Thankfully, after turning in my US passport and renouncing citizenship, I don't have to vote for either of the two idiots running for President. However, if I still had the right to vote, I would vote for Republicans or moderate Democrats down ticket. If I weigh my personal beliefs against the two party platforms and weigh the importance of each of those beliefs, the scale would tend to favor the Republican platform.

The current state of both parties and how they are manipulated and/or controlled by the extreme right wing and left wing constituents, screams out for a viable, moderate third party. Unless one of the parties can find and advance a visionary, inspiring leader that can speak to moderates on both sides of the divide, increased partisanship and the continued devolution of American politics is ensured.

Even though on a much smaller scale, the New Zealand political system makes it much easier to find a party that matches your beliefs. We have the two moderate parties (Labour and National, left wing and right wing, respectively), two more extreme parties (Greens and NZ First), plus a libertarian-based party (ACT) and the indigenous peoples party (Te Pati Maori). This creates a system where parties have to form coalitions to govern and it mitigates any extreme views or policies.

The state of both parties is bothsidesism. There is little to no impact by the so-called extreme left in the Democratic Party. There has been no legislation put forth to nationalize any industry. Has there been calls for letting people live how they want, love who they want? You bet.

The extremism has come completely from the MAGA, period. Throw in Project 2025 and the loyalty demands for Trump personally and then please explain how that is not an order of magnitude more extreme.

Dismissive does describe my attitude toward Vivek Ramaswamy. It is intriguing because MAGA complains about “elites” but sure loves themselves some elites when those elites say or do something MAGA likes.

Vivek is clueless regarding “the people” which is unsurprising since there is no such thing as “the people”. There are various groups which are etched together based on a variety of characteristics which include, especially since the rise of Trump, xenophobia. Basically, MAGA is fear based.

Fair enough - I think we all need to try to engage on substance rather than dismissive or flip comments, particularly with newer posters here trying to get a feel for the vibe here. This is supposed to be a forum for meaningful discussion, even where we think the idea being discussed is junk or should be dismissed. I think that we sometimes get into the mindset that because we dislike or reject an idea, that gives us license to be dismissive or even combative with a person here that mentions it, but that's just not how it should be done. Yes, sometimes that posture is earned through exchanges but we can't just jump to it. I think we all need to be better about that

I share your opinion about Vivek, largely because I think most of his big ideas to bring change to American government are nonsense - and that he doesn't know what he's talking about. He freely throws around plans that would require constitutional amendment and when asked about that, he seems confused. He freely insists that cutting the federal government by 70 percent and wholesale elimination of agencies, some of which have exclusive jurisdiction over important areas, is not only the best idea, but that the president can do it. I substantially question his understanding of how American government works.
