Anxiety surges as Donald Trump may be indicted soon: Why 2024 is 'the final battle' and 'the big one'

WASHINGTON – It looks like American politics is entering a new age of anxiety, triggered by an unprecedented legal development: The potential indictment of a former president and current presidential candidate.

Donald Trump's many legal problems – and calls for protests by his followers – have generated new fears of political violence and anxiety about the unknowable impact all this will have on the already-tense 2024 presidential election

I’ll reframe this is a more accurate way, Are Presidents above the law? This new age was spurred into existence when home grown dummies elected a corrupt, mentally ill, anti-democratic, would be dictator as President and don’t bother to hold him responsible for his crimes, don’t want to because in the ensuing mayhem and destruction, they think they will be better off. The man is actually advocating violence (not the first time). And btw, screw democracy too. If this feeling spreads, we are In deep shirt.

This goes beyond one treasonous Peice of work and out to all his minions. This is on you or should we be sympathetic to the idea of they can’t help being selfish suckers to the Nation’s detriment? Donald Trump is the single largest individual threat to our democracy and it‘s all going to boil down to will the majority of the GOP return to his embrace and start slinging his excrement to support him?

trump should be in one of the desks because that's his education level. Whats up with the black kid? they all look like they are from some private school

I am by nature an optimistic guy.. Just look at my SR handle for chrissakes.. but i find it hard to believe there’s a gotdam thing that any of us who didnt vote for this lunatic can do at this point…. As far as im concerned, there are only two valid options: 1) Vote with ur feet and move out of America.. this is the option i chose when i saw the handwriting on the wall last year.. But I realize this isn’t a realistic option for everyone… or 2) Roll over and accept that the dummies are in charge .. the way our system is set up, there’s not really a way to stop this freight train.. which leads me back to the first option- i realized a while back that any country where roughly half the population votes for a guy like Trump TWICE is no country i want to live in.. Again, though, I realize leaving isn’t an option for everyone .
My hope lies in the midterms. Hopefully we can weather the next 21 months or so, have Democrats gain enough seats to take the house and senate, and then there will be the chutzpah to fight back. I doubt it will be enough of a blue wave to get to 2/3rds vote in the senate to impeach, but at least enough to stand against the fat, dumb, foolish cheato.

Donald Trump gathered school children in a mock classroom scene at the White House on Thursday afternoon to witness the signing of an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education.

As the children watched from their small desks, each with their own replica executive orders to sign along with Trump, the president began his remarks with an update on the horrors of Ukraine’s war.…..

This is almost unbelievable. It’s like forcing the children to witness the execution of their teachers.

No one can say they didn’t know.

During his first official campaign rally for the 2024 Republican nomination, held in Waco, Texas, Donald Trump vowed retribution against those he perceives as his enemies.

“I am your warrior,” he said to his supporters. “I am your justice. For those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”

Sixty days into Trump’s second term, we have begun to see what that looks like.

The president fired the archivist of the United States because he was enraged at the National Archives for notifying the Justice Department of his alleged mishandling of classified documents after he left office following his first term. (The archivist he fired hadn’t even been working for the agency at the time, but that didn’t matter.)

He also fired two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission, a traditionally independent regulatory agency, in violation of Supreme Court precedent and quite likely the language of the statute that created it. (Both members plan to sue to reverse the firings.)

Trump stripped security details from people he had appointed to high office in his first administration and subsequently fell out with, including General Mark Milley, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, the former diplomat Brian Hook, and the infectious-disease expert Anthony Fauci.

The National Institutes of Health, where Fauci worked for 45 years, is being gutted by the Trump administration. The environment there has become “suffocatingly toxic,” as my colleague Katherine J. Wu reported.

Trump has sued networks and newspapers for millions of dollars. His Federal Communications Commission is investigating several outlets.

And he has called CNN and MSNBC “corrupt” and “illegal”—not because they have broken any laws, but simply because they have been critical of him.

Trump’s FBI director, Kash Patel, told the MAGA podcaster Steve Bannon in a 2023 interview that “we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections—we’re going to come after you.”

Trump has also come after the legal profession, expanding his attacks on private law firms and threatening the ability of lawyers to do their job and private citizens to obtain legal counsel.

U.S. Marshals have warned federal judges of unusually high threat levels as Elon Musk and other Trump-administration allies “ramp up efforts to discredit judges,” according to a Reuters report.

On his social-media site, Musk has attacked judges in more than 30 posts since the end of January, calling them “corrupt,” “radical,” and “evil,” and deriding the “TYRANNY of the JUDICIARY.”..............

Trump’s Appetite for Revenge Is Insatiable

The Justice Department (DOJ) plans to create a process for those with criminal convictions to restore their gun rights, sparking alarm it will return firearms to those convicted of violent crimes.

The interim rule, posted in the Federal Register Thursday, follows a February executive order from President Trump directing a review of the country’s gun restrictions to “assess any ongoing infringements.”

President Trump on Friday night rescinded the security clearances of former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, several members of the Biden administration, and other prominent Democrats.

The move comes after Mr. Trump had already announced last month that he was revoking former President Joe Biden's security clearance. In a memo Friday, the president said he was also rescinding the security clearances of the entire Biden family.

Also losing their access to classified information and their security clearances were former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, New York Attorney General Letita James, Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg, former White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, former Rep. Elizabeth Cheney, former White House Russia expert Fiona Hill, former Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, former U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic Norman Eisen, and attorney Mark Zaid, who was a lawyer for the whistleblower who reported concerns about the Mr. Trump's dealings with Ukraine in his first White House term.…….

Ironic since Trump himself seems to pay no mind to his own security clearance information.. He appears to conduct foreign policy based on what he sees on right-wing social media or what he hears on Joe Rogan’s podcast… We are doomed .

Entering the magnificent great hall of the US Department of Justice, Donald Trump stopped for a moment to admire his portrait then took to a specially constructed stage where two art deco statues, depicting the “Spirit of Justice” and “Majesty of Justice”, had been carefully concealed behind a blue velvet curtain.

The president, who since last year is also a convicted criminal, proceeded to air grievances, utter a profanity and accuse the news media of doing “totally illegal” things, without offering evidence. “I just hope you can all watch for it,” he told justice department employees, “but it’s totally illegal.”

Trump’s breach of the justice department’s traditional independence last week was neither shocking nor surprising. His speech quickly faded from the fast and furious news cycle.

But future historians may regard it as a milestone on a road leading the world’s oldest continuous democracy to a once unthinkable destination.

Eviscerating the federal government and subjugating Congress; defying court orders and delegitimising judges; deporting immigrants and arresting protesters without due process; chilling free speech at universities and cultural institutions; cowing news outlets with divide-and-rule.

Add a rightwing media ecosystem manufacturing consent and obeyance in advance, along with a weak and divided opposition offering feeble resistance. Join all the dots, critics say, and America is sleepwalking into authoritarianism.

“These are flashing red lights here,” Tara Setmayer, a former Republican communications director turned Trump critic.

“We are approaching Defcon 1 for our democracy and a lot of people in the media and the opposition leadership don’t seem to be communicating that to the American people. That is the biggest danger of the moment we’re in now: the normalisation of it.”

Much was said and written by journalists and Democrats during last year’s election campaign arguing that Trump, who instigated a coup against the US government on January 6, 2021, could endanger America’s 240-year experiment with democracy if he returned to power.

In a TV interview he had promised to be “dictator” but only on “day one”. Sixty days in, the only question is whether the warnings went far enough……..

I think they should consider it a badge of honor. Especially since we are seeing so many cower in fear before Trump, who is a bully in the coarsest sense.

I think that’s true of a lot of Americans

I think it’s true that a lot of Americans aren’t in denial they, said/knew/warned that this would happen (but I think a lot of this group are hoping that GOP/MAGA realizes what’s happening and rebels

But….the GOP and MAGA make up another group of Americans who aren’t in denial about what’s happening because they love what’s happening

Because from their point of view this is happening in their favor

If Trump doesn’t survive this term, because let’s be honest, he isn’t the definition of perfect health. And I’m saying that as someone who is a little overweight.
Do y’all think the GOP’s language or tone in general changes with JD?

I don’t think so. If anything, Vance would be worse because he isn’t as stupid as Trump but he is just as twisted and diabolical.
