Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

The funny thing is Musk is absolutely right there. Americans and Republicans in particular don't encourage their children to pursue careers in professional fields any longer. In fact, their antagonism and distrust of college, science and professionalism push their children to openly reject those fields.

I see this every day in my field of engineering. Almost every new engineering we've hired in the past 10 years at our firm has been Southeast Asian/Indian Immigrants with H1-B vises. We can't find native born Americans. Before the last 10 years being in Texas, most of our new engineering were Hispanic/white.

American youth would rather pursue careers in useless/non productive fields like influences or podcaster. And when they can't make money doing that, they have no useful knowledge to pursue a career that can actually make them money and provide a stable living. It's really sad.

If hardline Republicans get their way and shutdown H1-B vises, they will hollow out the professional core of this country that is necessary for innovation and growth and the results will be self-destructive for our country. China wouldn't have to fire a shot, Republicans will have done that all on their own.

I mean it depends on the field. SDE's were at a peak during covid, but FAANG has layed off 10,000's since then. That field has plenty of talent.

H1B's in general are good for the USA. It's essentially "brain drain"ing other countries. I would change it to a 3 year visa, and not employer based, so immigrants can change jobs easier.

Trump siding with Musk is the least surprising thing ever. His entire life he’s been courting favor with people who have more money and power than he does.

He couldn’t wait to get out of Queens, where his dad made some very serious money which set him up for life, to try to play with the big boys in Manhattan. The fact that he’s an abject failure at hanging with them and couldn’t cut it haunts him to this day.
