Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Okay so, the whole “free speech absolutist” turns out - in fairly short order - to be an absolute fraud, as expected.

But the sudden break between “tech MAGA” and “original MAGA” has been pretty funny. And during the whole thing Elon basically admitted to work visa fraud.

Actually not shocking. More than a handful of people have stated this was Musk's goal all along. Just that the mask is pretty much completely off now. This is who Musk is.

If only Musk had donated millions to Harris, eh?

Huh? I'm not sure what the point is here...

Elon backed Trump because he became consumed with the culture wars. He never had an interest in free speech absolutism. The H1B visa expansion he likely could have gotten with money applied across the spectrum in a lot of places... there's enough of a coalition of Democrats and Republicans who would support it.

He would never have backed Harris and it would not be due to her policies.

The check is supposed to mean you aren’t misleading nor deceptive. That is a joke, since X has allowed the nation’s liar and chief back on the platform, and Musk has curated a platform of liars, so the check is meaningless. No one who cares about honesty should ever use X. I use Threads instead, and am interested in Bluesky too.

On twitter the check simply meant that the account is verified - it’s authentic as to who the owner says it is. But Musk viewed it as some sort of badge of honor. So now he’s granting it and taking it away as some kind of reward/punishment.

Yes, that’s what it used to mean, which is consistent with not being misleading, and indicative of not being deceptive of your identity. It only meant it was the actual person implied by the name that was posting, because Elon doesn’t care if you are a deceptive person, as long as it is the actual person named by the account. It has lost that meaning. Today the check only means you haven’t said anything that Musk disagrees with. It’s a perfect platform for an authoritarian.

If this is your roundabout way of saying Musk is a racist, why purseyfoot around it?

Elon Musk, as the founder and leader of Tesla, has faced criticism for the company’s handling of racism and discrimination in the workplace. Tesla has been the subject of numerous lawsuits and allegations, including claims of a racially hostile work environment, particularly at its Fremont, California, factory. Critics argue that as the CEO and a hands-on leader, Musk had the responsibility to address these issues but failed to implement meaningful changes to improve the workplace culture.

This pattern raises questions about accountability and leadership, especially in a company that promotes itself as forward-thinking and innovative.

So no it is not a roundabout way of saying that Musk is a racist, but the facts that he allowed rascism to thrive in an organization that he is a very much hands-on leader off could indicate that he supported these actions.

He's a rich white guy from South Africa - of course he's a racist

He and his family actively supported Apartheid.

Quick tip for slow people (read: Texans) - When you look up that word make sure you remember the 'h' and the 'e' and 'i' are switched.

Of course you all will just take my word for it because you are too lazy. Texas is the laziest state in the union. Nobody can out dumb or out lazy a Texan.

There was no point. He knows what Eloon did. He just doesn’t give a schlitz.

It could indicate what you suggest.
It could also mean he may not have had much personal hands on running his factory.

We are eternally grateful here that you live elsewhere.
    Thanks!

I don’t think you people get it. Trump will never dance for anyone. Don’t get me wrong Elon is full of himself and he probably should be as the likely richest person in the world. He didn’t get there by accident this bullshirt about Trump bowing to Elon is a joke from the left. If you haven’t figured it out yet Trump doesn’t bow to anyone. That is why Biden and Kamala are out of jobs very soon. I didn’t vote for Trump and I didn’t vote for Kamala.
