I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I know the Bee is the Onion for the alt right but this makes perfectly reasonable sense to me. If a person is too obsessed with their political convictions to accept the reality of science and common sense they shouldn't take away resources from the reasonable people.

This is an apt metaphor for the bat shirt crazy from Abbott:

Also, heard on tv that Jim Jordan, who seems to be dumb as a rock, is now advocating getting rid of all vaccine mandates. Including measles and polio. Is this where the GOP wants to be? This is just crazy as all get out.

Yeah, I saw that too. He is full on insane. Bring back polio! MAGA!

Who determines who is reasonable and unreasonable and who gave them that power?

Hmmm. Is vax status a marker for actually getting COVID? The underlying health issues mean nothing if said person doesn’t get COVID. Sure, underlying health issues carry their own potentially mortality. However, what causes the underlying health problems?

People with certain comorbidities "are more likely to get Covid and have worse outcomes."

I’ve never heard anyone say that certain co-morbidities makes it more likely to “catch” Covid. Unless you really mean that they are more likely to have symptoms? I’m pretty sure if you have sufficient exposure to the virus and are not immune through vaccination or other natural means, you will contract the virus. Your CDC link doesn’t say what you have in quotes in your post.

While I was looking at that guys Twitter I saw something pretty telling, if you ask me:

    A. why would this “prominent doctor” be asked by a writer to do research on a drug that had already been researched (more than once, IIRC) and then he acts like it’s some sort of scandal because she won’t jump to do his request?

    B. There isn’t any evidence for Taibbi’s claim. Not any credible research. It just confirms to me what I thought about him in the first place. These guys are part of the group that are trying to deny what science is showing us.

Again, what are the rates for unvaccinated people? Comorbidities have a much higher impact on end results. What about long haulers? What is the impact on the economy of unvaccinated people and long haulers? What is the impact on healthcare providers (can’t say system since there is no system)?

Politics of the virus? No. Politics of the concepts of healthcare access and payment as well as costing? Yes. I suggest the book “The Hospital” by Brian Alexander. It is about a small town hospital in Bryan, OH.
