Is this Ted’s first appearance in this thread? If so, he’s overdue:

    Guess this can go here
    ================

It was a brave, if perhaps scientifically obvious, experiment – to convey messages about the unfolding climate crisis via the regular local TV weather forecasts seen by viewers in the conservative heartland of Iowa. It culminated in the meteorologist involved receiving death threats and exiting the state.

Chris Gloninger, who is 38, has been obsessed with the weather since he was a child, when Hurricane Bob crunched into his New York state home town, parlaying this into an itinerant career as a TV meteorologist in cities such as Milwaukee and Boston, where he pioneered at NBC 10 what he thinks was the US’s first regular broadcast segment on climate change, in 2010.

Gloninger said he experienced “a holy shirt moment” with climate change as he was drenched while covering 2017’s Hurricane Harvey – in which the overheated air and ocean helped dump 9tn gallons of rainwater upon Texas in little over a day. He said he always required a thick skin, like many broadcasters, to deal with casual ridicule over his appearance or voice.

But the experience at KCCI, a CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, was more extreme. Hired by the station two years ago to help weave the reality of global heating into his forecasts, Gloninger flagged the science where appropriate, reminding viewers during a flood event that a warming atmosphere holds more moisture, or of the upward march of global temperature during a heatwave.

But this soon provoked angst from some viewers, who grumbled that he should “stick to the weather”. Then, last July, he started getting a string of emails that included threats against his life.

“It was ‘I am going to kill you’ written in a very deliberate way in a long letter and followed by obsessive emails,” said Gloninger. His critic demanded that he “go the hell back to where you came from DOUCHEBAG!!!” and demanded “what’s your home address, we conservative Iowans would like to give you an Iowan welcome you will never forget.”

The emails attacked Gloninger for pushing a “liberal conspiracy theory on the weather”, calling climate change a “Biden hoax”.

What followed was a painful, fraught year in which Gloninger and his wife, Cathy Danko, struggled to deal with what they felt was an overt threat to their safety.

The meteorologist started to suffer from stress-induced acid reflux and a chronic cough. He felt his zest for work was diminishing. He ended up in therapy for a year.

“I would go to work until 11pm at night and my wife was alone, we’d worry when a car drove past at night, your heart races a bit,” he said. “I was a first responder for several years and so I’ve seen things that left me upset but this is something I’d never experienced before. We were frightened, we had no idea what a man in rural Iowa would take a stand over. We were awake at all hours.”…….

I actually learned something - as the comments explained to the idiot above, when the air temp is higher than body temp it’s actually smart to cover exposed skin and insulate your core.

These people are so ignorant and at the same time so sure of themselves.

And his responses to the people calling him out are as if he's proud of his stupidity.

Thats why you never see the people in the middle east wearing shorts and tank tops in the desert. Also, if you ever notice people who do lawn care usually wear clothes covering their whole body. some people believe the dumbest things...

A co worker was telling me that he watched something about Garth Brooks is a serail killer/trafficker. He said someome did the research and pointed out that every where Brooks plays, at least one person has gone missing in that city the same day.
I was like, Usually performers play bigger cities. People go missing everyday. its not unreasonable to think that if i wanted, i can make the same connectiion with any singer...lol

Yeah, people are idiots. The smart ones know you cover up in extreme heat.

Evidently Bridgette got her assignment. She’s supposed to convince black voters that Trump is on their side, lol. My question: who is making these for her? And is she as incredibly stupid as she seems?

Ultimately, I like seeing these kind of absurd claims, because the backfire and the backlash are going to be beautiful and eventually lead to better days for everyone, except bigots.

My life time experience in this life is when someone says they are not suicidal, they are suicidal. 100% of the time that's the way it has gone down. I have no other experience to draw from.

I have heard that four times during my life from someone I once knew. "Knew," as in past tense. All four of those people killed themselves very shorty after saying that they were not suicidal. One of them years ago jumped off of the Golden Gate Bridge where he would land on the hard rocks, not in the water. He didn't want to survive that. Nor did he want his body to wash out to sea. He was a sailor, he feared that, his body being lost at sea a lot.

I had to deal with his mother who I had never met, nor did he even like. He had said to me that she blamed him for ruining her life after she had gotten pregnant with him. I had to try to help her while she was somewhat blaming me, and all of his other friends for him dying, when it had been years since she had actually been involved in his life. That was a horrifying thing.

The most recent time was two years ago. That guy told me he was not suicidal one day when I was talking with him, and the next week he ate his pistol in a remote spot in Yosemite Park. I had to clean up part of his mess too. He was renting a place from us to live. Suddenly I had to deal with his next of kin about all of his stuff. What to do about his stuff. What to do about his place where he had lived.

We cleaned it up and sold it. A nice guy most of the time but now he's past tense. That place where he live is past tense as well. Ending one's life doesn't not come without costs that deeply affect others.

I don't know. In that weird Arizona woman's case I frankly don't care. I really dislike her for what she's said and done, although having never actually met her in my life she didn't actually affect me in any real way. I shouldn't care.

It pisses me off... . I do care. I'm angry.

    It's not my job.

I don't care. I have too many other things to care about, I don't have the time left in life to care what with all the other things I do have to care about. I don't know her.

    I don't like her.

    I do care.
