I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

That plan was designed to be implemented before the pandemic reached out shores. If you can't be bothered to stay aware of current events or even read something when provided, I genuinely don't know what you hope to get out of this board. It's like you're unwilling to have a discussion on a discussion board.

He still says “if there really was one in the first place”...

The willfully ignorant will remain so.

It's ridiculous that people would continue to wear their masks while driving alone in their car. That's just more evidence that people don't understand proper mask usage,..

Perhaps that's true in some cases. But yesterday, I had to run to the grocery store. On the way, I had to stop and drop off a package at a UPS drop off point. I got to the UPS location, put on my mask and walked in to drop off the package. I walked back out to the car, and didn't bother to take off my mask while I drove about 1/4 of a mile down the road to the grocery store.

I have seen this a few times. I thought they were either sick and heading to a doctor or just super paranoid. We put our masks on when getting out of the car and they come off as fast as possible while walking back to the car.

That all depends on plenty of factors.

If you are driving windows down in a urban environment low speeds I would say yes or if you drive an older or less expensive car without the good air filtration systems yes wear one if it makes you feel better

If you drive a newer car that when it passes a garbage truck and you can't smell it you have a good one. That probably means you have a HEPA filter not just a cheaper paper one or might even have a charcoal one.

But that doesn't mean the virus could not get in your car while doors are open at the grocery store.

If you don't remember changing or paying someone to you should order a new one.

The whole thing is not if it is needed while driving it is if it makes that person more comfortable out doing needed tasks.

Realistically this is years from being over. I would not discourage anyone doing what they feel to be necessary to survive this.

But driving your Benz you don't need one.

It's ridiculous that people would continue to wear their masks while driving alone in their car. That's just more evidence that people don't understand proper mask usage, though I'm glad to hear that anyone in Florida is taking their responsibility seriously. Everything I have seen coming out of Florida is a cavalier attitude toward mitigation. I know that's not representative of everyone, but the news certainly shows the negative side of it in the state.

Here in Mississippi -- the land of "I'll do what I want when I want to do it" -- it is probably even worse. There is evidence of some effort, but for the most part, what I see is people acting as if the threat is over. Other than work, I only went out in a public setting twice in the last two days. Once was to pick up food from a restaurant that has opened for seated dining. All of the staff wore masks, but none of the patrons did. The place had just opened for the evening, so there probably weren't 15 people seated, but it appears there was little effort made to space diners out throughout the restaurant. The second place I went, under duress :hihi:, was to my granddaughter's virtual high school graduation. My wife and I were taken to a classroom by an unmasked teacher and watched the graduation projected on a dry erase board. The students were allowed two people inside the auditorium and it seemed as if an effort was made to have each group of three spread apart. After the student received his/her diploma, the student and parents would leave the auditorium. The virtual graduation was theoretically done in the manner it was to keep people at safe distances, but those who left the building congregated outside the front doors, so there was a consistent group of about 100-150 unmasked people mashed together for the duration of the program. Though I watched this from about 100 yards away, I wore the only mask I saw the whole time, except for a couple I saw in one of the classrooms.

Yesterday was my first foray out into this new world, aside from going to the hospital.

I’d say that about 5% of patrons wore masks, all of the staff did. We went to three breweries and it was about the same at all, patron wise, and exactly the same staff wise.

One place would not allow mingling amongst folks unless you co-habitated.

:hihi: No, my youngest son went to that school and I now live in that district.

Strange to me, but I had three grandkids graduate from high school and one from college over the last week or so and they all held their virtual graduations a different way. Millsaps held an outdoor ceremony, which I thought was smart, and the event was broadcast on Facebook and YouTube. I got to sit through the speeches before the president and a lady read the names of the graduates. I wasn't bad until they got to my granddaughter's name and mispronounced it. :covri:

Wait a minute! I’ve been to Mississippi, people graduate there????????
    Get out of town!

    Just kidding. 😁 (kind of)

Someone has to go to Tennessee to teach their GED classes. :hihi:

    Touché!
That was a wonderful retort! 😂😂

And hey, “some college” now. 😂

I never had to take a single class, and I was forced to drop out in the 10th grade.
All seriousness I’m unashamed about that. Heavy abuse forced that and I scored higher than all but 5 percent of seniors that ‘graduated’ in all but one subject. 😁

Hah, they probably weren't used to having to say any name other than Jeffcoat.

I have a friend whose kid is going to Millsaps next year on a basketball scholarship. Good choice I think. He gave me an invitation to his graduation and said kinda sadly, I dont know when, where or how it is going to happen. Weird times. Feel sorry for those kids.

Totally agree. My family and I were just talking about that. Weird times indeed.

I told my son that I fear he doesn’t fully understand what’s coming, and to be careful what you ask for in regards to socialism. I pray for my two little and all the younger ones that the world becomes what they hope it will be, in a good way. And they don’t have to be so divided and hate filled as most of us seem to be.

Cool about your friends son. My granddaughter played four years of soccer there and led the team in red cards. She starts graduate school in the fall. Millsaps is planning a normal school year with on campus residents and instruction, but will accommodate those who cannot return with the same virtual learning classes that they used the last month of the school year. I don't know how they do labs and things like that.

I feel for the kids too. College was 12 of the best years of my life.

Aside from my grandfather, the smartest person I know (met thru SR and became best friends, he’s also liberal btw) is Tul. He has 16 years of college and about 6 degrees. Lol.

He chooses to park cars for a living. He enjoys it and cares not about how he’s viewed or perceived. Awesome human being.

Reminiscent to me of my time in the military. The birds and up were very cool and secure in who they were. Same for the E-8 and 9 NCO’s.

It was the low NCO’s and the butter bars and such that were insecure pricks. My brother is a butter bar (the liberal socialist) he may be the exception. Lol. Must be an exception to have a rule tho.

It doesn't have to stay so divided and hate filled. People choose to be that way. If we all took a moment to try to see the other person's perspective, we would be unlikely to change our minds, but would hopefully gain some understanding for why they think the way they do. In a sense, that is what Andrus is trying to do here -- to try to provide a place for civil discussion. If we focused more on understanding and less on "winning the argument," there would be much less vitriol.

    I agree.
And I practice that in my life.

Also, about the future...to me the most important thing we can do to show tolerance and empathy compassion etc...moving forward is to instill those values, in our little ones.

I did. Children are truly the future as generic as that is. They learn what we teach and also what they are surrounded by.
I do not agree with my son on his political and societal views, but the way he was raised by his mother and me was to do and think for himself so I have to respect it.

I guarantee you 99% of lib households do not share that philosophy. I see mostly hard core bigots from the left. More so than the right. And I know full well the right has them too.

Sadly I don’t think the bigots are going anywhere. It takes a conscience effort and a large mind to open your horizons imo. Most aren’t willing to take that leap, and or are incapable of that type of understanding.

I am usually strongly in favor of compromise to move legislation forward. In this case, I am kind of glad that they are slowing this latest stimulus proposal. I would much prefer that the next major stimulus bill would be targeted toward issues everyone can agree on, primarily small business, unemployment and health care. That seems to be a better course than the scattershot efforts that have taken place with little to no oversight.
