There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

Party over country essentially. I don't like to say both sides because they don't do it equally, but both sides are part of that party/country mentality.
I get how you're trying to soften the idea with the "they don't do it equally, but..." but it's not even close.

This IMO is akin to telling an abused party in a relationship to "think about the kids" if they finally have had enough and stand up to their abuser and fight back. The Republicans have been abusing the hell out of the country for their party, and here for once the Dems don't kowtow and bail them out and yet they're getting shirt for it? Nah. They should take not one hit for this vote, even if one is trying to be even-handed one would have to see the incredible discrepancy between the two. Democrats have been the "reasonable one" in the relationship for far too long and done the right thing to cover for the Republicans' "crazy." It's about time to let them reap what they have sown.

I caught a little of McCarthy's press conference afterwards yesterday. If anyone wonders if he could be trusted, watch a little of it. Defiant and projecting blame. Lies about the Biden impeachment. Nothing was his fault. Dems were at fault. Biden is the reason Putin invaded Ukraine. I had to stop after that.

I love how he ended with "does anyone have any positive questions to ask?"

Watching them trying to blame this whole mess on Democrats is wholly unsurprising yet kind of amazing in a way

Is Fox also blaming the Dems for this?

These are small offices in the actual Capitol building that leadership from both parties enjoy. And former Speakers. GOP has decided to go “scorched earth” on Dems because of a situation that is entirely of their own doing. I’m beginning to think there are exactly zero moderate Rs left.

I've been in those offices. They're not small. But I guess that's relative. Some have huge offices, and others have smaller offices by comparison. Location matters tho.

And arguing over office space is a tradition in the Capitol. These guys get moved around sometimes. The majority has a lot of leeway in picking offices. To the winner goes the spoils is pretty apt here. Petty games with office space has been around for well over a century.

And in this case, and for these reasons, the Rs are ridiculously petty. But they're doing it because they can.

TBH there are Democrats who would love nothing more than a Republican-caused shutdown, too. They don't want one themselves, but if the Republicans cause one then that's a political winner for the Dems.
I agree, but it's all going to be in the messaging. Over the years, the Rs keep finding ways to stick the Democrats with the stuff they did. I don't see how they'll do it here, but they'll manage to do it somehow.

Maybe, but again, who's gonna win that messaging war?

It's because the "liberal media" is exactly the opposite.

Ever stood on the bank of a large, swift river? The "liberal" current is an eddy at your feet, appearing to move right-to-left, while the main channel a dozen yards out is moving left-to-right. That main channel is the overall corporate and ratings-based nature of what passes for journalism in America. That main channel is decidedly Republican because corporate owners are decidedly Republican.

Good to know, Dave. I was going by the fact they call them hideaway offices, and they are in addition to their offices in one of the office buildings. From what I gathered not everyone gets an office actually in the Capitol building. Is that correct?

Where's my shocked (not shocked) face?

Yes! No matter how often stupid people say that media favors the democrats, it just isn’t true.

Did anyone see this? Has the media been analyzing it, rehashing it, interviewing Democrat pols about it?

No. What we get instead is Trump and Republicans 24/7.

McCarthy lies through his teeth, the entire GOP lies through their teeth about the Speakership and there's no pushback whatsoever. They say their crazy thing and the show moves on.
