This is going to need a thread as we move forward - there are now clear signs that Trump supports a new, critical if not dubious approach on vaccination, and his HHS nominee RFK Jr. regularly espouses eating raw milk and raw meat . . . dietary components most experts agree are more dangerous than their heated counterparts.

Health is certainly one of those areas were anti-institutionalism and turning to popular influencers over medical science comes with genuine risk of harm.

Today Trump provided his most clear indication that he is a vaccine skeptic - claiming (falsely of course) that the USA doesn't "do as well" as other nations that use no vaccines at all.

How did we get supposedly reasonable GOP senators to confirm this anti-science, anti-vaccine evil person to head this vital agency?

Because they are not. Reasonable and GOP are two words that are diametrically opposed.

Just one. John Kennedy La. He had the power to block the nomination, but caved to the orange cheeto
Even so, my state has one “reasonable” Senator and one MAGA idiot. Even the so-called reasonable one voted to confirm. It was gob-smacking incompetence to vote for this man.

I still blame Kennedy the most. He's a physician for crying out loud. He told Jr. during the nomination process that
vaccines don't cause autism. He violated his ethics code as far as I'm concerned.

My state is the same way. One reasonable Rep. senator and one maga moron.

This I agree with. But not only will drug companies fight it I imagine TV stations and other media will as well

These ads have to make up a big part of their advertising revenue
    ================

Wegovy, Farxiga, Vraylar ... the stream of drug ads on TV has gotten so pervasive that they’re bringing together an unlikely pair of politicians to take them on.

Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats, is backing an effort pushed by Trump Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to ban pharmaceutical ads on TV.

Sanders introduced the End Prescription Drug Ads Now Act alongside fellow independent Senator Angus King of Maine. They both caucus with the Democrats. If passed, the legislation would ban prescription drug ads from TV, radio, print, digital platforms, and social media.

Those critical of the ads argue that they push the price of healthcare even higher, even as they don’t help to improve the care patients receive.

Supporters of the ads say that they can increase patients’ understanding of the care available…….

yes they need to go. Plus those drugs tend to be not every effective and people ask their dogs to prescribe them even if they don't need them

yes, patients are to blame as well. I've had several doctors tell me some of their patients ask for anti-biotics
for viral infections, and get mad when they don't prescribe them.

As top US health officials turn against some mRNA vaccines, experts fear for the country’s preparedness for the next pandemic and worry that other vaccines will be targeted next.

Donald Trump’s administration recently canceled a $766m award to Moderna on the research and development of H5N1 bird flu vaccines, and officials have announced new restrictions and regulations for Covid mRNA vaccines – actions that signal a move away from the breakthrough technology.

These changes add to other vaccine-related shakeups at health agencies, including layoffs and resignations of top vaccine officials and the abrupt termination of HIV vaccine research.

On Monday, Robert F Kennedy Jr, secretary of health and human services, announced he was disbanding the independent advisory committee on vaccines for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“I think mRNA vaccines are particularly at risk, although I think all vaccines are at risk,” said Paul Offit, professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

“I think that this administration will do everything it can to make vaccines less available, less affordable and more feared.”

Messenger RNA, or mRNA, vaccines heralded a major breakthrough in battling the Covid pandemic, building on three decades of scientific work and earning a Nobel prize.

The Covid vaccines, some of which were co-developed by US government scientists, were taken by millions of people around the globe, and international scientists and officials closely monitored their side effects and effectiveness.…..

I read today it was Bill Cassidy who had the deciding vote to confirm RFK, Jr, not Kennedy. Cassidy is a physician, ffs, and said he was promised by RFK, Jr that he wouldn’t disband the very committee he just did and that he wouldn’t appoint anti-vaxers, which he just did. Cassidy should lose his job over this.

Also RFK, Jr is just a horrible, unserious, evil person.

For over a decade, a group of food safety, environmental, and animal welfare nonprofits has petitioned the US Food and Drug Administration — which Kennedy now oversees — to ban the use of one of the most controversial of those drugs: ractopamine hydrochloride.

Fed to pigs in the final weeks of their lives, ractopamine speeds up muscle gain so that pork producers can squeeze more profit from each animal. But the drug has been linked to severe adverse events in pigs, including trembling, reluctance to move, collapse, inability to stand up, hoof disorders, difficulty breathing, and even death. It also carries a number of environmental and human health concerns.

Earlier this year, the FDA denied the petition to ban the drug, arguing that current regulations ensure a “reasonable certainty of no harm to consumers.”

Earlier this year, the FDA denied the petition to ban the drug, arguing that current regulations ensure a “reasonable certainty of no harm to consumers.”

This decision by the FDA to deny a ban on ractopamine is deeply troubling—and it highlights a larger pattern of regulatory capture and willful ignorance. Ractopamine has been banned in over 160 countries, including the EU, China, and Russia, because of well-documented adverse effects on animal welfare and the glaring lack of data on long-term human health impacts. The only known human trial was ended prematurely due to side effects—including a racing heartbeat—yet the FDA continues to claim "reasonable certainty of no harm." That’s not science. That’s spin.

Even more disturbing is that RFK Jr., who now oversees the agency, is lending credibility to this decision despite his notorious lack of scientific grounding. This is the same man who has spent years spreading dangerously misleading information about vaccines and public health. Now, instead of championing rigorous evidence-based policy, he’s endorsing the continued use of a drug that causes suffering in animals and poses unassessed risks to humans.

How can someone who routinely questions settled science on vaccines suddenly trust the integrity of corporate-backed research when it benefits Big Ag? The hypocrisy is stunning.
This isn't about left or right—it's about whether the regulatory agencies serve the public or profit margins. And right now, the FDA and RFK Jr. are siding with the latter.

RFK, Jr lying about his horrible appointees. He only cares that they are anti-vax. Nothing else matters to him, including whether children will die because of him. They already have and they will continue to die as long as he is running things.

A scientist in charge of Covid-19 and respiratory syncytial virus data has abruptly resigned, telling colleagues she doesn’t trust the Centers for Disease Control under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will use it “objectively.”

Fiona Havers led the CDC’s surveillance of hospitalizations for Covid-19 and RSV until she resigned in a Monday morning email. According to her LinkedIn profile, she had worked at the CDC since 2012.

“Unfortunately, I no longer have confidence that these data will be used objectively or evaluated with appropriate scientific rigor to make evidence-based vaccine policy decisions,” her email, which was obtained and reported on by The Washington Post, read……..

I am surprised there are any real people left. the CDC is history and is crashing.

What's at stake if the levels don't drop? "You get heart disease, you get heart disease, and you get heart disease. Everyone gets heart disease and most of you would get dementia and/or cancer if not for the heart disease killing you first."

Yes, I'm exaggerating, but not a lot.
