Not long ago Kari Lake proclaimed Arizona's abortion law was a great law and wanted it the law of the state.

Now that she has gotten her way, she is lobbying for it to be repealed.

As I have been saying since 2022, the overwhelming vast majority of women aren't going to vote for the man who proudly boasts that he got rid of Roe V. Wade. Nor are those women going to vote for a forced birther politician.

Turns out, republican belief in "pro life" was all just lies to get votes. Who is surprised? I sure am not.

How many forced birthers will do the same about face?

Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake is actively lobbying state lawmakers to overturn a 160-year-old law she once supported that bans abortion in almost all cases, a source with knowledge of her efforts told CNN.

Trials are underway in Britain for the first-ever male contraceptive pill. It’s a promising medication, one that puts more power in men’s hands to prevent unwanted pregnancy with high reliability and, so far, few reported side effects.

The trials seek to answer a basic medical question: is this drug safe and effective?

But the manufacturers are no doubt wondering about something else: will men take it?

The overwhelming share of responsibility for preventing pregnancy has always fallen on women. Throughout human history, women have gone to great lengths to prevent pregnancies they didn’t want, and end those they couldn’t prevent.

Safe and reliable contraceptive methods are, in the context of how long women have sought to interrupt conception, still incredibly new.

Measured by the lifespan of anyone reading this article, though, they are well established, and have for many decades been a normal part of life for millions of women around the world…….

Yet when it comes to reproduction – doing it, or preventing it – we have asked virtually nothing of men. For 75 years now, it’s been women’s bodies that have shouldered the burden of preventing pregnancies. It’s women who have set their alarms to take pills, gritted their teeth through the usually-unmedicated and often-brutal pain of IUD insertion, and sometimes dealt with the side effects of contraceptive hormones: mood swings, weight gain, bleeding, headaches, nausea, and more.

To be clear, many women experience no side effects at all, or only mild ones that dissipate quickly. But a lot of women have suffered through some serious discomfort because there simply weren’t other reliable options.

And many of us have wondered when, exactly, science would catch up with rapid gains in gender equality, and ask men to take on a fraction of the responsibility for planning families.

Yes, there are condoms. But that thousands-years-old technology – which, by the way, is not a male contraceptive, but rather a tool both parties use and that impacts both of their physical experience – has its limitations.……

I just got snipped. No condoms, no discomfort for my wife or me. Easy peasy.

There's also timing ovulation that doesn't often get talked about but is actually pretty effective if done correctly.

That reminds me of a joke I once heard:

What do you call someone who uses "the rhythm method"?

Which versions of the bible have you actually read? Which denominations have you attended their ceremonies? Which denominations have you talked to their leaders about their Christian beliefs and interpretations of the bible?
Better yet, let me ask you, which Bible version doesn't say that you must worship your Lord and obey his rules to be granted eternal life, or else be punished and left for death (or sent to hell, either way, no eternal life of bliss for you) ? Because, again, that IS the central point of Christianity, and has been for centuries.

For the record, as I have said before, I've been baptized in 6 different churches, I've done stints with the Mormons and even the Krishnas, not of my own volition, family thing. I also took 3 semesters of religious studies, as it was the requirement at Loyola when I attended.

Dang, after all that, I'd probably be atheist too. :hihi:

I saw this. I also saw someone compare the amount of federal money that flows into Iowa in the form of agricultural subsidies. Needless to say the farmers cut is far, far more than the proposed aid for hungry kids. 😡

……Hoffman recently spoke to the Guardian about how Democratic control of the White House and one of the congressional chambers has offered little resistance to Republican command of the judiciary, which allowed the supreme court’s conservative majority to overturn Roe.

She believes that gaining back the ground lost since Dobbs was handed down in the summer of 2022 requires more than just voting for pro-abortion candidates.

“That’s one aspect, yes,” Hoffman said.

But, given that the federal levers of power are divided among the two political parties, and the procedural blocks that one branch of government can leverage on another, “don’t assume – please don’t assume – that as soon as these people get into office, they’re going to put Roe v Wade right back,” Hoffman said.

    “They can’t.”

Hoffman highlighted how little federal-level Democrats had done to protect abortion access with Joe Biden in the White House and a slim majority in the Senate since Roe v Wade was overturned.

Biden has been unwilling to pursue an expansion of the nine-seat supreme court to add liberals to the bench and better balance its 6-3 conservative majority. Meanwhile, with control of the House and Senate split by thin margins, Congress has not been able to enact national protections for reproductive rights through legislation, creating a confusing checkerboard where abortion is nearly completely banned in 14 states.

Hoffman had a hand in founding Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights shortly before Roe fell, with the aim of galvanizing popular opposition to abortion restrictions.

She said the thousands who participated in mass street protests in cities across the US – including Washington DC, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago – then and since have had the correct approach. And she complimented the energy younger advocates brought in organizing those events and similar, unrelated ones when unrest over Roe’s fall was at its highest.

But Hoffman said such demonstrations have all but vanished in terms of size and intensity as other major events, including the Israel-Gaza war that erupted in October, have taken up the progressive left’s attention.……

In May, I made the decision to take abortion pills to end a pregnancy. I wasn’t scared. I’ve been involved in LGBTQ+ and pro-choice activism in Poland for years, I know my rights and knew I wasn’t breaking the law. Though Poland’s abortion law is strict, terminating your own pregnancy is not illegal. So, like thousands of Polish women every year, I ordered the medication online from Women Help Women, a secure source abroad.

One night, two weeks after I’d taken the pills, I was at home when suddenly there was a loud banging on my front door and shouts of “police!”.

I had just come off the phone with my psychologist. It had been a stressful time and that night I’d had a panic attack. I’ve had these many times before and I called my psychologist for help. She asked me about any new medication I’d been taking so I told her about the abortion pills.

She was calm and told me that she was calling a paramedic. Instead she called the police. Later, the recording of her conversation with the police was leaked to the press, where she can be heard telling them that I’d had an abortion and was suicidal, though I specifically told her I wasn’t.

I have a lot to say about my psychologist, none of it fit for print, but suffice to say I trusted her completely and she violated that trust and our confidentiality.

When I let the police in, they did not treat me like someone whose wellbeing they were concerned for. They stomped all over my flat in their boots, shouting and pushing me around. They said they were investigating “a crime” without specifying what it was.

They confiscated my laptop and told me to leave with them. There was an ambulance waiting. I was in shock and felt I had no choice but to go with them.

They took me to the emergency department at the hospital. While I sat in a corner crying, the doctors there told the police that they could look after me and that they could leave.

This wasn’t what they wanted to hear. They took me to another hospital with a gynaecological department, where more police were waiting for me. All this time they never said a word about what I was supposed to have done wrong.……
