The Canadian Journalism Federation is taking fake news very seriously. I've worked with media literacy for years, and this is - to date - the most expansively public approach that I've seen, in advance of the Federal Election.

If you are engaged online, you have likely been subjected to something that was not true, and yet there isn't much pursuit in trying to determine factual accuracy of the articles and information. And most of us - probably every single one of us here - have fallen for it.

Recent polling by Ipsos, Earnscliffe Strategy Group and MIT researchers suggests nearly all Canadians have come across misinformation online, yet only 40 per cent feel they know how to differentiate between fake news and the real thing.

The polls also found 90 per cent of Canadians admitted to falling for fake news in the past, and only a third of them regularly check to see if the stories they’re consuming are legitimate.

I don't think that their approach is going to be enough. I think the most effective utility it will have is bringing awareness. But fuller approaches to media literacy are going to be necessary to combat the deluge of increasingly deceptive media. These are hard skills that can be learned, but with the advent of new 'deep fake' technology, media literacy is going to have adapt, too.

I would like to see greater emphasis on media literacy in the US. Because even though this statement is for the Canadian audience, it definitely - maybe even more so - applies to the US where news is more infotainment and sensationalized than it is up here:
“To be an engaged citizen, you have to have access to quality journalism… you have to understand what is quality journalism and what is not,” said Richard Gingras, vice-president of Google News.

Another source includes one approach - the SPOT approach: https://www.manitoulin.ca/news-media-canada-launches-new-tool-to-help-people-spot-fake-news/

SPOT is an acronym that acts as a simple way to remember the four principles of identifying misinformation. It works like this:
S: Is this a credible source? Check the source of the article—and be skeptical.
P: Is the perspective biased? Think critically and look for varying viewpoints on an issue.
O: Are other sources reporting the same story? Be your own fact-checker and verify the validity of the story.
T: Is the story timely? Check the date the story was published—sometimes, stories use old information to take advantage of a timely occurrence.

It's obviously not enough, but a decent start.

Do you remember the whole Obama birth certificate thing and how comical it was with those crazy right wingers?

Oh yeah.. Trump was leading the charge. He does love conspiracy theories. He said that he'd sent his "investigators" to Hawaii to get the goods on Obama.

Trump is a fattish, old, egotistical liar with paralyzing ignorance.

Steakumms has some stuff to say: (great Twitter follow, btw)

I have been meaning to keep this thread up to date, but here is a good example. Keep in mind that MSNBC is trying to mislead its own viewers:

But's ok when they do it lol

I remember when videos of Biden's speeches were taken down from twitter because they were not the full clip of a speech, because one part made him look bad. But this is perfectly ok for MSNBC to do.

I personally love how all these other threads explode just the heartland is exploding with coronavirus cases.

Three card monte game of look over here doesn't trump the short comings of the administration.

I know it is your favorite trick make a story to take the heat away from the real problem.

    It is not working.

Try and dig up more old threads so you can hide from the coronavirus!

According to Moosey we can only discuss Covid. Please stop with you childish posts.

    But TRUMP!!
It would be comical if it wasn't so sad and pathetic. But it is just sad and pathetic.
When it comes to misinformation, fake news, etc, isn't it on point to mention our current president? He made his political career, at least the start of it, by misinformation and spreading lies. Various counter intelligence experts have mentioned that he has a problem with spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories on his own Twitter page. He treats his twitter page like a his campaign spokesman (which, is far enough, except he also wants it to be the official Presidential one), which I guess has no obligation to the truth.

Noting hypocrisy by those in power, is as old as time its self.

There should be an expectation that outside of "campaigning" our government officials are giving us the fullest version of the truth that doesn't jeopardize national security. We should expect straight forward, helpful information. Take a look at the BLS site, or the IRS site. They're dry and boring, but they lay out ever bit of information as clearly as possible. When that kind of information becomes too twisted we all suffer for it.

None of this means that we let various media outlets off the hook either. We should expect better in all cases.

Well, just take into consideration that in the last few days he expressed an opinion that if someone got drunk in public, flashed a lot of cash and was subsequently robbed that person would have no right to complain. No one would be to blame but the drunk himself.

When someone tells you who they are like that, believe them.

This is an excellent example of a news organization manipulating a quote to further a narrative. Most of the major television outlets do the same thing, though not often this blatantly. They package the news to fit the way they want their audience to perceive the information in order to influence points of view. MSNBC and FoxNews do it constantly with their shock banners and chyrons, while they slide seamlessly into a talking head telling you how you should interpret the information. Shameless.

    Excuse me.

So what are you even talking about?

Got a fever? Been out shopping without a mask?

I would agree but you also have to understand they are the forking same thing just 180 degrees apart because they were both invented by Roger!

That is what they are 24 hour a day opinion networks designed by Roger to be the exact opposite because he was fired from NBC and pitched the exact opposite opinion network to fox.

Here is the problem I as a Democrat can except both of the short comings what is a republican to do? They have other networks?

Now you can look at this all kinds of ways. MSNBC employs lots of ex republicans because the republican party has gone so far from what it use to be but they were not ex republicans when they were hired.

I was just recalling when you shared some of your family "values."

But that is not what we are talking about here.

We are talking about a guy in his early twenties that always has a camera pointed at his door. Those guys tend to post videos online tweet and so on.

If you post videos or pics of yourself firing or posing with said gun crooks that recognize you then can target you. You then put a target on your back for crooks.

If this is the case here it is the same the guy that gets sloppy drunk and complains after he gets rolled in the quarter. He put a target on his back he has nothing to complain about because he made himself low hanging fruit.

If it is not the case and just truly random fine. I would bet that they had some idea what they were going to steal. If it was that giant box from the TV that was delivered caught their eye or a friend bragged about his ar15 to the wrong person.

Totally random break-ins don't happen that much.

But yeah he could have saved his door by racking a twelve gauge just the same. That video doesn't do one thing for ar15 rights actually.

    Hi beach dude!

I am glad you are of the camp that even the tiny shirt goes way over your head.

The drunk guy getting rolled in the quarter was an analogy. It was comparing the idiot that social medias all his stuff and then complains when he has criminals at his door.

But yes I am sure you would be the drunk guy that gets rolled and cry's about crime rather than look inward to fix
    obvious problems.

It kinda fits like crying about the Mexicans stealing your jobs chant build a wall rather than look at why they are. You know looking inward for answers rather than point your lazy finger. You see it fits like a glove.

I'm actually going to side with BF on this one. In the case of the drunk guy getting rolled and the guy getting robbed, you are blaming the victim. It's like saying a victim of sexual assault shouldn't have been where they were or should have worn a different outfit.
