What has China been up to lately? Not much, just the usual crimes against humanity and a new possible pandemic! Fun country.

https://apnews.com/269b3de1af34e17c1941a514f78d764c

"The Chinese government is taking draconian measures to slash birth rates among Uighurs and other minorities as part of a sweeping campaign to curb its Muslim population, even as it encourages some of the country’s Han majority to have more children.

While individual women have spoken out before about forced birth control, the practice is far more widespread and systematic than previously known, according to an AP investigation based on government statistics, state documents and interviews with 30 ex-detainees, family members and a former detention camp instructor. The campaign over the past four years in the far west region of Xinjiang is leading to what some experts are calling a form of “demographic genocide.”

The state regularly subjects minority women to pregnancy checks, and forces intrauterine devices, sterilization and even abortion on hundreds of thousands, the interviews and data show. Even while the use of IUDs and sterilization has fallen nationwide, it is rising sharply in Xinjiang.

The population control measures are backed by mass detention both as a threat and as a punishment for failure to comply. Having too many children is a major reason people are sent to detention camps, the AP found, with the parents of three or more ripped away from their families unless they can pay huge fines. Police raid homes, terrifying parents as they search for hidden children."

About what I figured. A post on China committing genocide on a minority culture and this quickly switches to "what about Trump!?" on the 3rd post.

You guys can't see it at all, can you? LOL
Maybe because we live in the United States of America, not China? And Donald Trump is not President of China, he's the President of the United States, and ergo his policies and twitter statements have more impact on Americans, not the Chinese.

I'm more worried about a petulant, narcissistic, wannabe authoritarian in the White House than all the tea in China.

And there is a Trumper thread to use all the adjectives you can muster when describing our great orange leader and messiah.
I find it humorous we cannot even discuss soft genocide in our main global enemy without it being thrown to {insert adjectives for orange man} Trump bad too.

What do you think we, specifically our State Department, should do?

You basically dropped naked text and added nothing to the thread. You aren't making any attempt at an actual discussion, why don't you ignore the static and say what you want to say?

Awesome! Have at it. And it's news to me that China is our "global enemy."

Sorry, is that not allowed? I teased the article as we have been told.

but you posted it in this forum, not the World Politics one. So discussion of the US - and its President - seems a reasonable implication, no?

I'm not following the objection - honestly.

I'm not the post police, I'm not really commenting on what is and isn't allowed, that's what the mods are for.

What I'm saying is you really didn't indicate what you're looking to discuss here. I don't think "China is a threat and genocide is bad" is going to get pages of disagreement ya know. If you want to move the discussion in a direction, do it.

It's Chy-ner, not China. According to some at least.

And I'm not really understanding the purpose of the thread. (EDIT: What JRad said. Who's going to disagree with genocide being bad?)

I didn't want it to get lost in all the traffic on the world politics board, so I posted it here. Sorry.

that's fine. I can understand that. But it just doesn't seem reasonable to post it here and then object when Trump or US politics is brought up. It's baked into the proverbial bread here.

And maybe if you offered where you think the US plays a role here?

Personally, I would love to see the US take a stronger role, publicly, in condemning these actions.

And I think that goes for Canada, too. E.g.

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent...ction-to-help-uighurs-says-activist-1.5372127

And I think this is a great resource that gets behind the scenes of the genocide in a way that most Western outlets are not able and have not been able to do.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/13/podcasts/uighurs-coverage-daily-podcast.html

I'm willing to do my part to make the thread worthwhile, but the OP didn't strike me as an invitation to an actual discussion because it really just had a single line and when I first saw it, I wasn't sure what it was intended to be or where it was supposed to go.

"China’s foreign minister derided the story as “fabricated” and “fake news,” saying the government treats all ethnicities equally and protects the legal rights of minorities."

Quote from the article. Is the tail wagging the dog, here? At the end of the day, all authoritarians sound alike when discussing "the media." I believe the Germans called it "Lugenpresse"

I agree on just about everything, minus the OP didn't want a worthwhile thread. That kind of hurt. ;)

I would love to see all the countries, UN, WHO, WTO (NBA is optional at this point) condemn China for their lack of human rights as quickly as these same organization do against other countries and this includes the US. We have some countries signing long term infrastructure contracts while overlooking the countries horrible track record of human rights. Yes, this includes our glorious leader Trump.

Australia has recently committed to a massive military build up stemming from China's reaction to the Covid* virus and China's territory disputes in the Pacific.

The Chinese foreign minister also said the virus didn't come from China and it actually came from US soldiers, so I am not sure he/she has a sterling track record of truth.

It would be great if we could get conservatives to care about civil rights of people in the United States, but I guess caring about civil rights somewhere in the world is a step in the right direction, right?

So, since I was one who brought it up, do you not see that with someone so clueless running our Executive Branch, we have zero chance of doing anything about China? What do you think we can do? I am serious about it, it’s totally relevant. Our government is as effective as Trump is right now.

Why do you think China has finally gotten the courage to move on Hong Kong? They are absolutely a threat to us, and we are led by someone they most likely laugh at. Someone who praises Xi and thinks they are friends.

It is all so messed up. Sure, we should object to what China is doing. But we have someone in charge who won’t even lift a finger to read his daily intelligence briefings. 🤷‍♀️

So, what can the US realistically do right now?
