I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

They're full of crap. if the DOJ investigates, Trump will just take it to court, it will end up at SCOTUS, and what if they decide that only Impeachment is the way to punish him? Will the Senate re-vote?

It's an endless loop, and then they can try to turn it long term, to make Trump look like the victim.

Impeachment wouldn’t have anything to do with potential criminal charges. That wouldn’t be an option. All of these Republicans are saying he is no longer shielded from criminal liability now that he is no longer in office. I don’t know if any criminal charges will be filed, but I do like the idea of civil lawsuits from everyone who suffered injuries at the insurrection.

While Senate Republicans that voted to acquit Trump are deplorable, this made Democrats look weak. Not calling witnesses was a mistake. I don't care if it would've led to delays and depositions of Harris, etc. It was the right thing to do, and it would've made it even harder to acquit.

Not just that, if the DoJ did open an investigation, these same Senators would be on TV talking about how Biden's DoJ is on another "witch hunt" and how Biden is dividing the country.

That can be fixed by Republican Senators who voted to impeach along with McConnell making a formal request to the DOJ to open an investigation.

If Biden continues to remain mum on this whole thing and lets the DOJ do their thing, he doesn't have anything to worry about.

In fantasy land, it would work out like you explained, but in this world, if those R Senators that voted to impeach did call for a DoJ investigation, they would sit quiet while the Sedition Caucus attacks the investigation as a partisan hit job led by Biden and the radical, socialist Democratic Party. They would not call out their own while they continue to poison the electorate with their lies. Of this, I have no doubt.

Well, Cassidy has his badge of honor courtesy of the LA GOP...

I encourage folks especially Louisianans to send a note to both LA senators. You know Cassidy is going to be hearing it from the nutballs and he deserves some kudos from sane people. And Kennedy deserves the opposite. I sent them both a message about how honor and respect for law and order are conservative values, and that the one lifelong republican of the two senators actually exhibited them today, while the opportunistic rodeo clown did not.

They give you a list of subjects to choose from when messaging them. Cassidy got "Congratulations" and Kennedy got "Crime" from me

Looking forward to their canned responses, particularly from ol Foghorn Leghorn.

Yeah, I agree. But, I don't really see any other way Trump gets held accountable.

I agree. It doesn't matter if calling witnesses would have changed anymore minds on the Republican side. That's not the point.

The House impeachment managers said over and over that Trump's crimes were terrible and unprecedented and he had to be punished. They said January 6th, 2021 is a day that will live in infamy.

OK, if all of that is true, then they should have made their case to the fullest extent possible, instead of taking the shortcut they did today. They should have put some of those seditious racist QAnon Trump supporters on the stand for weeks and they should have had them testify against Trump. If what Trump did is so terrible, then you should humiliate him and embarrass the living hell out of him and the treasonous Republican Senators who have spent 4 years kissing his arse.

And maybe, just maybe, after a few more weeks of utter humiliation and embarrassment you get a few more Republican Senators to throw in the towel and vote guilty.

The Democrats may deeply regret this speedy trial. History has shown that coup attempts usually fail the first time, but eventually succeed.

The MAGAs are posting victory memes - it's completely lost on them how badly history is going to treat it all.

That makes me angry, but to tell you the truth I'm more sad than anything.

I'm sad that we only have one political party left in this country. I'm sad that there are very few responsible adults left in the Republican Party and that very few of them take their oath to the Constitution seriously. Personally, I think the FBI should categorize the entire Republican Party as a domestic terrorist threat, just like they do with QAnon and white supremacist groups.
