It’s so repulsive to see people cheering for what is basically 80% the same thing as the Holocaust - different end result but otherwise very similar.

Economists have said it would tank the economy and cause inflation - notwithstanding the cost.

Is it going to actually happen or is this Build The Wall 2.0?

I would also point out CA, IL, and NY are all tax generators.

Would any conservative on the board like to figure out how these paragons of net revenue can do so while being saddled with a horde of illegal immigrants?
Their hatred made the GOP stupid, it supersedes rational thought.

So now, states rights mean nothing to the Republican Party. This should be concerning to a certain block of their voters that believe the Civil War was a war that was fought because of state rights.
Congress has “Plenary Power” over immigration. States Rights do not apply.

New York debt is $180 Billion
    Illinois debt is $70 Billion
    California debt is $270 Billion

New York paid in 89 billion more then it received in federal funds.
California paid in 78 billion more then it received in federal funds.
Illinois paid in 28 billion more then it received in federal funds.

All of these states could pay off their entire state debt load in 4 years or less if they only paid for the federal services they received.

FYI: The only red state in the top 5 of +net federal outlays is Texas. Texas also has a signficant illegal immigrant population.

    Cal #1 GDP
    NY # 3 GDP
    Illinois #5 GDP

But, it was substantially worse under Biden. It was as if they had no desire to stem the tide.
Okay. I will take a stab at this. The influx that right wingers blame on Biden was the result of the end of pandemic border procedures. It was similar to the worldwide inflation that happened as everyone came out of pandemic protocols. Biden knew it was an issue - he just wouldn’t break the law or ignore due process like Trump did and has done.

Biden wasn’t perfect, but he is a rational human being. Harris was tasked with working with Central American countries to ease the conditions that led to mass migration. These things don’t happen overnight but by the end of her term, migrations from several Central American countries were down very significantly. The press didn’t report on it much, but I remember reading about it. Of course the conservative press didn’t report it at all, but they sure repeated GOP lies about the border religiously.

The mainstream media has a conservative bent. Even WaPo and NYT have something of a conservative bent when it comes to certain topics. And conservative media just flat out lies.

I would also like to point out that the “sanctuary city” bugaboo is another fake issue that the GOP is lying about. It’s maddening to see people swallow this crap whole and regurgitate it on cue while our Constitution is being trampled and our rights are being violated by Trump with the totally complicit GOP cheering him on.

It’s almost like a big immigrant population is a net positive for a state, isn’t it? 🤭🤔

    By executive order.

If folks here will not admit there was a border problem under Joe Biden's leadership, you folks are no different that Tampa and any other MAGA cultists.
There was a border problem under Biden, because he inherited the same problem every previous president has. Biden and members of both parties in Congress put together an immigration reform bill that would have made the border problem much better. Trump bullied Republicans into changing their votes to kill the bill.

That's solely on Trump and is in no way Biden's doing.

You're correct. Immigration falls under the federal government, which is exactly why state and local governments have no obligation to assist the federal government regarding immigration.

However, the Supreme Court has up to now ruled that the federal government can not use the threat of federal funding, that is not directly related to an issue, to coerce states into actions on unrelated issues. Transportation and immigration are not directly related. Sure, there's some overlap, but they are two separate policy and budgeting issues.

The Trump administration trying to force states to do what he wants in regards to immigration, when they have a right not to, is a direct violation of states' rights.

Apples to oranges comparison that is made farther useless by not comparing those states per capita debts to the per capita debts of all states.

Debt is a result of how a state chooses to spend it's money. It's a fact that California sends more money to the federal government in taxes than they get back in funding from the federal government. It's also a fact that most "red" states are just the opposite. Most "red" states are "welfare queens," to use their terminology.

All 3 states for sure don't need liberation from a horde of illegal immigrants.
This is the seminal lie told by all GOP. And bought hook, line and sinker by some of our conservative members (not you Dave, love ya). It’s straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Even Trump doesn’t believe it, although I think Stephen Miller probably does. He’s really sick. (so is Trump but in a different way).

Great discussion on what is happening here.

Yes Trump closed the border and was allowed to do so by the courts due to Covid but once that "emergency" was over, it was no longer legal - and I don't think you would support breaking the law. Another issue with prolonging the closure would be that Mexico refused to take the refugees/immigrants back once that agreement expired - so what did you want Biden to do - given those two facts ?
I'm not referring to closing the border completely. I'm talking about border crossings in general. Under Joe Biden, we were at all time high levels of migrants crossing the southern border. Biden repealed some of Trump's policies from his first term and did things different. This allowed for a "more open border" and folks took advantage of it. It became a real problem heading into the 2024 election.

Something to note: Some may not like the tactics Trump is using to secure the border. Folks are not treated as nicely. It's harder for asylum seekers to actually be granted admission into the US. The list goes on.....but the fact is his policies have dramatically decreased the wave of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border without getting Congress involved.

And since the immorality, the injustice doesn’t move conservative members, the economics should make sense to them. If we carry out the type of mass deportation that Trump has promised, we will wreck the economy.
