I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

I hope Biden sees the results from this trial, and understands the idea of a bipartisan movement for legislation is a pipe dream.

Schumer will have to remove the filibuster in the Senate if the Democrats hope to get anything meaningful accomplished during the next two years. They cannot afford to make the same mistakes they made back in 2009 - 2010 when Obama first became President.

There is not a Republican voter alive who gives a flying fork how bipartisan Biden and the Democrats are. Republicans are going to spit on Democrats every chance they get no matter what, which took Obama way too long to realize.

Well, it's all over, for better or worse.

Would it be useful to create a seperate thread for "what happens to Trump next" ? After all, various democratic AG's have been threatening him with investigations since 2016. (along with various private individuals). Will these now actually play out, or where they all just political statements for the benefit of the press ?

Graham said he’s going to Florida to talk with Trump about the future of the Republican Party. He’s going to try to convince him to quit attacking other Republicans so they can unite the Party. I know the democrats are getting a lot of criticism for not dragging out that trial for weeks, BUT this is a great example of why it was pointless. Imagine being so completely clueless about Trump’s makeup at this point that you think you can convince him to go along with anything for the greater good of the party. Really, Lindsey? You think Trump is capable of doing anything for the greater good of the party? You think you will convince him not to attack those who voted against him? Not to endorse crazy Q candidates? I guess Lindsey just isn’t all that bright.

So I’m really glad that this impeachment trial is over.. Sadly, we all knew how it was gonna end.. We all knew what rat fink cowards the GOP are.. BUT i have high hopes for the onslaught of criminal cases about to come DJT’s way, much higher hopes than i ever had for the impeachment.. I’m not normally a vindictive person by nature- but i just wanna see this guy’s businesses go bankrupt (for real this time) and i want to see him and his kids rot under the jail.. Also, and this is important- i think it’d be very difficult to conduct a 2024 Presidential campaign from behind prison walls... The downside, and to me the ONLY downside- is that the criminal proceedings to come will keep DJT in the news for the next couple years at least.. But Biden and Congress wont be involved, at least the news can focus on their work and accomplishments, while the Trump circus can happen in the background with occasional stories of how it’s going, and hopefully eventually a conviction.

Yup .. good plan. I mean.. I can't IMAGINE why anyone would think you where being vindictive for that statement ?

The DoJ isn't going after Trump over this. I would be shocked. That is just Mitch posturing and playing politics. Let the Democratic President's DoJ go after the former Republican President so he can dodge criticism from his constituency.

Impeachment was the correct forum to try the President for this and Mitch dodged for political expediency. The constitutionality argument was raised and defeated.

This is how I see it as well...

Yeah, but think about that Dave. They would be lobbying "Biden's DoJ" to prosecute a former (R) President. What do you think that looks like to their constituents? Even if DoJ does AND convicts, that conviction is on whom? The Democrats. They had a chance to hold Trump accountable in the correct forum and they punted to protect their party, over the country and the Constitution.

Has about as much chance of happening as the R's voting to convict....

Must be nice being able to deflect from the utterly shameless egging on the people who attacked the Capitol. Who gives a shirt what the LP did or didn't do?
That wasn't a deflection. It was a response to her always dismissing the sources I post as not credible, but rarely ever saying what's inaccurate or untrue. People loved the Lincoln Project on here so if she wants to bring up credibility I brought up the Lincoln Project.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to point out how the left always said or acted like Trump was Hitler or a fascist, but they continued to vote to give Trump a bigger military budget and more surveillance powers. If he was as bad as they claimed, why in the world didn't they restrict him as much as possible?

The Democrats claimed this impeachment was so important, but they literally skipped witnesses because they wanted to be home for valentines day.

They also claimed how bad Trump's obstruction was from the Mueller report, but they didn't include any of those examples in their first articles of impeachment.

I agree with you about the witnesses. The Democrats said repeatedly that January 6, 2021 was terrible and a day that will live in infamy, and then they gave short thrift to the impeachment trial. That is hypocrisy. The Democrats had a responsibility to prosecute their case to the fullest extent with witnesses and totally humiliate and embarrass Trump and the spineless Republican Senators. They didn't do that. And I think the Democrats will regret this in the very near future.

That aside, I am curious as to whether you think Trump was a threat to the stability of this country and its institutions of government.
I don't think he was as big of a threat as the left and media claimed he was mainly due to incompetence.

I do think his actions after the election were horrible and the worst things he's done as President. His constant claims of the election being stolen was extremely harmful as well as still claiming that when he was supposed to be calming down the people who stormed the capital.

He deserved to be impeached although I don't think the Democrats cared about punishing him. It was all about preventing him from running again and also splitting the Republican party in two if they could have gotten enough Republican votes.

You're kind of contradicting yourself. You said you don't think Trump was that big of a threat, and then you concede that what he did after the election and on January 6th was horrible.

It looks to me like the Democrats were correct and you were wrong.

It was already black and white. And I get wanting to call witnesses, but I also get that it wouldn’t have made any difference and the responsible thing was to move on to other things.

I don’t think Trump has a chance next cycle. Without a voice from mainstream social media like Twitter, he’s not winning anything.

Whether or not it would have made any difference is not the point. The point is that Trump and the Republican Senators should have been forced to endure humiliation and contempt for several more weeks for what they did. If the shoe were on the foot, I guarantee McConnell would have paraded 100 witnesses and made this impeachment trial last a year. The Democrats still don't get that they are dealing with total fascists and they probably never will until the Republicans permanently control Congress and the White House.

I might agree with you about the 2024 election if it weren't for the electoral college. Trump only lost by ~45,000 votes going strictly by the EC. If Trump had won AZ, GA, and WI, it would have been a 269 - 269 tie in the EC and Trump would still be President.

I actually think he's got a point there though. Trump was incompetent, and after the election was over, his incompetence continued, but he never conceded and let people believe they could still affect the outcome of the election even after it was no longer in doubt.

Right, but Trump's incompetence was also a major threat to the country.

Whether you're cruel and competent or cruel and incompetent, you're still a major threat to the country regardless.

I encourage folks especially Louisianans to send a note to both LA senators. You know Cassidy is going to be hearing it from the nutballs and he deserves some kudos from sane people. And Kennedy deserves the opposite. I sent them both a message about how honor and respect for law and order are conservative values, and that the one lifelong republican of the two senators actually exhibited them today, while the opportunistic rodeo clown did not.

They give you a list of subjects to choose from when messaging them. Cassidy got "Congratulations" and Kennedy got "Crime" from me

Looking forward to their canned responses, particularly from ol Foghorn Leghorn.

Kennedy literally said, in his statement, that the Democrats did not give Trump a chance to be heard.
