There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

But if they just vote present - that is essentially a vote to keep him in. They’re in a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation.
Eh, voting present is essentially saying I ain't getting involved. This is getting involved. But I agree they're in a no-win situation here. And it's solely because of the Republican caucus.

That said, there's a reason a Speaker has never been voted out. I think we're about to learn the hard way why that is.

It's really not equivalent tho. Because I'm asking or rather addressing the idea that McCarthy getting voted out will make compromise less, not more likely. Some might not see it that way, but I think that's what will happen.
Isn’t that an assumption not based on past events? His speaker is on the line, yet he spits on the dems. Refused to negotiate, or sent an olive branch. He walked back on an agreement not to shutdown. What compromise?

Just about every member of Congress approaches this stuff in order of myself, my party, my country.

I don't like it either but to some large extent it's the nature of the beast and ultimately McCarthy did little to nothing to make Democrats more inclined to help him out.
Fair enough. And yeah, I agree McCarthy deserves a lot of the criticism he gets. He screwed the pooch and he's paying for it now.

Well, how did we get a 45 day CR then? You do realize he was a part of that? I mean, the government would be shut right now.

I think the argument is that he reneged on agreements made with Democrats earlier and that he only worked with them in the end out of desperation due to the position he put himself in.

I agree that I do actually give McCarthy credit for doing the right thing in the end there.. but I just don't know that I see much blame to place on Democrats for this situation.

    Agreed.
