Anxiety surges as Donald Trump may be indicted soon: Why 2024 is 'the final battle' and 'the big one'

WASHINGTON – It looks like American politics is entering a new age of anxiety, triggered by an unprecedented legal development: The potential indictment of a former president and current presidential candidate.

Donald Trump's many legal problems – and calls for protests by his followers – have generated new fears of political violence and anxiety about the unknowable impact all this will have on the already-tense 2024 presidential election

I’ll reframe this is a more accurate way, Are Presidents above the law? This new age was spurred into existence when home grown dummies elected a corrupt, mentally ill, anti-democratic, would be dictator as President and don’t bother to hold him responsible for his crimes, don’t want to because in the ensuing mayhem and destruction, they think they will be better off. The man is actually advocating violence (not the first time). And btw, screw democracy too. If this feeling spreads, we are In deep shirt.

This goes beyond one treasonous Peice of work and out to all his minions. This is on you or should we be sympathetic to the idea of they can’t help being selfish suckers to the Nation’s detriment? Donald Trump is the single largest individual threat to our democracy and it‘s all going to boil down to will the majority of the GOP return to his embrace and start slinging his excrement to support him?

You are so concerned with protest that never happened, but you ignore and make excuses for the past insurrection and riot by Trump and the MAGA Administration that did happen.
I'm concerned about outside groups trying to preemptively get the military to not obey their commander in chief.

You weren't concerned about the BLM/antifa insurrection.

Yeah. Can't try to stop an authoritarian Commander and Chief from seizing our countries military to carry out his coup to remain in office illegally 4 more years after losing an election. God forbid.

You weren't concerned about the BLM/antifa insurrection.

I don't know what you're talking about. There was only one insurrection in the past 8 years, and it wasn't BLM/antifa.

Please explain what your issue is with a private group coming up with a plan to take legal action if the president gives the military an unlawful order.
--Remember that following an unlawful order is a violation of the UCMJ (therefore illegal)
--The plan would only go into effect if the president were to give the military an unlawful order.
--The plan would involve notifying congress and filing legal action to stop the action if the military members were to follow that order.

Quit telling other people what they are concerned about. You don’t have a clue what you are going on about when you project things onto other people on here.

LOL - that’s a person’s opinion. When something is a fact you don’t find the word “likely” doing a lot of heavy lifting like it does in that judgement. Also, from one of the most conservative circuits in the US, which gives politicized rulings all the time.

A circuit Court judge's ruling is just an opinion? Your excuses are getting worse and worse.

I am well aware of that. I am asking YOU if YOU are saying that we should not believe it when Trump tells us what he will do.
With Trump I worry about what he does and not what he says. He's a lot of bluster, but he normally doesn't follow through.

The hypotheticals they listed in the article are insane fearmongering. Trump didn't give any illegal orders to the military including on January 6th.

They don't want him to be able to use the insurrection act which he or any president is able to use. Why do you think they don't want him to use it?

Tell that to the people who are going to jail for doing his bidding. Including aides, associates and regular people who got sucked into his lies about the election.

So, what, exactly, is wrong with trying to prevent the president from using the Insurrection Act in an illegal manner?

It's a false premise. They want to prevent him from using it and are trying to do that under the guise of it being an illegal order.

Aren't there safeguards already in place that prevent the military from following illegal orders?

Yes, and education is key. You have to educate on what is exactly an illegal order. Why would you be against such education taking place?

And you especially have to have strong education when a political candidate is promising to misuse the military.

Well, if their premise is to prevent the president from using the Insurrection Act in an illegal manner by using the courts or Congress, they wouldn't likely get very far if the order wasn't illegal, now, would they?

And, yeah, there are safeguards. Every member of the military takes an oath to follow lawful orders, and (at least in the Air Force) receive annual refresher training that emphasizes the fact that you are not supposed to follow unlawful orders. The UCMJ and Courts Martial are the enforcement mechanism. With that said, I would hope you would agree that simply training everyone not to follow illegal orders is no guarantee that they won't do so, and that young impressionable military members who are given an order by their commander, that came from the Secretary of Defense, might assume that an order using the insurrection act is a lawful order.
