“All United States Marshals Service arrestees have public records of arrest documenting their charges. Our agency did not arrest or detain Mark James Pettibone.”

OPB sent DHS an extensive list of questions about Pettibone’s arrest including: What is the legal justification for making arrests away from federal property? What is the legal justification for searching people who are not participating in criminal activity? Why are federal officers using civilian vehicles and taking people away in them? Are the arrests federal officers make legal under the constitution? If so, how?

After 7 p.m. Thursday, a DHS spokesperson responded, on background, that they could confirm Wolf was in Portland during the day. The spokesperson didn’t acknowledge the remaining questions.

This story is very troublesome.

I was talking about the George Floyd incident itself.

It is interesting that Minnesota Republicans are wanting a federal takeover of the investigation in the police department as a whole - is there some reason to distrust state government?
I have no idea....( regarding State govt) but if they are calling for it and their calls have yet to be answered.....

there is no current investigation by the feds other than the Floyd incident. The dept as a whole is not being investigated by the Feds.

You asked what can a President do to reform local police ( aka the department )

I countered with " initiate a federal investigation akin to NOPD/federal consent decree "

you replied - "they are" ( they being the Feds )

And now we are here - you were speaking in terms of the Floyd incident.

You didnt say policeMEN - you said police ( as in department )

You said "they are" ( in context of what can feds do? investigate ) as in Feds are investigating the dept.

When in fact, they are not.

Are you still wondering what POTUS can do?

I understand what you are saying but the problem is that teh context of a demonstration where there are a few bad apples vs. a kid tagging a bridge is really different.
But even using that example you are seeing criminal justice experts talking abut an increase in crime in a lot of cities being tied, in part, to police avoiding sort of "overpolicing." So instead of arresting/citing the tagger, the police ignore it which eventually leads to an escalation of crime.
I don't like the idea of tear-gassing a crowd because a few bozos shot off fireworks into a building or threw rocks - but ignoring it in-and-of itself can contribute to escalation.
I agree... but I think we both agree that there's a pretty decent spectrum between doing nothing and being too aggressive.

I'm hopeful that this is a sorting out process of reassessing how we want things done, and hopefully rebuild trust in our public institutions.

I think a lot of the protests are driven by a deep seated belief that policing, use of force escalations, detentions, convictions and sentencing is not applied in an even and equitable manner. I think there is a lot of evidence to support that view. I think it's perfectly appropriate to take a step back and reassess how we are handling criminal justice in this country and to determine if there's a better way, and then get buy in from all constituencies on it.

When trust in public institutions breaks down, you don't rebuild that trust through more force, you have to work extra hard, bring in stakeholders to work with you and take a lot of time to rebuild it.

Anyone think it's a coincidence he's sending jump out boys to three states he really needs to win? I think the more violence and chaos he can cause with this the more he can blame the socialists (democrats) running these three cities for it and use it to imply Biden would do the same but to the entire country. He's already laid the groundwork for that strategy with his stupid and nearly unwatchable television ads. And he just pulled his advertising from MI too.

I think it's fairly obvious that that's what's occurring... like the Biden – Ukraine situation, law and order is the cover but not the real story.

Are they doing this in cooperation with local authorities? If so, they'll be more successful

I understand your point. You want the President to personally order an investigation into the police department of a Democratically controlled city a Democratically controlled state. Which is something Republicans are very supportive of - given your link.

I understand the President can do that. But I do not think it is a particularly prudent move - rather, I think the normal DOJ procedure should be followed to determine if an investigation is warranted.

I'm just really sick of all of it when it comes to him. It's been a really long 3 years and 7 months and I'm getting worn down. Every single thing he does is with the intention of causing division.

what is stopping him from announcing that he is asking the DOJ to begin an investigation?

The needed to let people be angry. Once things were calming Trump went in for law and order photos. It is backfiring as it always does. What was a black lives matter protest has turned into a pro-democracy free speech protest. Lori Lightfoot stopped it. She said OK send your paultry 200 agents, we will add them to our 12,500 CO-ORDINATED (no military occupation), then she pulled the statues down before he could turn them into "statue protectors".

No doubt. I get on my FB page once a day or so and it's just full of lunacy. It's insane. 500 nonsense posts about BLM, hydrocholoroquine, and insane conspiracy theories. The liberals and moderates have just about given up even commenting on any of the crazy crap and it's like a little self-confirming pity party on the right.

Boycott the NFL
Buy beans from whatever that place was
Boycott MLB - let's watch little league
send kids back to school now - they're missing free lunch and will die if they don't go back
Confiscate Soros
Declare BLM a terrorist org

And, of course, Trump's ongoing attempt to cheat the election process in order to fulfill the needs of his disease

I have no idea how that got in the post, but the place is pretty good.

Risotto is tough to make for a big crowd so someone would have to stand near by and be a good beer caddy.
I'll bring my mask...
