I figured we needed a thread specifically about the media.

There was a very big correction recently by the Washington Post.

That story was supposedly "independently confirmed" by CNN, NBC News, USA Today, ABC News, & PBS News Hour. How could they all have gotten the quote wrong if they actually independently confirmed the story?

Why do all the errors always go in one political direction and not closer to 50/50?

Well this is an excellent idea

Meta will dismantle its extensive fact-checking program, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday, ending a practice that has sought to limit the spread of falsehoods on its platform but has been assailed as censorship in conservative circles.

The company said it would allow its users to write and rate notes that appear next to specific posts, adding context or debunking key claims. In a video accompanying a Meta blog post, Zuckerberg cited errors made by the company’s fact-checking team and alluded to the presidential election victory of Donald Trump, who has often raged against fact-checking as an impediment to free speech.

“We’ve reached a point where it’s just too many mistakes and too much censorship,” Zuckerberg said. “The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech. So we are going to get back to our roots, focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms.”…….

Zuckerberg is an idiot. Always has been, always will be.

Even when she was writing as a complete conservative, I found her columns to be reasonable and well written. So, of course she has no place in the current GOP. There’s no room for a reasonable conservative in MAGA.

Over 400 staff members at the Washington Posthave sent a letter to Jeff Bezos asking for a meeting with him during a time of widespread concern about the future of the newspaper.

The letter, signed by top journalists and correspondents and sent on Tuesday evening, pleads for Bezos, who is known to rarely visit the Post’s office in Washington, to meet in person with leaders at the office.

“We are deeply alarmed by recent leadership decisions that have led readers to question the integrity of this institution, broken with a tradition of transparency, and prompted some of our most distinguished colleagues to leave, with more departures imminent,” the letter reads. NPR first reported the letter.

“This is about retaining our competitive edge, restoring trust that has been lost, and re-establishing a relationship with leadership based on open communication,” it continues.

The letter claims these concerns are unrelated to Bezos’ recent decision to end its endorsement of US presidential candidates, which the letter writers acknowledge as “the owner’s prerogative”.

The Post lost 250,000 subscribers, or 10% of its subscription base, following its decision not to endorse. This reportedly was a massive contributor to the paper losing a whopping $100m in 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal.……

Too late. I don’t trust Bezos at all and that has tainted the Post for me.

The Washington Post, which adopted the slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness” after Donald Trump’s first inauguration, is now pushing a new mission statement to its employees as Trump prepares to take office for a second time, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

Concocted as an “internal rallying point” for staff and not currently meant to replace the paper’s public slogan, the new statement reads: “Riveting Storytelling for All of America.”……

That's that bullshirt right there. Bunch of pansies...

Yeah the Post is at a major crossroads - all begun when Bezos pulled the editorial endorsement. Might have marked the end of a truly important major American newspaper.

WaPo is on its way to becoming the New York Post.

Traditional newspapers are becoming outdated, with many of the remaining ones catering to the lowest instincts of their audience. They increasingly resemble gossip and outrage sources, designed to provide an emotional fix rather than meaningful information.

The future of news seems to lie in blogs, platforms like Substack, and, to some extent, YouTube. These outlets often require a subscription to access their full content, but they offer a more personalized experience. Paid subscribers frequently enjoy direct interactions with editors and writers, including personal replies and participation in town hall-style sessions.

Personally, I’ve shifted my support from three traditional newspaper sites, including The Washington Post, to independent outlets such as The New Contrarian and Dan Rather’s platform. I value factual reporting over gossip and sensationalism, which too often pander to base emotions rather than informing readers.

Media has fractured. Anyone with a podcast/blog/whatever is now “Media”. That is the environment that must be negotiated by politicians in particular and the public in general. This means someone can find any media source to echo their belief structure.
