I haven't been able to look into this, but stumbled on it. What's the story here? I'm not a fan of open carry in this way. That has never been the intent of open carry, that I'm aware of. And masks? Granted, it is cold, but still..

It seems to me that the media engaged in fear mongering and attempted to create a divisive narrative.
    And?

If we're serious here about trying to curtail the use of language that some members find objectionable and complain to the mods about, then we shouldn't be using the language when referring to other members or in mocking/baiting tones as those invite more discussion around those "sensitive" topics which members have complained about. I know he was joking about it, and it doesn't bother me how he used it (but then again, I didn't complain to the mods about using the term "racist"), but if we do want to clean up the site for such language... I mean, if the liberals don't like being called "snowflakes" then the liberals also shouldn't be mocking media coverage by using the term "snowflake" in return.

His campaign was treading water before he made that statement and promptly proceeded to take a dive right after he made it. So you're proving the exact opposite point that you're trying to prove. Lol.

I am not sure how you reached the conclusion that this somehow disproves Joe's point. The fact remains that a candidate for the Democratic nomination stood on a stage and was thrilled to make that declaration. Moreover, the response from the crowd of Democrats was to cheer him on.

The supposed front runner, Joe Biden, seems to be in agreement with Beto, since he has declared that it's unreasonable to have weapons as lethal as a pistol that is capable of carrying 10 rounds chambered in 9mm.

That's an interesting take. If you think the term "racist" is used to the detriment of society, don't point it out when the media does the same.

I appreciate your willingness to discuss the issue, I just don't agree or I don't quite follow your rationale. Sorry.

My rationale is that the post wasn't directly referring to media reports; it stood on its own. Nothing in the CNN tweet even closely referred to "racists" or anything racial -- there was one picture that had the "Do I look like a White Supremacist to You?" question but even then it's not known that's what his use of "racists" was referring to. I read it as not a media critique but as a critique of posters here. I could easily be wrong, but others can take that same reading and get defensive.

On the Liberal board we have discussed and debated this issue, and I think the general consensus is that to make the MCB better, we liberals have to do our part and be very cautious -- overly cautious, even -- on how terms are used and that term (racist, racism, etc.) specifically. Some don't agree and thus our discussions, but I think in general the idea is to try and be super cautious around words that can immediately cause defensive reactions from other posters in order to make the board better.

    Nobody but Democratic Lawmakers.

Technically he's not a lawmaker, as he doesn't hold a position in government now.

Apparently, it is Lobby Day in Virginia and it has been for several years. Not sure if it is always on MLK day, the 3rd Monday of the the month or whatever.
Appreciate the info. That makes more sense as to why.

That debate was right after the El Paso massacre. Regardless of what you think of Beto, that mass shooting clearly changed him and how he felt about gun control. He emphatically made that statement because he truly believes that we need to take a stronger stance on assault riffles. Part of the crowd that day agreed with him.

I actually agree with him there is no use for assault riffles and that there should be a ban on future sales, I think many do. But I'm just not willing to go as far as gun confiscations (voluntary, sure. mandatory, no). Apparently, the vast majority of Democrats aren't ready to confiscate guns either, which is why he lost support and had to drop out.

So while there are some willing to go that far, the majority aren't. Which contradicts Joe's point. I hope that clears it up for you.

Okay, I appreciate your position more - I personally saw it as a critique of the media's handling of the event. I tend to think that the media and the governor played that angle for political reasons - both in terms of painting a picture to divert attention from the issue of the actual legislation and to limit the crowds.

I do appreciate the efforts you described to make the board better and knowing that puts your earlier post in a different light for me.

I appreciate your post, although I am not sure I agree that there was a causal connection between Beto's statement and his decision to drop out of the race, or if there was, that it was driven by the attitudes of Democrats as opposed to general electability. I'm not saying you are necessarily wrong, just that I can't assume you are correct.

    No, he isn't, actually.

    Case open.

He was brought into this discussion because the old "don't worry, nobody is coming after your guns." Is old and false... some people are and they just happen to be Democrats. The same ones running the Government of Virginia.

HUMMM. Very interesting. I'd almost like to have a discussion about that alone... Just out of curiosities V chip, where outside of Atlanta Are you? And please don't say Loganville..

While isn’t in government he was mentioned as a potential VP by Joe Biden not very long ago.

The left likes to say they aren’t coming for the guns but we all know the end game is ultimately confiscation.

There are people in the extreme left that may hold that goal, but I don’t think it represents a majority of the left. No more than white nationalists represent the entirety of the right.

Supposing this to be true, I don’t think we should be proposing mechanisms by which the extreme can accomplish their ultimate aims.

Just as we draw a bright line against discrimination based upon race, we should draw the same bright line when in comes to the 2A.
