Everything I've seen and heard says that the split second Donald Trump is no longer president there will be flood of charges waiting for him

And if he resigns and Pence pardons him there are a ton of state charges as an understudy waiting in the wings if the fed charges can't perform

What do you think the likelihood of there being a jail sentence?

    In every movie and TV show I've ever seen, in every political thriller I've ever read about a criminal and corrupt president there is ALWAYS some version of;

"We can't do that to the country",

"A trial would tear the country apart",

"For the nation to heal we need to move on" etc.

    Would life imitate art?

Even with the charges, even with the proof the charges are true will the powers that be decide, "we can't do that to the country"?

I think the idea of a former President in prison, especially one with the support of 70 million Americans, is awful. We can't go that route because half of this country would never believe any evidence presented against him.

So there will be some negotiated settlements and any criminal stuff will be buried or ignored. There's going to be a lot of leaks and I think IG's will dig into a lot of shady stuff. I do think we will end up with some kind of report on all the Trump Administration nonsense in an attempt to peel off some of his support so he can't be as disruptive a force in American politics moving forward.

Now, I do think we will see indictments at some point for some people in his Administration.

Yeah, he probably deserves jail time, but I'm just not seeing it happen. That said, I'm not sure he'll ever agree to a settlement that handcuffs his ability to remain a force in media, let alone running again for President. So much of his identity is wrapped up in that, and he's not going to give that up under any circumstances. I really think he'd rather go to jail than lose his media access. And he certainly would use it to make himself look like a martyr for the cause of Trumpism. A disturbingly large number of people would totally embrace that and he'd be the modern day Jesus to those people.

That said, he hasn't gotten to that point. So we'll have to wait and see what he does. Ball is in court imo.

Personally after everything that has happened I don’t want him to get any special treatment. If it leads to jail then so be it. I wouldn’t want to see any deals made.

    i could see this
slap on the wrist for him and hard time for the next 20 under him (including the 3 kids)

I understand this feeling but my thoughts on it are we keep saying that "No one is above the law" Letting Trump skate flies in the face of that and sets a bad precedent

Instead of "Too big to fail" it's "Too big to prosecute"

Charge him and try him, if a jury finds him not guilty then so be it but I believe the process must move forward

I see where you're coming from, but I tend to take the "good of the country" approach. That was the calculation with Nixon. He was clearly guilty, but it was determined that it was for the good of the country to not prosecute him (via pardon) because it would have done irreparable damage.

Does anyone want Trump in jail enough to see open violence and dead bodies in the streets? To see a potentially irreparable division in the country? To allow every tinpot dictator around the globe to say we're no better than them? To permanently destroy a belief in our countries institutions from half the populace?

Because that's what's at the end of that road. It's not worth it to me.

Yes it's worth the risk. Otherwise you're allowing leaders to be above the law. There must be consequences for future leaders to see, and those should be the same for everyone.

You mean you're willing to risk a civil war just to see Trump held to account? Not saying he shouldn't be held to account, but sometimes we have to decide what is worth risking for this. Because that's very possible in this situation.

This is just a random comment i came across on a random website- so I’m not posting it as truth.. but does anyone think there might be a kernel of truth here, and and might Help explain the firing of Esper today?

There might be a kernel of truth in that Trump could possibly think up a scenario like that. But that's about it. The military would not do this, period. And it's a well known fact that Esper and Trump have not seen eye to eye lately. Esper is not and never has been a yes man, which is precisely why Trump was irritated with him. His firing was a long time coming. I had forgotten about their differences, but I refreshed my memory today and this has absolutely nothing to do with that conspiracy theory.

There wouldn't be a civil war. That's just ridiculous and I can't even imagine such a thing. Nobody should be above the law, so yes I do think he should be prosecuted for crimes.

I think a civil war is a stretch, but I do think there would be violent clashes in the street that will go on for some time (I'm still not convinced we won't get there just with the election).

That's going to lead to people dead in the street and for what? Cheating on his taxes? Campaign finance violations? Obstruction of justice?

None of that cost lives. Fine the ever-loving hell out of him, shame him and move on. I don't want to see anyone die over any of that.

Yes. If it takes some bloodshed to rid this nation of the corruption and craziness we see now, I suppose I do.

It's not going to be a civil war unless his insane clown posse starts shooting people and if they do then so be it. Let law enforcement deal with it. If that's not enough then whatever it takes.

I don't want it. I don't think it will happen, but there are a whole bunch of crazy idiots advocating for it because they actually believe Trump is protecting us from blood drinking pedophiles.

Some of those people may not be fixable.

I agree a civil war is a stretch. There are people who actually are hoping that happens. They're certifiably nuts though.

That said, I find it easy to believe there would be dead bodies in streets in more than a few areas. It's already happened in the wake of the riots. It would be worse this time around imo.

Oh no doubt, you can't take the crazy out of those nuts. I just think it's worth counting the cost before going through with something that could end up being a powder keg.

Well, I am tired of crazy. We need a good healthy cleanse.

so basically allow a criminal to go free because he has a following that threaten civil war there by rendering the fundamental principles of the constitution null and void....? That's not what people who have died fighting for this country have given their lives for. If we are faced with a second civil war to protect and maintain the principles enshrined in the constitution, then we shall fight that war because not doing so means the constitution isn't worth the paper it was written on. This country does not give in to the demands of enemies of the constitution.
