Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

If it's so good, why is Twitter all "top-down" and I can't get a message to anyone in control? Free speech is from "bottom-up." I'm confused.

Is anyone that matters going actually say anything about the fact that Elon Musk is a ketamine addict who goes on K-binges?

He's actually fairly transparent about it . . . only he alleges that he uses it in accordance with a prescription for depression. But more than a few people who know him allege that he "snorts ketamine and tweets for hours" - and he has been observed in marathon gaming sessions, talking along the way.

This is not the conduct of a properly-managed clinical ketamine prescription for depression. The dosage is supposed to regulate the patient's symptoms, not provide a basis for a manic high. This person is now in a very influential position, in the United States and elsewhere. And he's clearly a binging ketamine addict.

Can you OD on Ketamine? I have no idea how it's used or its effects.

Maybe we just watch and see what happens. If he needs help and doesn't get it, it's not because of a lack of resources.

Ketamine had been used as a veterinary tranquilizer/anesthetic for a long time, and people began to abuse it as a party drug - in powder form it can be snorted and in quantity causes powerful dissociative and hallucinatory effects. I think it's supposedly sort of somewhere between LSD and MDMA but more numbing - I never used it but have friends that did. The first I heard of it was in the mid-90s.

And as far as I know, it continued to be used that way: as an illegal party drug. But then more recently, like last 10 years, you started to hear about it being used as an anti-depressant or clinical treatment for those dealing with various traumas. Apparently research found ketamine (in very controlled doses) to be effective in ways that more traditional pharmaceutical treatments were not. The FDA, however, has still never approved this use. So it's one of these things where small controlled doses can be part of a medically-prescribed treatment, but the drug itself is still used in larger doses to get high. It is a Schedule III non-narcotic.

As far as OD goes, I don't think I have ever heard of a ketamine overdose purely on the drug itself, and the FDA literature says that adverse effects (dangerous blood pressure) can be observed but I would imagine that takes a large quantity or high level chronic use - but abusing it can become dangerous in other ways that lead to death. This is what happened to Matthew Perry, he was supposedly taking large doses of ketamine, well beyond a clinical use and it led to him losing consciousness in a hot tub, where he then drowned.

It's a tranquilizer so of course it can kill you. But only if you abuse it in huge quantities.

However, its use is really helping those with early childhood trauma and PTSD work through their trauma.

I am familiar with this as Oregon allows for ketamine treatments and I personally know people who use them. It is administered at a clinic at a scheduled appointment. It is given by a licensed physician who has additional licensing for the ketamine (and usually psilocybin).

It is given intravenously and, after the session, they have an antidote that they introduce slowly to bring the person back down. It is "guided" with sound and light healing.

I have used ketamine - only in the way Chuck described. It in some ways feels like tripping acid but your mobility is really impaired. I felt like I was falling into the couch for what seemed like hours. Hallucinations were just a powerful and the ego breakdown was prevalent. I just couldn't move.

One very important tip - don't let your butt crevasse roommates talk you into gambling while on ketamine.

Given your experience and explanation above, can you explain how a k-binge makes you go on manic episodes where you tweet and game for hours on end? It seems it would produce the exact opposite of what Musk is using it for.

No idea- I could barely move.

I did a bit of digging and I found a study showing there is a possible correlation between heavy ketamine use and manic episodes. Seems to fit the narrative here.
