Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

from my limited understanding of Sec 232, Trump would first have to have Commerce conduct an "investigation" into SPECIFIC items, not ALL. Then submit report, along with SECDEF signing off and THEN can impose Tariffs.

See, Trump did this in his 1st term for Aluminum, steel, autos, auto parts, uranium, titanium, transformers and vanadium.

2017-2021. During the first Trump Administration, Commerce completed seven Sec. 232 investigations: (1) aluminum, (2) steel, (3) automobile and automobile parts, (4) uranium, (5) titanium sponge, (6) transformers and transformer components, and (7) vanadium. In all completed investigations except for vanadium, Commerce found a threat to U.S. national security.

President Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum in 2018. He later modified the steel and aluminum tariffs, granting certain product and country exemptions as well as negotiating import quotas and increasing tariff rates on specific countries and goods. For other goods, the Trump Administration entered into negotiations with trading partners. For uranium, President Trump did not concur with Commerce's finding of a national security threat, but announced the establishment of a working group.

Commerce found all but vanadium to be national security, and he imposed his tariffs on those products. ( except vanadium )

He wanted to skirt the boring report part and go straight to choke hold.

As suspected- Trump wants to SKIRT around the Commerce dept having to do investigation, write report and recommendations

Nutlick just admitted to it in Committee

Meanwhile, negotiations are going really well

Nintendo fans across the US are breathing a sigh of relief as they tear apart the boxes housing their new Nintendo Switch 2 video game consoles.

On-again, off-again trade tariffs implemented by Donald Trump, which precipitated pre-order delays from Nintendo, made the 5 June release date of the highly coveted hardware feel more like a hope than a certainty.

A potential price hike up from $450 loomed over launch day, but would-be buyers’ fears did not come to fruition.

Nintendo’s maneuvering around Trump’s tariffs isn’t over, though – far from it. The Japanese console maker managed to luckily launch its device squarely within a 90-day tariff pause issued by the president.

If tariffs on countries such as India and Japan return to the levels proposed during Trump’s “liberation day” speech at the start of April, however, experts say Nintendo will have to limber up for yet another delicate trade policy dance.

It’s possible that a Switch 2 bought during the holiday season will cost more than it did at launch date. Nintendo’s top gaming hardware competitors – and essentially anyone shipping electronics to the US – have been watching the Switch 2 saga with bated breath.

“What saved Nintendo in this case was that Trump chickened out,” Notre Dame professor and international economist Robert Johnson said……

Trump Admin is taking several steps, as quietly as they can, to affect how economic stats are either gathered or reported. I read about cuts causing issues with gathering inflation data in WSJ. Essentially they are having to cut way back on the actual data and use projections more and more.

    Now this:

This is beyond outrageous.....for decades BLS has been non political and has been the benchmark for labor (economics and statistics).....

Both parties administrations have respected that.....until now.....

This undermines the dollar more then the tariffs. If people think your economic data is not reliable, they won't invest. It's why China will never dominate the world in the way America has. We have no idea about basic facts on China: the size of economy, population, or government investments into private Chinese companies.

It would not shock me to find out BYD has been massively bankrolled by the CCP..

    Now this:

This week, ADP reported 37,000 in private sector hiring in May while BLS reported the US added 139,000 jobs in May. BLS also revised their March and April reports (a downward revision of 30000 for April and 65000 for March).

We all know Trump is going to try to cook the books. He doesn’t give a rat’s arse about the consequences as long as the market looks good and he can fool his cult into thinking everything is fine.

Trump claiming "framework" for trade deal with China done.

Check this out- China, in May, in retaliatory move, reduced rare earth mineral exports to US. That caused panic.

So now Trump is touting his "getting rare earth minerals" BACK to US as his win. Still no "opening up China to US " and still maintaining 55% tariff on Chinese goods imported.

So the whole "win" is around the rare earth issue, which he caused by putting 145% tariff on China in April.

    You cant make this up.

As for the actual "trade issues" well, the can has been kicked down the road ( again ) til Aug 10. So we continue with the original trade "truce" from earlier Geneva meeting between the two

    LOL

And if you want to know just how much BS this all was, check out the market. Flat.

Oh Trump is BIGMAD this am

WSJ wrote article outlining how China bested Trumps crack negotiation team and got the leverage in talks moving forward. The "rare earth" deal is TEMPORARY

    China gave 180 day reprieve.

Details are starting to emerge and of course, Trump will be posting about.
