It's a sad state of affairs when your party doesn't care about an assassination attempt on a former president. Hard to care about Hitler almost getting assassinated amirite?

I don’t think it’s a party thing. I just don’t think a lot of people outside of MAGA care about it, outside of gaining clarity on the facts, compared to other considerations. It’s been weird because in the past, an attempted assassination would have brought people together. I just don’t see signs of that. It was big news for a cycle but there doesn’t seem to be a lingering focus outside of Trumpsphere.

    More on the Senate investigation

Sen. Ron Johnson and his staff have written an initial report from his bipartisan investigation informed by whistleblowers who have talked to his office. I’ve obtained the 13-page executive summary of it.
Some of this Sen. Johnson discussed with Fox News Morning with Maria this morning -- but here are all the details and the report itself.

    Key findings:
1.) Secret Service did not attend a security briefing provided to local special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and sniper teams the morning of July 13, 2024. Why not?

--There was a 9 a.m. briefing on July 13, 2024, Butler County Emergency Services (Butler ESU) provided a security briefing for the local SWAT teams and snipers assigned to the rally. In addition to Butler County, local SWAT teams and snipers from Washington County and Beaver County were also tasked with security responsibilities.

    2. Local law enforcement said communications were siloed and they were not in frequent radio contact directly with Secret Service.

    3. Local law enforcement notified command about Crooks prior to the shooting and received confirmation that Secret Service was aware of the notification.

    4. Following the shooting Secret Service was seen on the roof of the AGR building with local law enforcement; photos of the shooter were sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for facial recognition.

5.) Secret Service was initially not going to send snipers to the rally, according to local law
    enforcement.

The screenshots of subsequent pages of the report will continue in linked tweets.

    More on Johnson's investigation

"At approximately 6:23pm on July 13, 2024—twelve minutes after former President Trump was shot—two Beaver County, PA law enforcement agents accessed the roof of the American Glass Research (AGR) building and saw Crooks, deceased. During a subsequent
search of Crooks, local law enforcement discovered a suspected remote triggering device. At 6:32pm, 7:45pm, and 7:46pm, the Beaver County law enforcement agents took pictures of Crooks, a cellphone and the remote control device near the suspected shooter’s body."

There have been reports that explosives were found in his car. Now we now he had a remote triggering device, not in the car, but on his person.

Unbelievable that Trump's head turn is all that saved him and very tragic that Corey Comperatore lost his life, but this could have been a lot worse. The Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers on the ground deserve credit for saving lives -- but not those agents and managers in charge of planning security at the 7/13 rally and any superior who signed off on it. They need to have a reckoning re: leaving that building without anyone on top of it or at very least a big sign blocking the line of sight to former President Trump and the crowd.

I'm way behind in this thread so sorry if alread posted
    ======================================

Soon after a Secret Service sniper killed the man who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump, officers grabbed the AR-style weapon by the shooter’s body and started to record its make, model and any other details they could glean.

The young man carried no ID. If the gun was purchased legally from a licensed dealer, law enforcement officials hoped to use the serial number etched onto the side of the weapon to figure out who he was.

They were able to do so in about 30 minutes, federal law enforcement officials said in a statement. The search used sale records from an out-of-business gun store that the government is required to collect — but that Republican lawmakers and the gun lobby would like to place off-limits.

The attempted assassination of a former president and current White House contender gave the public a glimpse into “the time pressure that law enforcement, the ATF agents and our local police partners are under to solve these cases and advance the investigation,” said Steven Dettelbach, director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “Having the ability to search the records is absolutely a big part” of that work.

The federal government is prohibited from compiling a national database of gun owners. Those who oppose allowing the government to collect records from shuttered gun shops said they are equivalent to such a database, which they believe could be used to track and punish law-abiding gun owners, even though the records cannot be searched by a person’s name.
ATF, which is responsible for regulating sales and licensing of firearms, is allowed to keep sale records only from gun stores that have closed. The nation’s 80,000 or so operating licensed gun dealers are required to maintain their own records, with law enforcement agencies contacting the shops directly if they need to identify the buyer of a weapon used in a crime.

“They could make a door-to-door confiscation list with these out-of-business records, and that’s a huge threat to the Second Amendment,” said Aidan Johnston, director of federal affairs at Gun Owners of America, which has backed legislation that would destroy the types of records that ATF relied on to trace the firearm to the Trump rally shooter............

Good lord, Gym Jordan keeps proving how much of a dick he is every time he grandstands in these hearings.
Sadly, he is from my state. A complete blithering idiot that has yet to reply to a congressional subpoena.

This is actually a pretty good hearing. It’s partisan, but it’s good on that both sides are really showing their arses.

Stuart Knight (USSS Director during Raegan assassination attempt) has been brought up, and Cheadle clearly feels like she shouldn’t do what he did (resign).

Knight didnt resign after Regan ( its Regan not Raegan ) - he retired in Dec 1981 ( March 1981 was attempt on Regan ) after 9 years as Director ( 2 more as Asst Director prior )
Nor did he resign after 2 attempts on Gerald Ford in the 70s - also when he was Director of USSS

yall gotta do better vetting info. Its not hard and takes 5 min

We are talking about Ronald Reagan. We both misspelled his name. Congrats for pointing that out 👍🏼.

    He stepped down in 1981.

Knight didn't resign as a tesult of the assassination attempt. Whoever said that was wrong.

I see that we are all having spelling problems this morning. Lol

Per the article shared (UPI article from 1981) he (Knight) stepped down as director of the USSS.

    From the article.

Knight said he is voluntarily stepping down to take an assignment for the Justice Department to look at border management in conjunction with the federal Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Customs Service.

stepping down to pursue private employment after spending 11 years w/SS isnt "resigning due to it being his fault" narrative.

If that were the case, why stay on as Director after 2 failed attempts on President Ford?

Point being, he continued to serve as Director a full 9 mo AFTER the attempt on Reagan and several years post Ford.

Gotta do better than listen to partisan bickering - thats my point. If he fully felt responsible for Reagan, why wait 9 months?

Furthermore, he even explained that it was getting much harder to "protect" due to the nature of politicians and wanting to be "out among" folks.
