NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

No, you have not said this before. We have suspected it, but you have not said it before. Anyone who wants Trump to win doesn’t care about America, IMO.
Pretty much this. Whether it's Biden or someone else, there should be zero circumstances where Trump would be allowed back in the White House...zero.

A Gavin Newsom / Michelle Obama ticket would bring a pretty good energy to this election.

Watching Biden makes me worry if he'll make it to 85 - and if he does, what will that look like?
I lean conservative, particularly in regards to fiscal and international diplomacy, but, I'd absolutely vote for a Newsom/Obama ticket...all day long...over Trump. I mean, I'll still vote for Biden over Trump but I won't be happy about it. Newsom...I'd be much more confident in, even with his flaws, and he does have some.

Anybody who is going to wet the bed over a bad debate performance to the point that they think Biden should step aside, well, I question where their priorities are. Biden didn’t articulate things well, and he sounded awful. But he didn’t claim women are allowed by Democrats to abort babies up to 3 days after birth, like the convicted felon did. He didn’t avoid answering questions he didn’t want to answer totally bringing up stuff that wasn’t even close to the the topic he was asked. He didn’t tell lies with every breath. And not only lies, but damned lies.

The choice is still the same choice. A convicted felon, a crook who cares only about himself, who used the office of President for personal gain before and will do it again, a person whose only criteria for handling a deadly pandemic was his personal political gain (causing hundreds of thousands of needless deaths) versus an old man who implements policy well. An old man who has made good decisions about the economy, taming inflation without a recession. An old man who had a cold, and wasn’t as fast on his feet as he was during the State of the Union six months ago for whatever reason.

I doubt anyone who knows who Trump is and who Biden is will change their vote based on this. I know who these guys are. There is only one sane choice.
The problem with saying that people are wetting the bed after such a poor performance is that Trump already had a slight lead, and this will probably expand that lead. People that say that others have had bad performances, therefore believe it doesn't matter, ignore the entrenched beliefs that people already had. When Obama had a bad performance in the 1st debate against Romney, no one doubted Obama bouncing back, and no one doubted that Obama could be just as good in a 2nd term. No one had an entrenched belief that Obama couldn't handle the forthcoming job. I heard the same thing about Fetterman, but people gave him the benefit of the doubt that he would get better after his stroke. Few think Biden is going to get better, and few think he'll be as capable in the 2nd term, so pointing to his accomplishments in the 1st term doesn't help Biden as much as it helps most presidents.

I think a majority of voters think Trump would be bad for the country, and many think he is literally dangerous for our future, yet he is still leading. It doesn't matter how much Trump lies to a majority of voters. Biden could've literally been totally honest yesterday, and Trump could've literally said nothing but lies (which is almost what happened), yet it wouldn't sway a majority of voters. Biden repeatedly didn't use all of his time to correct Trump's lies. Biden didn't highlight the dangerous plans that Trump has. Biden had trouble finding words. He lost his train of thought from the beginning, which set the tone for the rest of the debate. The post-debate fact checks from the media are not going to have any affect, because voters will be in their echo chambers.

Despite the huge advantages that Biden has with abortion on the ballot, the convicted low-life he is facing, and the blatant dangerous plans of his opponent, at this point, I think Biden is going to lose. I think Biden will lose the undecided voters.

Almost any Democrat would probably be leading. Despite Kamala's supposed unpopularity, I think she has a better chance to beat Trump. Kamala would eat Trump alive in the next debate, and Newsome will destroy anyone Trump puts forth. I've heard suggestions that Biden should start holding many press conferences and interviews, including with hostile interviewers. It is the the best idea I've heard to helping change minds, but this debate was very widely viewed, and future press conferences and interviews are probably not going to get before many of the eyes of undecided voters. I think Biden should announce that he is stepping down, and that Kamala is going to lead the ticket, and then Kamala should ask Gavin Newsome to be her running mate.

All due respect to him, one isn't like the other. This isn't for a Congressional seat. This is for the White House.
Exactly! Not only is the position of the president orders of magnitude more important, but also orders of magnitude more demanding than being a congressman. Also, Fetterman's constituents obviously gave him the benefit of the doubt that he would recover from his stroke, since he seemed to be getting better. I don't think Biden is getting the benefit of the doubt that he will get better.

I have no idea what people are arguing about this for. Biden's words, his demeanor, and his wit were all worrying. He looked every bit of 81. I have no idea why he ran again.

If he is truly up to the task, then he needs to start giving interviews, esp a few hostile ones. He won't because he can't.

Obama, Clinton, and the major powerbrokers of the party need to figure out a way to replace him at the top of the ticket.

Isn’t he not getting the benefit of the doubt because the concern is his (Biden) age, and you can’t recover from getting old.
