Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

This was published 2 days into the war and has since been removed. They assumed it would be quick and the essay was to be a victory celebration. Not surprisingly, the essay reflects what Putin was rambling before the invasion: that Ukraine wasn't really a nation. And strangely enough, the argument sounds suspiciously similar to what China can use for an invasion of Taiwan. (CNN interviewed Max Seddon and he reference this article)

    WOW!
Did someone in the old European capitals, in Paris and Berlin , seriously believe that Moscow would give up Kiev ? That the Russians will forever be a divided people? And at the same time when Europe is uniting, when the German and French elites are trying to seize control of European integration from the Anglo-Saxons and assemble a united Europe? Forgetting that the unification of Europe became possible only thanks to the unification of Germany, which happened according to the good Russian (albeit not very smart) will. To swipe after that also on Russian lands is not even the height of ingratitude, but of geopolitical stupidity. The West as a whole, and even more so Europe in particular, did not have the strength to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence, and even more so to take Ukraine for itself. In order not to understand this, one had to be just geopolitical fools.
More precisely, there was only one option: to bet on the further collapse of Russia, that is, the Russian Federation. But the fact that it did not work should have been clear twenty years ago. And already fifteen years ago, after Putin's Munich speech, even the deaf could hear - Russia is returning.
Petr Akopov really misses the USSR.

This is the crap that Russians are being fed. Ukraine barely has military hardware. They are begging for anything. Now they have ballistic missiles. Does it remind anyone else of a certain network in primetime?

I continue to think about this. I think Trump's comments about the Russian invasion of Ukraine are going to be terribly damaging for him as time goes on. This shows so much about Trump's worldview and inability to ever consider the interests of regular people. Viewing Putin's gambit as "genius" and "smart" is just a terrible take - horrible judgment to think that in the first place, and even worse to say it publicly.

Even his own club members seem tired of his shirt already.

That's a lot of explosions hitting those apartment buildings.

I’m afraid we ve now reached the next phase of indiscriminate killings. I am not a praying person, but I will hope the best for Ukrainians. If they can hold for a little longer, the Russian offensive will collapse from lack of funds.

Quick edit….Russia now do not care about the ruse of liberating anything. The moral cuffs are off. And I m concerned.

Tom Cotton said the same bs. And if anyone tells you that trump imposed tougher sanctions, remember that those sanctions was a response to the congress fearing trump was getting too close to Putin. And it was passed with a veto proof majority. Trump only signed knowing he had no choice and wasn’t pleased.
