This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I just read your first sentence and stopped.
You are kidding me aren't you?
Do I have have to name the cities that reduced their police force and crime went thru the roof.
    Seriously?
Are you in favor of reduced police numbers?
The difference between your post and my post is that I gave you an example of exactly what I claimed. Can you do the same?

Uh....@Saintamaniac .... I think you have plenty of examples.
I'm curious if anyone on this forum is mature enough to enter a post like: "For a change...it's rare...but in this case I agree with Steve".
    I'll be waiting and watching.

'Defund the police' was dumb as shirt to use as a political slogan and I do think it's probably played some contributing role in the increase in violence we've seen.. but I also don't believe the increase in violence, if you were to look further, is only limited to Democratic run areas or areas that supported or enacted 'defund the police' related policies.

No police department was “defunded” - which basically means to withdraw all funds. I agree it was and is an imprecise and not well thought out slogan. Steve - do you have any neutral sources? Because the bias in the sources you gave is glaring and undeniable. Did you look up crime rates immediately before and after whatever possible budget cuts took place?

I’m going to have to see more than sensational click bait articles to say you are right.

Thanks for your post. I am just promoting my position that defunding the police is not a good idea....and....many cities that defunded the police found that #1 crime went up....#2 decisions makers regretted defunding their police.
    That's all I'm saying.
Btw....There might be Republican mayors that defunded their police department...but I don't know of any....and if they exist, I'm sure they are in the incredibly small minority.

So - in Seattle, which is the first article and the only one I care to spend my time on, I found this:

So, the budget was decreased by about 10% from 2020 to 2021. It appears they accomplished the decrease by outsourcing the parking ticket functions of policing. They didn’t do it correctly, however, and a bunch of tickets had to be refunded by the city because of a technicality with the outside people who were writing tickets. About $5 million dollars worth out of a $360 some million dollar budget. So, this is what is referenced as “Seattle implodes”, by one of the most biased sources around - the Daily Caller. There were jobs created for an additional 237 police officers in the new budget, so the department‘s manpower budget wasn’t cut.

It does seem to be true that tempers flared over the budget cut, and some officers left in a huff. But they fully funded their replacements and an increase in the number of officers overall. The new mayor ran on a platform of increasing the number of police officers. The city council was responsible for the budget cut.

It would be quite the stretch to blame any increase in crime on the budget cut, as they seem to have fully funded the manpower part of the budget.

Nope. I put a search engine into Google and then copied and posted the results. This is not Sean Hannity or Laura I. Just news stories for the most part. I can see with my own eyes that taking funds away from police....reducing there numbers is a bad idea. I don't have to give up my time to search for dry statistics. This is not rocket science. More police...more safety.... Less police...less safety.

Yeah, tell that to the kids in Uvalde and their parents. All those police standing in the hall way sure did a great job of making things more safe.

Until your side adopts accountability as a central component of policing, nothing will change or get better.

@SteveSBrickNJ you have certainly shown examples of cities that attempted to reduce the amount of money that was dedicated to policing and the resulting increase in crime. I can admit that without a problem. I guess it's a coincidence that 4 of the 5 videos you submitted were from Fox News which is dubious at best. However, you did provide examples of cities that saw an increase in crime once funds were reduced; reduced not cutoff which is what defund means.

But back to the point that this originated from, Republicans sowing what they reap with respect to violence, lying, supporting and attempting to coverup an insurrection, the ill-fated defund the police slogan was ginned up by a group of democrats with the same numbers of republicans who are currently in favor of the J6 committee. It's definitely not a majority and the ones who were against such an idea were vocal about it and weren't afraid of saying so in public. In that respect, they weren't the same type of coward that republicans are currently. Defunding the police was a stupid idea from the start, not just politically but also practically.

But again, the defund the police idea is a non-sequitur in the context of republicans sowing the seeds of violence against one's political rival and then having that same idea pointed right back at them. You care to join that discussion?

You should know that Google will show you results based on your past history - in other words Google is in the confirmation bias business. It’s their business model.

The problem with this is that no one was talking about defunding the police. We were discussing the republican party getting back what they put out; violence against political rivals. Defunding the police had nothing to do with that. Yet that was your reply to my post about the republican candidate whose neighbor did not appreciate the candidate putting his trump supporting literature on his property. What did one thing have to do with the other?

I just came back here and saw a #5 over my alerts bell.
I have a feeling I would not like any of them.
One person used a laughing emoji.
Listen, any person who thinks that defunding or less funding for police departments is a good idea...well that person has earned a laughing emoji.
I'm not talking about Democrats vs Republicans.
    Less police...less safety.
    More police...more safety.
I'm just talking about common sense.
    Good night.

That was me. I laughed because I disagreed with your statement and found it to be overly reductive and simplistic. We don't really have another way of showing that.

More police does not equal more safety. It could actually equal more tyranny if police aren't managed efficiently, don't follow the very laws and rules they're sworn to up hold, put their lives above those they're serving and protecting and aren't held accountable for their actions. All if which is severally lacking in many police precincts around the country's because of simplistic Republican approach to policing of more police and bigger budgets equal more safety. It's a tragically bad approach to policing, the fruits of which we are seeing now.

    So there's your explanation!

I wasn't trying to say that there were Republican mayors who supported defund the police. I really doubt there were any.

I'm just saying that I've previously looked it up and I'm almost certain that crime has gone up in most areas regardless of whether or not those areas supported defund the police and regardless of whether or not the area is run by Democrats.

And with that being the case, even though 'defund the police' is as stupid as I thought it was when they first ran with it, there's not really the straight forward correlation that you're drawing between between an area's support for defund the police and the overall increase in violence we've seen... As again, the increase in violence is across the board and regardless of those factors.

What a surprise that Steve didn't respond to this one.
