth it. There was a time maybe 10 years ago where there was at least an attempt of intellectual consistency and honesty with the vast majority of Republicans.

But whatever residuals were left died with Trump.

Just yesterday NPR released a poll that over half of Republicans, in line with Trumps bullshirt, now believe the corona response is overblown. Up double digits since he started calling it fake news(which will likely shift as he does)

It’s like a collective mass of people entirely driven by their personal sunk cost fallacy, self-delusion capacity, and sports brain mentality about politics.

What they once called socialism and radical is suddenly proof of Trumps compassion when he does it. Where principles are replace by endless rationalizations.

There is no meaningful discussion to be had when reality and intellectual honesty is set aside for unapologetic tribalism. Where you try and argue facts and reason with people that value neither.

Lockdowns, social distancing, federal mobilization, that should have happened weeks ago by even his own experts(which he ignored, silenced, or pushed aside). That is the problem.

People have and(barring a miracle) are going to die because of this incompetence.

    Or how about this...

Now is not the time to be grading leaders on a curve Imo

Trump’s delays in treating this seriously may not yet have impacted us. The real problem may be if we run short of ICU beds so more people die than would’ve otherwise died. Our economy may also have taken a much smaller blow if we had started these measures and testing earlier. This has been one of the worst managed crisis ever, and we don’t yet know how bad.

Maybe, but I suspect it's a very small group.
    Is it?

"Voters split sharply along party lines: Only 10 percent of Democratic voters rate Trump’s handling of the situation as “excellent” or “good,” compared with 80 percent of Republicans who give Trump those ratings."

80% of Republicans is not a "very small" group.

I think this is exceptionally stressful for a bunch of you.

Take a deep breath. This is an opportunity to work on yourself.

Go for walks and stay away from people. So do something productive.

Yes we as a world have to work together to kick this virus in the arse. I really don't see how offending China is gonna help any. They have valuable data we as a nation and we as a world desperately need.

This is WW2 right now. GM and Ford are in talks of ventilator building for the nation in the factories they shut down today.

Working together is the answer here.
