This is going to need a thread as we move forward - there are now clear signs that Trump supports a new, critical if not dubious approach on vaccination, and his HHS nominee RFK Jr. regularly espouses eating raw milk and raw meat . . . dietary components most experts agree are more dangerous than their heated counterparts.

Health is certainly one of those areas were anti-institutionalism and turning to popular influencers over medical science comes with genuine risk of harm.

Today Trump provided his most clear indication that he is a vaccine skeptic - claiming (falsely of course) that the USA doesn't "do as well" as other nations that use no vaccines at all.

Did you see that scientists have made some insulin producing cells that escape notice of the body’s immune system? They have injected them into a patient’s forearm, where they have settled and been producing insulin for about 3 months now with no immune response. No immunosuppressant therapy needed. I wish I had saved the article. They genetically altered the cells so they wouldn’t trigger immune response.
I did, but I always remain pessimistically optimistic with these studies. When I was diagnosed in 85, I was told we were within five to ten years of having a cure. It pisses me off some doctors still make that claim. Guess they're going to keep saying it until it happens.

These guys are out here cosplaying at being scientists with a dangerous pathogen. They suck so very hard.

The Trump administration has canceled $766 million awarded to drugmaker Moderna Inc. to develop a vaccine against potential pandemic influenza viruses, including the H5N1 bird flu.

The company said it was notified Wednesday that the Health and Human Services Department had withdrawn funds awarded in July 2024 and in January to pay for development and purchase of its investigational vaccine.

The funds were awarded through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, a program that focuses on medical treatments for potential pandemics.

The new vaccine, called mRNA-1018, used the same technology that allowed development and rollout of vaccines to fight Covid in record time.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed deep skepticism regarding mRNA vaccines, despite real-world evidence that the vaccines are safe and saved millions of lives.

The cancellation came as Moderna announced positive interim results from an early-stage trial of the vaccine that targeted H5 bird flu virus, tested in 300 healthy adults.

“While the termination of funding from HHS adds uncertainty, we are pleased by the robust immune response and safety profile observed in this interim analysis,” the company said in a statement.

H5N1 bird flu viruses spilled from wild bird into cattle in the U.S. last year, infecting hundreds of animals in several states. At least 70 people in the U.S. have been sickened by bird flu infections, mostly mild. One person died. Scientists fear that continued mutation of the virus could allow it to become more virulent or more easily spread in people, with the possibility that it could trigger a pandemic..............

Hopefully some of those scientist relocate to Canada or Europe. because there is no doubt that the US will be point zero for the next pandemic. It will be the Trump flu - not the china flu that the world will face next.

Very much so. Children overseas? MAGA doesn’t care about them. It will take some time but people here especially kids will make some of MAGA change their minds. That being said too many of MAGA are too far gone into the cult of Trump and American theomythology.
Won't happen. This is the party that is perfectly fine with kids being murdered in school shootings. Best you will get out of them is 'thoughts and prayers'

The new cuts are especially damaging because health departments are funded differently than other government agencies meant to protect the public: Funding pours in during emergencies and slows to a relative trickle when they subside. Public health leaders often cite the contrast with fire departments, which are kept ready at all times, not scrambling to find firefighters and fire trucks when houses are already burning.

Yes, this is bad as usual, red states are going to get hit the worst. I just don't know what the Christian nationalists are getting out of this.

I just read this on BlueSky. Both yesterday and today my salads at lunch had a lot of cucumbers. Just great that we don’t get alerted about this in a timely manner.

At least 20 Planned Parenthood clinics across seven states have shuttered since the start of 2025 or have announced plans to close soon – closures that come amid immense financial and political turbulence for the reproductive health giant as the United States continues to grapple with the fallout from the end of Roe v Wade.

The Planned Parenthood network, which operates nearly 600 clinics through a web of independent regional affiliates and is overseen by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, is facing a number of threats from the Trump administration.

A Guardian analysis has found that Planned Parenthood closures have occurred or are in the works across six affiliates that maintain clinics in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Utah and Vermont.

In late March, the Trump administration suddenly froze tens of millions of dollars in funding for nine Planned Parenthood affiliates, including at least two that have since closed clinics or are set to do so soon.

The funding, which flowed from the federal family planning program Title X, was used to provide services such as contraception, cancerscreenings and STI tests.

“The ways in which this administration is dismantling access to public health and public health information are really troubling and, frankly, force us to make these difficult decisions very quickly,” said Shireen Ghorbani, interim president of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, which saw $2.8m of its Title X funding – 20% of the affiliate’s budget – frozen under the Trump administration.

It has since closed two clinics as well as laid off a number of staffers who worked on initiatives like sex education.

Last year, Ghorbani said, 26,000 Utahns received Title X-funded care at Planned Parenthood. Ghorbani does not believe that Utah’s Republican-controlled state legislature will step in to create a substitute program.……..

Well this is more just Trump cutting funding for pretty much all health services. But you know no one will protect a woman like him :poop:

    The protector of woman.

Trump administration revokes guidance requiring hospitals to provide emergency abortions
This will directly lead to women who are having emergency pregnancy complications dying needlessly.

Some of America’s favorite snacks may be banned in certain parts of the U.S. if the packaging does not warn about certain ingredients.

New legislation in Texas would warn consumers in the state about ingredients that are “not recommended for human consumption” in other countries, but still allowed in the U.S., Bloomberg reported.

More than 40 ingredients, from synthetic food dyes to bleached flour, would require warning labels on the products’ packaging starting in 2027, if the bill is signed into law.

The legislation would affect snacks and candies such as Nacho Cheese Doritos, Little Bites Chocolate Chip Muffins, Skittles, M&Ms and Sour Patch Kids Watermelon, as well as breakfast cereals and sodas such as Froot Loops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Mountain Dew.

If the bill is signed by Governor Greg Abbott, it would affect snacks sold statewide. This could also open the door for a nationwide switch-up. Bloomberg reported that companies forced to comply with state regulations often chose to roll out changes across the whole country to streamline production.………

Industry groups and companies, including food and drink makers and retail giant Walmart, had sent a letter to Texas lawmakers “in strong opposition” to the bill.

“As it’s written, the food labeling provision in this bill casts an incredibly wide net — triggering warning labels on everyday grocery items based on assertions that foreign governments have banned such items, rather than on standards established by Texas regulators or by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,” read the letter, which had circulated on social media.

The letter warned that this potential change “could destabilize local and regional economies at a time when businesses are already fighting to keep prices down, maintain inventory, and avoid layoffs.”

If the bill did get signed into law, it would be a win for not only Texas lawmakers but Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vocal critic of certain chemicals in food like synthetic dyes. Supporters of the Texas bill have claimed that Kennedy backs the legislation, Bloomberg reported.……..

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz defended President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” over criticism that millions of people could lose health coverage, saying those who would face new work requirements should “prove that you matter.”

Oz made the comments during an interview Wednesday on Fox Business, arguing that when Medicaid was created in the 1960s lawmakers did not include work requirements because it “never dawned on anybody that able-bodied people who work would be on Medicaid.”

“We’re asking that able-bodied individuals who are able to go back to work at least try to get a job or at least volunteer or take care of loved-one who needs help or go back to school,” he said. “Do something that shows you have agency over your future.”

If Americans are willing to do that, he added, they should be able to be enrolled or stay enrolled in Medicaid.

“But if you are not willing to do those things, we are going to ask you to do something else. Go on the exchange, or get a job and get onto regular commercial insurance. But we are not going to continue to pay for Medicaid for those audiences.”..................
