I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

I read that the house managers couldn’t secure the cooperation of any witness but one, and it was probably going to be a significant delay while subpoenas were litigated. It’s also not a great idea to put a witness on the stand when you don’t know what they will say. So to keep on schedule, they decided to submit the Congresswoman’s statement into the record as testimony.

I think the house managers secured the most R votes they could probably have expected. Mitch is nothing but cynical to the core and he drug his followers with him by giving them that flimsy excuse of the bogus timing issue, which he himself engineered.

Unfortunately, I expect the DOJ to take their cue from Biden's disposition and decide not to pursue Trump for the sake of moving on. Biden won't tell them to do anything either way but his decision to not weigh in on this trial will probably color the DOJ's decision making.

Yes, and maybe I'm doing some wishful thinking here, but, that group of Congressional Republicans who voted to impeach, along with McConnell and a few others could submit a formal request for the DOJ to follow up and possibly charge Trump.

Then you'd have Republican backing for a DOJ investigation. The other possibility is there could be a commission established to investigate more fully what happened and if more evidence came out, that could also be referred to the DOJ for potential action.

I don't think this is anywhere close to finished. That much I think is true.

Yeah, but think about that Dave. They would be lobbying "Biden's DoJ" to prosecute a former (R) President. What do you think that looks like to their constituents? Even if DoJ does AND convicts, that conviction is on whom? The Democrats. They had a chance to hold Trump accountable in the correct forum and they punted to protect their party, over the country and the Constitution.

If the House felt it was justified to have a half dozen Benghazi investigations, there should be at least that many about 1/6/21.

Over half of the general population would like to see Trump held to account. The last figure I saw was 57%, which is huge for this divided time. This gives me hope.

Mitch made the same cynical calculation he made since 2016, he would rather not take direct action against Trump. But he left no doubt that he would like to see Trump taken down, he just didn’t have the will or the moral integrity to do what was right. Totally on brand for him.

Republicans still held control of the Senate during that time.

Right, but I honestly think THEN with things still rippling through, emotions running high, there was a better chance of getting more (R) behind it... vs say weeks later, all those emotions went away and the talking points emerged about unity and whatever bullshirt. This is all hypothetical of course, b/c ol' Mitch would have sat on it, like he did countless other times since basically being majority leader.

Kinda figured this is how it would go.

I hope, at the least, they work out Capitol security to never have a situation like this again.

Ladies and gentlemen welcome the GQP. The party of Trump, the party of insurrection. Let’s see where this heads now. The Republican Party is now completely tied to Trump

Well, 7 of them did vote to convict, which actually is about 5 more than I expected. But yeah, you're largely correct.

Further cynical shirking of their duty by passing it off to the DOJ.

I saw another tweet saying that civil law suits should be brought against Trump for everyone who suffered damages from the insurrection. Over 140 police officers were injured, some very seriously.

Well, this is all that's left. It needs to happen. Not just the civil suits, but I think Trump could be held criminally liable based on what we saw from the impeachment managers presentations.

They're full of crap. if the DOJ investigates, Trump will just take it to court, it will end up at SCOTUS, and what if they decide that only Impeachment is the way to punish him? Will the Senate re-vote?

It's an endless loop, and then they can try to turn it long term, to make Trump look like the victim.

I really doubt SCOTUS would entertain the impeachment question. I suspect they'll either say DOJ can or can't go after Trump. But it would be interesting to see how they rule.

I thought there was some momentum a few days afterwards, but once I saw Lindsey took that plane ride with Trump and emerged and started running interference for him, I knew there was no way there would be enough votes. Maybe if both he and Mitch would have spoken out in favor of impeachment, more colleagues would have followed. I'm sure Lindsey applied a lot of pressure to keep most (R) in line
