Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/17/sup...y-that-refuses-to-work-with-lgbt-couples.html

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

Yet another "I don't hate this group, I just want there to be zero mention or conversation about this group in any context to anyone"

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri school employees would be banned from talking about gender and sexual orientation under a proposal heard by a Senate committee Tuesday morning.

Senate Bill 134, put forward by Sen. Mike Moon of Ash Grove, would ban all discussions in K-12 schools relating to gender identity and sexual orientation, making exceptions only for licensed mental health providers who have permission from a student's parent or guardian. Under the bill, students, teachers, counselors, nurses and other school staff would be barred from discussing a wide range of LGBTQ+ issues both within the classroom setting and in informal situations.

Moon's legislation goes a step further than a Florida law that made national headlines with its prohibition against including gender identity and sexual orientation in curriculum for kindergarten through third grade. The proposed Missouri bill, as currently written, would include all grade levels through high school. It does not outline specific penalties for violating the law.

"These discussions and conversations will not be had," Moon said. "This bill is not intended to promote hate of a certain group. ... I don't purport myself to be a bigot, I am not.".

The bill could potentially bar schools from discussing or teaching books that include LGBTQ+ themes or characters, LGBTQ+ history in Missouri and the United States, or even speaking to students about bullying or harassment if it was related to sexual orientation or gender identity.

"I don't think I've ever felt more disrespected by a single piece of legislation than this one," said Sen. Greg Razer, a Kansas City Democrat and one of Missouri's few openly gay lawmakers. "You are erasing me as a human from our public schools, saying I can't even be discussed."........

TurboTax released an advertisement featuring a same-sex couple, and conservative Christian moms were NOT happy.

The ad talks about activities people can do besides paying taxes. A few activities flash across the screen, and one is a same-sex couple walking down the aisle. One Million Moms, a conservative Christian organization, took issue with this particular advertisement and is now trying to cancel the company.

"TurboTax should be ashamed of attempting to normalize sin by featuring two gay men getting married in their 2023 commercial, ‘Not Taxes.’ Obviously, TurboTax is promoting same-sex marriage to please a small percentage of customers while pushing away conservative customers."

    They continued,

"TurboTax is using public airwaves to subject families to the decay of morals and values while belittling the sanctity of marriage in an attempt to redefine family. Even though homosexuality is unnatural, this advertisement is pushing the LGBTQ agenda. An even greater concern is that the controversial commercial is airing when children are likely watching television. TurboTax crossed a line that never should have been crossed," the rant continues.

"TurboTax is glorifying sin, and no sin should be honored. One day we will answer for our actions or lack of them. We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth. Scripture says multiple times that homosexuality is wrong, and God will not tolerate this sinful nature (Romans 1:26-27)."..............

Can these people ever give it a rest? They're so forking exhausting.

Why do these people believe that Turbo Tax has some obligation to conservative christians moral dictates? They're a company, not a church.

Over the past few years, as J.K. Rowling has wholeheartedly embraced transphobia, the Harry Potter franchise has become a haven for other anti-trans bigots. Now, with the upcoming release of Hogwarts Legacy, transphobes have found a new way to express their hate: Harry Potter-themed transphobic dogwhistles.

Filmmaker and writer Jesse Earl first reported the new dogwhistle earlier this month, when transphobes started commenting on her Youtube videos with the words “Avada Kedavra.”

Avada kedavra, an Aramaic phrase that translates into “I destroy as I speak,” is one of the three Unforgivable Curses in the Harry Potter series. When cast, it instantly kills its target.

Since Earl’s tweet, multiple people have proven her point by publicly responding to her with the curse. Transphobes have also responded by bragging that they’ve bought copies of Hogwarts Legacy, disproving the idea that the game can be separated from Rowling’s transphobia.

Some commenters on Twitter have waved off the harassment, dismissing it as dorky and pathetic—and yes, using a fictional curse from a children’s book as your method of hate speech certainly is both of those things.

But as sad as this kind of hate speech is, it’s vital to understand that, as Earl notes, saying “I kill you” in any language is a death threat. Like all death threats, it needs to be taken seriously and dealt with aggressively.

Why are transphobes resorting to such an infantile way of expressing their hate? It may partly be because the conversation around transphobic bigotry is currently centering around Harry Potter, so they think they’re being extra cute or hurtful by using a Harry Potter reference.

However, the whole point of a dogwhistle is that it slips by those who don’t know what it means, making it easier for bigots to communicate with each other and proliferate hate speech.

In this case, transphobes are able to express an especially vile form of transphobia without using words that would normally trigger deletion or suspension. Factor in all the possible variant spellings of the curse, and you can see how it allows transphobes to launch a free-for-all of hate speech...........

I followed the link that says J.K. Rawling has whole-heartedly embraced transphobia, to find an article titled "If J.K. Rowling's women's shelter turns away trans women, then it isn't helping women", and I just wonder, does anyone think about the female of our species anymore? Is it that now males of the species trump females of the species even in womanhood?

You seem to be a bit confused. It's trans women that Rawlings is restricting services to not cisgender women. How does that possibly translate into males of the species trumping females of the species in womanhood?

Trans women are not so numerous that they will run cis women out of shelters. I get it that it’s her shelter and she can do as she wishes, but she is definitely transphobic, and markedly so. It’s just a statement of fact at this point.

Essentially her point seems to be that if we recognize trans women as women, it will “erase the lived reality” of cis women. This seems to me simply wrong. Recognizing one type of woman doesn’t erase other women. It’s like saying if we recognize black people as human, it will erase the “lived reality” of white people. Makes zero sense.

From her point-of-view, she's saying it's like recognizing people who look like this:
    FIlbXloUYAMEo-n.jpg
    as being black.

But that’s not what she said. She specifically made it zero sum. That recognizing one minority takes away from the majority. That’s a POV that racists have used for a thousand years. It’s exactly the same argument the KKK and Nazis’s use.

She very well may also use the argument you are using, but her argument that I highlighted is much darker than that.

That's not the point at all. I am surprised you missed it; then again maybe I made the mistake of thinking a woman's state of mind in a shelter from sexual violence would be obvious.

Do you really think J.K. Rawling has a uncontrollable fear of trans women?

It’s like saying if we recognize black people as human, it will erase the “lived reality” of white people.
    Bad analogy.

Do you really think J.K. Rawling has a uncontrollable fear of trans women?

I would say yes. She apparently believes that trans women will attack biological woman or take away from biological women or make biological women disappear or cause adverse consequences for biological women or whatever. All of those beliefs are mostly driven by uncontrollable fear or bigoted beliefs.

I don't know if this is JK's reasoning, but i could certainly accept an argument that at a shelter for women who were abused by men, some of them might be uncomfortable if trans women were present at the same shelter.

While it’s true that Rape Crisis has been oversubscribed for several years, the organization has also suffered from transphobic attacks following its long-standing trans-inclusive policies.

“Because of our work to make Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre more trans-inclusive, the transphobia directed at our center has been very loud lately,” Rape Crisis wrote in a letter to its trans service users during Trans Awareness Week. “The threats are mainly online, the impact has been felt by both our staff and our clients. Sadly, we’re hearing from some of you that you’re afraid to come to the center in person.”

Such attacks are often led by so-called ‘gender-critical’ feminists, who have adopted Rowling as their figurehead. They see being assigned female at birth (AFAB) as a shared experience that is intrinsic to womanhood and will often not accept non-binary or trans identities. This has led to many calling for women-only spaces to be accessible only to AFAB people, as in the case of this crisis center.

“Rape crisis services across Scotland are experiencing huge demand for their services. This demand, combined with a lack of sustainable funding, is leading to some centres facing very difficult waiting lists,” Sandy Brindley, the chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland told the Guardian. “In this demanding context, we of course welcome any new service which has in place rigorous safeguarding procedures and is staffed by highly trained professionals to support survivors of sexual violence.”

However, Brindley went on to reiterate that such spaces should cater to all women and non-binary people, not just cisgender women, highlighting that there is no evidence that such services have been used by people of marginalized genders.

“It is crucial that the life-saving support offered by rape crisis centres is available to trans and non-binary people,” she added. “All rape crisis services in Scotland offer support to trans women and have done so for 15 years. There has not been a single incident of anyone abusing this.”

This is only the latest action from Rowling in her fight to make the lives of trans people worse, after regularly taking to Twitter with her transphobic views. While so far her views have been contained to horrifically-timed threads during Pride, this is the first time that her TERF-ness has encroached into real-world spaces. Putting such restrictive access to vital support services like these is a disgusting example of what happens when views get radicalized enough.
    ===================

This is why trans woman need those services as well, unless we as a society don't care at all about them (which is they position that JK is coming from).

Transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. In addition, households with a transgender person had higher rates of property victimization than cisgender households.

I would be ok with them having separate (but equal.. :( ) crisis centers for trans women and cis women.

We definitely need to not just lump cis and trans women into the same group (at least not always) for many reasons.

Trans women and cis women are definitely going to have different types of health issues, for example, so there are very good reasons to consider them different "genders".

Sports is another obvious one to me.

That's not the point at all. I am surprised you missed it; then again maybe I made the mistake of thinking a woman's state of mind in a shelter from sexual violence would be obvious.

    Bad analogy.
Tell me her point then. Also why is my analogy bad? It makes perfect sense to me.

My “womanhood” is not/can not be threatened by the presence of a trans woman. How could it be? That’s like saying the presence of a Jew will threaten someone’s Christian beliefs. Like the presence of black people will threaten my whiteness. 🤷‍♀️

In order to see trans people as “threatening” by their very existence in a space, you have to believe that trans people are threatening because they are trans.

People are threatening because of their actions, never because of their identity.

No I am not. You, as usual, are being condescending, playing with straws, and not understanding.
Oh, I think I understand. You just don't seem to be able to recognize the needs of a certain minority. It's like your comment that drag queens aren't marginalized.
