I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

While I was looking at that guys Twitter I saw something pretty telling, if you ask me:

    A. why would this “prominent doctor” be asked by a writer to do research on a drug that had already been researched (more than once, IIRC) and then he acts like it’s some sort of scandal because she won’t jump to do his request?

    B. There isn’t any evidence for Taibbi’s claim. Not any credible research. It just confirms to me what I thought about him in the first place. These guys are part of the group that are trying to deny what science is showing us.

    A. It sounds like the writer wasn't the one who asked her to research Ivermectin. I think he was asking why she previously refused to research it.

Why wouldn't we want to research anything that might have showed minimal or preliminary effectiveness against Covid especially a year ago when we knew less about Covid?

Oxford started a large-scale clinical trial for Ivermectin being a possible treatment in July of this year:

With known antiviral properties, ivermectin has been shown to reduce SARS-CoV-2 replication in laboratory studies. Small pilot studies show that early administration with ivermectin can reduce viral load and the duration of symptoms in some patients with mild COVID-19. Even though ivermectin is used routinely in some countries to treat COVID-19, there is little evidence from large-scale randomised controlled trials to demonstrate that it can speed up recovery from the illness or reduce hospital admission.

I don't think Ivermectin works with Covid, but why wouldn't we fully research it?

    B. You might want to go back to the original tweet from Taibbi. He wasn't talking about Ivermectin. You jumped to a conclusion due to confirmation bias.

So what makes you think that Ivermectin hasn’t been researched? Or even that I wouldn’t want it researched? That’s a huge straw man you‘re toting around there. I know it has been researched, the study that started this June isn’t the first, I read about one before June that was finished, just waiting on peer review to be published. And as many people as want to can research it until the cows (horses?) come home. It’s not shown anything yet.

I jumped to a conclusion because the guy you brought up quoted that tweet while he was talking about Ivermectin. So no, it was a logical conclusion that the quoted tweet was also about Ivermectin, not confirmation bias. Nice try, though, lol.

What does health insurance have to do with the COVID vaccine though? I got mine through the City of New Orleans even though I have health insurance. It's free and available to anyone who wants it through the state or city they live in. Count me in for M4A though.

It's a correlation, not a causation. Ask the question who doesn't have health insurance? The young, poor, and those who don't take their health seriously? You could also make the argument that the uninsured are not accustomed to preventive medicine, IE not getting flu shots either.

This just has to be up there with the demon sperm doctor
    ========================

Gov. Chris Sununu said Monday he supports removing Rep. Ken Weyler as chairman of the powerful Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee following Weyler’s continued dissemination of unproven and outlandish claims about the COVID-19 vaccine, including octopus-like creatures living in the vaccine and vaccinated parents having babies with “pitch black” eyes and premature aging…….

“I have repeatedly expressed directly to Speaker Packard about the need to remove Rep. Weyler from this position of leadership, and these latest absurd emails have accelerated the urgency that the speaker needs to take action,” Sununu said Monday after Weyler sent committee members an unsupported report written by two anti-vaccine advocates.

In addition to claims about octopus-like creatures living in the vaccine, the report, recently debunked by PolitiFact, also alleged COVID-19 death counts are inflated and that the Spanish flu killed only those who had been vaccinated. “Disseminating this misinformation clearly shows a detachment from reality and lack of judgment,” Sununu said.

Weyler, a Kingston Republican, sent the material to committee members as they prepare to vote on $27 million in federal contracts for vaccination outreach.……..

Yes, it’s a classic correlation not causation. And fixable with more education. IMO this will resolve itself with a little more time for employer mandates to take effect, and more public education.

Belief in conspiracy theories about being magnetized, having miscarriages, being chipped, having fatal complications, etc. would be correlation with causation though. We should really pay attention to this aspect, because it’s a threat to everyone to have people believing this wild shirt.

To get back to SFL’s post on A

You’re probably right there. But it has been researched, so why would he expect her to do it when others already have?

That right there is what it comes down to. Politics. Republican led states consistently take away/reduce/don’t fund health care. They also govern states that have a generally poorer population that cannot afford health insurance.

Also, they have been consistent against mask usage, social distancing, on and on. The whole democrats/socialists/communists out to get them also plays well in these areas. So you have a great bed to seed anti vaccination. I’d be willing to bet the homeless in CA have a better immunization rate than Wyoming, as they were one of the first groups the state focused on, and they were very willing to get it.

I compare my home state of Montana where this summer the governor stripped away any and all health mandates and restrictions, even making an executive order hospitals couldn’t require health care workers to be vaccinated to the 5 county San Fran area here. San Fran jumped on everything as quick as possible, have the highest vaccine rates in the nation, and have for the most part done very well in dealing with this.

Those type of Republicans are nuts, but you have to understand is that a huge part of being a Republican is personal freedom, individuality, and a tiny tiny government. I have a bit of a libertarian trait, but I have no issues with mandatory vaccines at the work place, mask usage, and social distancing. I live in Maryland which is 90% vaccinated with at least one shot and always sit outside when dining out. This polarization is sickening and we are heading full force into tribalism.

As usual those in the left are more docile with regards to accepting government mandates.

    Two things:

You say you have no issue with vaccine or mask mandates yet you describe those who willingly comply as “docile” which is an unusual way to describe people following the rules you say you have no problem with

You might as well have said sheep

You could have said “as usual those on the right are more stubborn with regards to accepting government mandates” which would have made more sense if you truly had no issue with the mandates

Second, one could argue that your “as usual” statement isn’t accurate and a more true statement would be

“As usual those on the left didn’t NEED an government mandate to get vaccinated”

    OP
I cannot disagree with your post.

lets check in and see what is going on in FL...

A Miami school that made headlines for saying it would penalize teachers who got the COVID-19 vaccine is now requiring students who get vaccinated to remain home for 30 days after each dose.
