I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. strode onto the stage at a Southern California church, radiating Kennedy confidence and surveying the standing ovation crowd with his piercing blue Bobby Kennedy eyes. Then, he launched into an anti-vaccine rant. Democrats “drank the Kool-Aid,” he told people assembled for a far right conference, branded as standing for “health and freedom.”

“It is criminal medical malpractice to give a child one of these vaccines,” Kennedy contended, according to a video of the event, one of his many assertions that ignored or went against legal, scientific and public health consensus.

Then, Kennedy hawked his book. If just 300 attendees preordered it on Amazon that night, he told the crowd, it would land on the bestseller list and they could “stick it to Amazon and Jeff Bezos.”

All profits, he said, would go to his charity, Children’s Health Defense……

According to data from Similarweb, a digital intelligence company that analyzes web traffic and search, Children’s Health Defense has become one of the most popular “alternative and natural medicine sites” in the world, reaching a peak of nearly 4.7 million visits per month. That’s up from less than 150,000 monthly visits before the pandemic.

As Children’s Health Defense has worked to expand its influence, experts said, it has targeted its false claims at groups that may be more prone to distrust the vaccine, including mothers and Black Americans.

It’s a strategy that experts worry has deadly consequences during a pandemic that has killed more than 5 million people, when misinformation has been deemed a threat to public health……

Looks like nothing we didn't already know (or suspect)

Shouldn't there be some sort of charges on this?

A new report from the House Committee on Oversight and Reform — the main investigative body of the House of Representatives — found that the Trump administration undermined the country's COVID-19 pandemic response for political purposes.

The report, first written about by CNN and conducted under the auspices of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, includes numerous findings that have already been released this year. But the report also includes new evidence of what the committee called "deliberate efforts to undermine the nation's coronavirus response for political purposes."

According to the report, the Trump administration also weakened COVID-19 testing guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) while blocking media briefings by the public health agency.

After a February 25, 2020 briefing in which then-CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Director Dr. Nancy Messonnier warned about the dangers of the virus, former President Donald Trump was angered and blocked the health agency's requests to conduct public briefings for three months.

"That is the feeling that we had, many of us had," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a CDC official, when asked by the committee about whether she and others at the agency felt "muzzled" by the administration.

Dr. Deborah Birx, who served as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator under Trump, wrote in an email released by the committee that she would be skipping a meeting that included many proponents of a "herd immunity" response to the pandemic.

"I can't be part of this with these people who believe in herd immunity," Birx wrote in an August 2020 email to Marc Short, then the chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence. "They are a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience.".............

At the end of that article there is a link to the House study report:

It's 46 page document which gives details that I have not seen before. (or suspected) Indeed there are many charges which ought to be taken from there to become criminal charges brought against many persons in government and in industry.

I recommend everyone here read that report. Perhaps a new thread should be started for the discussions which can be derived from what I think there is there. Trump's gang raided the national piggy bank. It looks to me like they stole billions.

Some people are just plain stupid!!

I had a meeting last week - 6 people in a small room. If you are vaccinated you get a Covid "passport that shows that you are fully vaccinated but with the new Omicron variation everyone is told to self isolate even with a minor cold. 3 of us wore masks, the other 3 did not - all were fully vaccinated but one clearly had a cold. The day after the meeting we were informed that he had tested positive for Covid 19 in the evening the day before - just hours after our meeting.

So now after staying safe for more than 18 month - I've got Omicron! Just because one person thought a face to face meeting were more important than following the official guidelines!!

Sorry, Dragon! hope your case is very mild. I’m sure that is very frustrating.

it just shows how careful you need to be with this one. He was fully vaccinated AND wore a mask. I am fully vaccinated AND wore a mask.

Omicron is game changer and a very serious one. I fear what it can do in the US with all the anti-vaxers and GÒP undermining of even basic precautions. I hope that people wake up before it is too late...

I'm quoting your post again because I have completed my read of that 46 page document that outlines the report from the House Committee on Oversight and Reform your post was about.

I'm happy to say the Biden administration and Congress has our back. There are charges on this. The fraud detailed in the report have complaints and indictments in progress working their way through our courts. Here's a list of those cases with docket numbers:

    65 United States v. Robert S. Stewart, Jr., 1:21-CR-00005 (E.D. Va. Feb. 3, 2021)

(This case has completed and Stewart is in prison. It involves a wild attempt to defraud the government for almost 40 million, which is detailed in this report)

it just shows how careful you need to be with this one.

I think I've read that Omicron is much more contagious than even Delta...
Take holidays + people getting together + antivax = a lot more of it will get spread around and deaths will happen

The latest estimates calls for potentially 45K NEW infections on christmas eve - That is 45K in ONE day (pop. 5,5M)

It is more contagious. The good news is it appears to be less deadly if you are vaccinated or suffered a prior infection. The bottom line is still get vaccinated and don't worry. The shot may not prevent you from catching the virus or spreading it. It does greatly lower you chances of dying or being hospitalized.

    To the point above:

Thanks for posting that. That is good news. I've been worried about that because my county is heavily Republican, and our vaccination rate is in the 40 percentile range. We've been getting hammered for the last three months.

They don't care. I was at the supermarket a couple days ago, after the mask mandate was reinstated in our state. Myself and two others were the only people in the store wearing masks. None of the store employees were wearing them. The sheriff has already said they will do nothing about it.

With Omicron there are going to be a lot of breakthrough cases, but they should be very mild for the vaccinated. Milder than the flu, I heard a doctor say on tv this morning. More like a cold.

Trump lost control of the monster he created by downplaying Covid
    =======================================

Supporters of former President Donald Trump booed and jeered when he announced on Sunday that he had received a COVID-19 booster shot and was in favor of the vaccine.

Trump made the comments during an appearance on the former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's "History Tour." Newsweek first reported on the remarks.

At the tour, Trump noted that the COVID-19 vaccine was developed under his administration as part of Operation Warp Speed. "Look, we did something that was historic, we saved tens of millions of lives worldwide when we, together, all of us, we got a vaccine done," Trump said.

"This was going to ravage the country far beyond what it is right now, take credit for it," Trump said. "It's great, what we've done is historic. Don't let them take it away."

The former president drew cheers from the crowd when he said that he was opposed to vaccine mandates, adding, "If you don't want to take it, you shouldn't be forced to take it, no mandates."

But the crowd's reaction shifted when Trump and O'Reilly revealed they were both vaccinated and had gotten booster shots............
