There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

I will say this though, the Democrats saying it's your mess, then actually voting makes them complicit. They could just vote present and let the Republicans do their thing. Actually voting to oust McCarthy is a vote against contrary to the preservation of the institution. They're in effect endorsing the chaos Gaetz is being accused of. Sorry, but I don't buy that it's solely a Republican problem even though the Republicans are the source of the problem.

They voted against him being Speaker originally, what reason has McCarthy given Democrats to support him now? I assume they're voting for him to be removed as Speaker because they really believe he shouldn't be Speaker. Which he shouldn't be.

You'll see a civil war before you see a power sharing agreement in the House imo. The Republicans will never agree to it.
Wait, so why blame the dems when the republicans offer nothing in return for your obedience ? That’s unfair, right?

Sure, until you get someone worse.

I'm not blaming them for how we got here. I'm blaming them for voting McCarthy out. I get why, but ultimately, it could lead to worse. Imagine someone unwilling to make a deal at all. The 45 days will come and go and we'll see a protracted shutdown because of this.

That would probably play well for Democrats politically though and we all know that's really what everything is about.

That wouldn't be on the Democrats either. That's all the Republicans mess to own if the elect a MAGA extremist.

Also, what if we do get a Speaker with some power sharing compromise out of this mess that ends up locking the MAGA extremist out of power, the House would be much better for it. I'm not saying that's likely, but if Republicans can't get their clown caucus in order, it's a possibility.

Think of it this way. McCarthy has done nothing for them. On the contrary, he blames them for everything. Lies about them. Broke his agreement with them. Further he does everything they don’t want to happen. Further, if he somehow keeps his speaker position, he will and can do much worse. What incentive is it for the dems.

Someone comes to my house and beats me to a pulp. Forgive him or someone else will come beat me to a pulp. But if I don’t drop the charges, he s embolden to beat me more because now I gave him my blessings.

So now that it looks like McCarthy is getting voted out, what next? Do they start voting for a replacement?

They can. But also there is a process for a temporary acting Speaker set by the House parliamentarian from a list provided by the Speaker (McCarthy) when he became Speaker (in the event of his incapacitation).

Sure, but that's ultimately partisan nonsense. Not what's good for the country. Party over country essentially. I don't like to say both sides because they don't do it equally, but both sides are part of that party/country mentality.

I forget who it was, but that replacement would be a terrible choice. Isn't he a Trumper?

It should be noted, however, this person does not fall into line of presidential succession.

We don’t know who it is yet. 5 names only the clerk and McCarthy knows I believe. We’ll know soon.

    Edit…mchenry.

Just about every member of Congress approaches this stuff in order of myself, my party, my country.

I don't like it either but to some large extent it's the nature of the beast and ultimately McCarthy did little to nothing to make Democrats more inclined to help him out.

It's really not equivalent tho. Because I'm asking or rather addressing the idea that McCarthy getting voted out will make compromise less, not more likely. Some might not see it that way, but I think that's what will happen.

They don't have to vote for him. Just abstain if it's really the R's problem. Now they're on record voting him out if that happens.
But if they just vote present - that is essentially a vote to keep him in. They’re in a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation.
