NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

My daughter sent me this. About sums this mess up. :smilielol:

Well, the public will have to just vote based on performance. Trump was a disaster, and is a lunatic. Biden is old, has a cold, and isn’t quick on his feet in this format. Has nothing to do with his performance as president.

I do bemoan the fact that Trump is just spewing hatefulness and outright lies, and CNN isn’t fact checking him. Almost nothing he has said is true. Not one thing.

In my opinion, the over reactions and exaggerations on this board are the same problem that the majority of voters have which is why we are in this mess.

Decades of voting decision making and voting is why we are where we are.

The worst part of this debate is CNN. They set up this format that allows Trump to lie without any push back. They made the rules. They decided the questions that would be asked.

They have put ratings above the public good. After the debate is over, they will rail about how much Trump lied, but they ain't saying squat while it's happening.

The biggest failing of this debate is the failing of news journalism.

Who's overreacting? I'm not seeing it. We're commenting on what we're seeing, and Biden is a terrible candidate based on what we're watching, Trump is as well.

Decades of the DNC and RNC running things is as much of an issue as how people are voting.

Like @bdb13 said earlier, this debate wasn't for folks who had mind made up.

This was all about undecided. And if you are honestly undecided at this point, after 4 years of Trump and 4 years of Biden and cannot tell the difference, then you're looking for anything that aligns you with one. I don't think any independents come away 100 comfy w Biden. They may rationalize that the energy level is just not there.

I don't know. But this was no help to Biden imo. Trump lies at every breath. That's the only hope I have that folks will be swayed by his incessant lying to anyone and everyone if it results in a win for him.

Definitely agree here, although I suspect CNN didn't have a choice but to agree to the parameters Trump set for the debate. I doubt this is what CNN wanted to do. They've had different formats before.

No surprise the moderators won’t cut off Trump when he just dodged questions on Jan 20, opioids, elections, and climate. Their fear of being called biased only contributes to normalizing Trump.

I could have sworn you said you were done with this topic and this board, yet here you are again telling another lie.

Biden has not looked "frozen". He's stammered, he's gotten tongue tied, he's lost his train of thought once or twice, and he's looked down while listening and taking notes, but he has not "frozen" a single time.

You're shilling for Trump whether you admit it or not.
Biden is impossible to watch. He....is....too...old!

My opinions here are really mostly based upon how I think things will be received by voters.. I could be wrong but I just think the side by side contrast here between Biden and Trump plays to Trump's advantage with people who haven't already decided who they're voting for.

Will it amount to making a difference in the end? I don't know but I don't think there's much to take out of tonight as a positive for Biden. He didn't fall flat on his face so there's that I guess but.. you need more than that, especially when up there with Trump.

You bemoan people voting on image while at the same time saying Biden is a terrible candidate based on image.

The people who run the DNC and the RNC only do what the voters let them do.

This is probably the biggest reason our society is on the verge of collapse, everyone blames everyone else. Voters blame the politicians they vote for.

Biden was free to fact check Trump. He’s just not capable.
