Frankly, I'm completely ignorant when it comes to the Critical Race Theory curriculum. What is it, where does it come from, and is it legitimate? Has anyone here read it and maybe give a quick summary?

If this has been covered in another thread, then I missed it.

Yeah, they’re not stupid, Cruz and Carlson, one would imagine. So why do they push stupid, reflexively reductive nonsense? That is a good question.

this could have gone in a number of threads

I've known about redlining for a long time but just read about the highways about a year or so ago
    =============================

Another day, another manufactured right-wing outrage about America’s history of systemic racism. On Monday, White House correspondent for The Grio April Ryan asked Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg how the infrastructure bill will “deconstruct the racism that was built into the roadways.” Secretary Buttigieg, who has talked about this issue before, delivered a response that would set right-wing Twitter on fire with white-hot rage.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) sarcastically tweeted, “The roads are racist. We must get rid of roads.” Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, who has himself sparked backlash over the past year for echoing the white supremacist Great Replacement theory, tweeted a video segment mocking Secretary Buttigieg’s remarks, adding: “Inanimate objects, like roads, can’t be racist. That seems obvious, though apparently Pete Buttigieg doesn’t know this.”

Actually, Buttigieg does know this, and so does everyone else who has rightfully pointed out the history of systemic racism in America’s infrastructure. It’s a typical strategy of right-wing figures to drastically underestimate the intelligence of their base and push the most simple-minded explanation of a given topic. Obviously, inanimate objects like roads can’t be racist, but the intent and strategy that goes into how some roads are constructed can be, and were, absolutely racist..........

Not only was Buttigieg’s anecdote backed by evidence, but the extent of this problem also goes far beyond Robert Moses. The issue of systemic racism in America’s highways is well-known. Deborah N. Archer, a professor at the NYU School of Law, has written extensively about this issue.

In a lengthy paper outlining how racial equity can be advanced through highway reconstruction, Professor Archer delivered an in-depth look at how many highways across the country were built with racist intent, writing: “In states around the country, highway construction displaced Black households and cut the heart and soul out of thriving Black communities as homes, churches, schools, and businesses were destroyed.

In other communities, the highway system was a tool of a segregationist agenda, erecting a wall that separated white and Black communities and protected white people from Black migration.”........

How is all that relevant, and how can infrastructure have racist impacts? These racist practices impacted where Black people lived, where they were able to work, the way they commuted to work, the accessibility of services, where they were able to shop, how they could travel, and the overall quality of their lives. “I’m still surprised that some people were surprised when I pointed to the fact that if a highway was built for the purpose of dividing a white and a Black neighborhood, or if an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly Black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach — or that would have been — in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices,” Secretary Buttigieg said........

The Claiborne flyover section of I-10 is an example of this. It ruined Treme by cutting it off from the French Quarter side of the interstate and made that whole stretch of Claiborne completely unappealing to any business investments that can make a real difference in the neighborhood.

Because they appeal to the lowest common denominator in the Trump Party knowing it's the only way to maintain power/relevance in today's GOP.

Christopher Rufo has been quoted in this thread. He is the architect of the CRT propaganda. He has been personally responsible for a whole lot of disinformation that feeds the “outrage porn” that is consumed by the far right. He has bragged about “rebranding” CRT to mean something that it is not. This is a thread, with examples and proof, that highlights his complete lack of integrity.

    This is a better article.

Are we still defending the hill that CRT/Racial essentialism is not being taught in grad and high schools?

    yes

Now are there things being taught that might be included in CRT? of course

People will say a history lesson about Jim Crow laws is CRT, that doesn't mean we should stop teaching about it.

I have not heard anyone besides those on the left say that anyone thinks Jim Crow should not be taught in school. That is history, that should be taught.
What is drawing the ire of parents of all color is that along with actual history, they are also being taught that certain races are still the oppressor and others the victim and the child, depending on the color, had and still has a role to play in that.

If CRT is not being taught and is not really important, then why is the left so adamant about defending it?

    Who's defending it?

    Who's "the left"?

There are a ton of people on both sides that argue about things they barely understand. I think the people most interested in the CRT fight are likely ignorant.

Schools should teach about racism, including the fact that white people have abused power in the US to maintain racial supremacy. Do you agree with that?

During the 60s? Sure. The problem is they need a modern boogeyman and systemic racism is all they have so they have to invent, magnify, lie and misinform to prove it.
I also think it is racist to teach that white people are the problem in today society. By attempting to the 'right' thing in a very misguided way, they are placing rocks around the necks of all the kids in the this society. Racism is racism.

Now we have students being suspended because they believe that there are two genders and the school system can't have gender 'confusion' or personal beliefs unless they are approved by the school board. This is where you finally have parents pushing back and hopefully putting a stop to this. This is done generations too late and the right was too stupid and stubborn to fight back and because of that, the 'progressives' have gained power in every single intuition of this country....minus local police departments... for now.

If this story is indeed accurate, it more than likely is, do you support the suspension of a student due to misuse of gender pronouns?

You are just hyper defensive about the idea of kids being taught about racism an it’s scope and impact.

For example, the existence of white privilege and it making your life easier doesn’t mean you are a racist. Refusing to acknowledge that fact would mean you are part of the problem though.

No one is putting rocks around your neck, that is a burden you are putting on yourself.

the problem is now, If you teach stuff like Jim Crow and all those types of stuff was racist laws by white people to oppress minorities, now the right gets all their panties in a bunch because IT MUST BE CRT..
The right has gone more crazy over teaching about rascism in history than the left is over teaching CRT.

I'm still waiting for literally anything proving it was taught or even really known about before this thread appeared.

It sounds like you’re saying that any racism today (if it still even exists) has no effect on the lives of POC today. Is that accurate?
