Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Either I don’t understand your question or you are not asking the right question. Public schools are at a disadvantage because they have to spend money and resources on those additional requirements while private schools don’t have to.
My question was are those the things that make public schools better?
Are they necessary to educate kids?
Are they cost-effective?
Have they improved education?
If not, why do them?

IEP (special education), free/reduced lunch, transportation (school bus) are necessary that public schools are required to provide but private don’t.
I don’t really care for state standardized test requirement but that is how passing and failing public schools are determined.

All well and good, but does any of it contribute to more learning that can be quantified?
And non-profit private schools can also and do offer free school lunches.

I have never heard of non-profit private schools at least in Louisiana. Those schools do charge tuition right?
Yes they all contribute but the issue is not if they contribute or not.
To be on an even level playing field with the same amount of funding, either public schools would need to stop providing those services or private schools need to start providing them.

I think you’ll find that the vast majority of private schools nationwide, including Louisiana, are 501(c)(3) non profits.

Catholic schools are non-profit. Most charge tuition to cover expenses.

Why must they be on level playing fields if they aren't receiving the same funding? Remember that private schools will have to pay their own expenses like supplies, utilities, rent and teacher, custodial, lunchroom and administrator salaries. There will not be public bonds sold to support private schools.

Thanks. I have two kids. One attends private school and one attends public school since they start school and I don’t know of any catholic schools offer free/reduced lunch around here.

With universal school choice, they are receiving the same funding.

Not true. It will be per student, and private schools will be paying for all the things the school district would be paying for. The economy of scale comes into effect also, as the districts will have more purchasing power and be able to stretch their dollars farther than private schools.

Elon Musk has been branded a “national security risk” by a former U.S. army general, who cited his concerns over the tech billionaire’s close ties with the Chinese government.

Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré, who retired in 2008, highlighted Musk’s history of appeasing and praising the Chinese Communist Party and his multiple business deals with the party, particularly in the modern space race.

In a scathing op-ed, published in The New York Times, Honoré noted that Musk and his company SpaceX already face federal reviews for failing to provide details of meetings with foreign leaders, but said that such infractions were “just the beginning of my worries.”

Musk has previously borrowed at least $1.4 billion from banks controlled by the Chinese government to help build a “gigafactory” in Shanghai for Tesla. The factory was responsible for more than half of Tesla’s global deliveries in the third quarter of 2024.……

I rank this right up there with the 51 former "intelligence" officers who decided Hunter's laptop story sounded like a Russian ploy.

The states are responsible for their special education programs and some states are much better at it than others. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are notariously bad while Massachusetts, Minnesota, and those states in the North and North East are really good. States with better education systems are also better at running their special education programs.
Anecdotally, I personally know 3 families that relocated from the south to the northeast because of their special education programs.

Curiously enough, my next door neighbor in MD was a orthodox Jew, we got along well, I can't say he wasn't a good neighbor BUT the guy was MAGA to the core......we never spoke politics, probably why we remained good neighbors....

Most ironically, he had a kid (great kid) with special needs and would comment on how great the MD public school (MD is very blue, and very....taxing, which is why the schools system is far superior to the likes of LA, AL, and other red states) was that she went to......while completely ignoring the fact that his political heroes wouldn't give a shart about his kid.....

That sort of cognitive dissonance is infuriating.

I support Israel hands-down, and I will say I’m very impressed as usual they don’t take shirt. I don’t give a shirt about anybody that aligns with terrorists. Palestinians voted them in decades ago to “lead” and this is what they have now. Everyone for decades has known what Hamas is. Their father and grandfather voted them Into power for the Palestinians and now they’re reaping the repercussions of that, it’s very sad. But you know what I don’t give a shirt about any idiot that doesn’t care about Hamas requiring their women and children to wear a forking bombs to blow up a bus with children or hides in hospitals behind children. Do you realize that the UN had to admit some of their people were involved in this. I didn’t vote for Trump this time, but I will say the UN is a joke and I hope he pulls out of it. Then they will be bankrupt. Do you get it?

And do you get that you are dumping on the very organization that created the Israeli state? If it weren't for the UN, Israel would just be a dream of a place that was lost thousands of years ago.

Dumbass, The US created the UN and Israel with our money just like we won two world wars for the Europeans with American soldiers blood. Stop being a dumbass! Do you wanna keep playing and pretend like a typical liberal that humans are not the main cause of the decimation of this planet and it’s other species cause I can prove it time and again.

And I'm the dumass??? Why resort to name calling instead of educating yourself?

You are hilarious. We freed Europe twice with American blood. We created the UN, I support Israel and UN “leaders” already admitted some of their members were involved in the attack on Israel. UN is a joke now that is fact they’ve been for a long time I have another article I can give you to prove my point from the beginning Congo. From the National Geographic magazine number of years ago. Do you wanna keep playing dumbass!
