Many of Trump's endorsed candidates did not do well on Nov. 8th.
    *
Gov. Ron DeSantis DID do well.
    He won convincingly.
Yet in this OP's opinion, Donald Trump is an egomaniac who is seemingly incapable of putting "Party over Self"
Trump has ZERO chance of being elected our next president.
In my opinion, if Trump would just shut up and go away (fat chance of that)...but "if" Trump did that, Gov. Ron DeSantis would have a CHANCE to be a formidable candidate for President in 2024.
Here is an interesting article on this topic...

What do any of you think re. Trump vs DeSantis?

Mike Pence, the former vice-president under Donald Trump, has suspended his campaign to become the Republican nominee for president in the 2024 election.

Pence announced at an event held by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Saturday that he was dropping out of the race, in which he has been lagging, along with others, far behind frontrunner Trump.

“I came here to say it’s become clear to me this is not my time, so after much prayer and deliberation I have decided to suspend my campaign for president, effective today,” Pencesaid.

Pence, 64 and the former governor of his home state of Indiana, after representing it as one of its congressman, had been leading a struggling campaign for a while. He had not yet qualified for the third GOP debate on 8 November, falling short on required donations.

But his announcement on Saturday during an event attended by other prominent candidates for the party’s nomination next year, including Trump and Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, came as a surprise to most.

Appearing on the stage at the event in Nevada, Pence, a Christian hard-right conservative, said: “The Bible tells us there is a time for every purpose under heaven” and he went on to add: “This is not my time.”……..

You had to post in both threads? :biglol:

Donald Trump urged his former vice president Mike Pence to endorse him on Saturday shortly after Mr Pence dropped out of the 2024 Republican primary.

The former president was speaking at an event hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas, where Mr Pence himself had appeared earlier in the day and made the announcement of his withdrawal from the race……

I’ve been hearing Youngkins name mentioned as a late contender locally

When he won the governor’s race it was said to be a blueprint for moving forward in battleground states that would play well on the national level
    =============

It looked, sounded and felt like the start of a US presidential campaign. “The stakes are high and the consequences couldn’t be greater,” said Glenn Youngkin in a glossy video that showed the Virginia governor walking in Ronald Reagan’s footsteps at the 40th president’s library in Simi Valley, California, complete with Air Force One and a fragment of the Berlin wall.

The ad, “It’s Time to Usher in a New Era of American Values,” was released by Youngkin in May, fuelling speculation of a White House run that never came. With Republican candidates struggling to stop the Donald Trump juggernaut, rumours that he could yet be drafted as the party establishment’s alternative have not gone away. The make-or-break moment for Youngkin could come on 7 November when Virginia goes to the polls.

Every seat in the state’s general assembly is on the ballot. Both parties see a path to a legislative majority in a state that has been trending Democratic. Should Republicans – with Youngkin’s help on the campaign trail - manage to hold the house of delegates and flip the senate, donors may be unable to resist the conclusion that he has cracked the code for winning over suburban voters in swing states.

“If he wins both houses, then it will take about 10 minutes for the national media to say we’ve got a new challenger: ‘Glenn Youngkin, the giant killer, and Donald Trump’s never faced this before’,” said Larry Sabato, the director of the center for politics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. “But if he doesn’t, if he loses even the state senate, the air will go out of this trial balloon very quickly.”

Youngkin, who stands 6ft 5ins tall, cultivates the persona of a sunny suburban dad in his signature zippered red vest. He is not weighed down by the baggage of Trump’s 91 criminal charges. At 56 years old, he would represent generational change on a debate stage with 80-year-old Joe Biden. Sabato acknowledged this, saying: “He’s a nightmare for the Biden people. He projects this image that even people in the press who know better can’t help but swallow.”……

A lot of good stuff in this post.
Glenn Youngkin would be an attractive candidate to many people.
...........and yet I think it would be in his best interest NOT to run in 2024.
Can he get his name on the ballot in 50 states?.....and....
He does not need to run. He can run "next time".

The interesting factor in regard to Youngkin is Virginia's one term at a time rule for governors. He'll be out of office in January 2026, almost three years before the next presidential election.

On the one hand, that would allow plenty of time to start laying the groundwork for a 2028 run, and without having to compromise the fulfillment of his duties to Virginia. On the other, would that create too much time out of the spotlight and just give someone else the opportunity to become the new flavor of the week?

He would be challenging Trump in the GOP primaries - he wouldn’t be running as an independent. So getting his name on ballots wouldn’t be an issue. You should want anyone who has a shot at defeating Trump in the primary to run. If Trump wins he will do immense damage to the country. We can’t afford to let him anywhere near the WH ever again. He would give Ukraine to Russia on his first day, and pull us out of NATO. He would sell national secrets to the Saudis (he just may have already done this). He says he will use the DOJ to prosecute his enemies (he already tried this, but the DOJ wouldn’t go along with it - that won’t be a problem in a second term). And a whole lot more chaos.

If Youngkin looks like he can defeat Trump I may request an R ballot and vote for him myself in the primary.

Even someone as popular with Rs such as Youngkin would need a ground game across the nation. It seems so late in the game to jump in.

As far as I know, Trump hasn't mentioned Haley much, if at all (he's had other things on his mind and has been reserving his rage for Jack Smith and Fani Willis)

If he notices that she's becoming a legitimate threat I imagine that will change and he'll go on attack going full on misogynist with some mild xenophobia (or vice versa) and unleash the might of his MAGA horde

@DaveXA may be able to recall more clearly than I do but I remember Youngkin's appeal being mostly his "Mr. Rogers playing Trump" schtick. I'm half surprised his ads didn't show him arriving home and changing his shoes and putting on his sweater

And I will always believe that he won the election mostly by seizing on Terry McAuliffe's parents and school comment and riding it for all it was worth and then some. If McAuliffe hadn't said that I think he wins

I am no fan of Youngkin. He’s not as pathological as Trump, though. I don’t like his policies and I don’t think he is being honest in his abortion stance, but I don’t think Haley is either. Both of them would sign a total ban on abortion if presented the chance. They do that knowing that women with means will always be able to get a safe medical procedure. Mainly poor and middle class women will suffer.

I'm not a fan of Youngkin, but there are a lot of reasons he became governor. Part of it is overall, Virginia citizens pay a ton in state taxes with not so much to show for it. Annual property taxes, including personal vehicles, housing etc. State income taxes, toll roads being added in a lot of areas. People are being squeezed.

I honestly can't wait to move when I retire and move to a state with lower taxes, or a state where those dollars actually make a difference. State taxes are fine, but too much and it becomes counterproductive. And Virginia is well past that.

Also, their state alcohol laws are idiotic. Liquor can only be sold in state affiliated ABC Liquor stores and you can't have liquor shipped direct to you. It has to go through ABC. At least they're starting to loosen up restrictions on marijuana use.

Youngkin isn't completely terrible, but he's definitely not what the state needs. The Democrats in Virginia need to quit with the taxes nonsense though.
