I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

My uncle died of COVID-19 in New Orleans this morning. He most likely got it during Mardi Gras. It kinda makes it real when it hits this close to home. He was 77 and had diabetes but other than that, he was still pretty active.
Condolences to you and your family on your loss.

I am not denying any of that. I am saying that he gave a very different impression than the reality of the situation. The woman in Arizona even said that they heard it mentioned on TV.

Given that it has not been approved for use in treating COVID-19, do you not find it irresponsible for the president to discuss it on national TV, especially since you say that he had to be corrected after the fact?

Hell no it wasn't irresponsible for Trump to discuss how a medicine that has been around for 65 years, is very cheap and is already in the system might be one of the keys in combating the virus.

I don't know how medically accurate it is, but we also have FloridaMan who says that he requested that his doctor prescribe the drug and once he was given the drug he recovered.

We shouldn't have to dumb down what the public is told to the extent you are suggesting.

No one has suggested that anyone self medicate with prescription drugs.

I think it is understood that there will be learned intermediaries between the President and the patients. Specifically, medical doctors are anticipated to be involved in direct treatment.

This is another example of the growing divide in this country. If it wasn't for your hate og Trump clouding your thoughts we would not have several people trying to explain what we know you should already appreciate.

I posted the clips of Trump talking about it. The impression that he gave doesn't sound at all like what you or what many in the media was claiming. He wasn't definitive at all. The woman in Arizona heard him mention the malaria drug and then they proceeded to drink fish tank cleaner. It's so ridiculous to try to claim that Trump has an culpability for that.

So we have a pandemic that we've never experienced in our lifetimes. People are out of work, out of money, worried about loved ones, worried about paying their bills, stressed out and depressed. They find an old medication that has shown promise in the intial testing for Covid 19. Finally we get something positive to give us a glimmer of hope and you think he shouldn't have even mentioned it?

Ammonia can be used to revive someone who is unconscious . . . of course, you have to have the good sense not to pour it down their throat . . .

He was admitted 4 days ago. With pollen season in full swing in the New Orleans area, he thought he was just having allergy issues. It wasn't until his wife found him struggling to breath one morning that they took him in.

yeah its been brutal this year ( pollen ) and i posted on the Dealing w COVID thread that this damn thing mimics seasonal allergy symptoms.

Ive been battling sinuses since March 6ish. still blowing nose - had some chest congestion around 13th-16th but that subsided.

Now i question if i had covid or just allergies.

Again, my condolences. Tragic for the older generations.

Thank you to all for the T&P. However, I didn't really post the information seeking out sympathy. I know someone who has died from COVID-19. Sometimes these things don't register until it happens to you or someone you know. It's real folks and we have people dying everyday in the US because we don't have enough medical equipment to help them. We don't have a cogent plan in place to deal with what is happening and it will continue to get worst. This isn't supposed to happen in the US.

I have always had horrible allergies. I am talking in the hospital with sinusitis as a kid, sinus infections usually twice a year, for sure 1. Nasal spray, netti pot ect..... A buddy of mine said he started putting a little local honey in his coffee every morning. I have been doing that for 2 years now. I haven't had any problems since then. I thought it was bullshirt but it fixed me. It really might help you too

It appears they've hammered out a deal to bar Trump's business interests from benefiting from the stimulus.

President Donald Trump’s businesses are barred from getting loans or investments under the new $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus deal, according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The Trump Organization, which the president has not divested, is run by his two elder sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. The company controls several hotels, resorts and golf clubs, including Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The resort closed last week, during its peak season.

The problem is that Trump DID say it difinitively.

Trump said: "It's shown very encouraging....very, very encouraging early results. And, we're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. And that's where the FDA has been so great. They...they've gone through the approval process, it's been approved. And they did it...they took it down from many, many months to immediate. So, were' going to be able to make that drug available by prescription or states."

    a few moments later

"Normally, the FDA would take a long time to approve something like that, and its...it was approved very very quickly and it's now approved by prescription."

You are aware that people are scared, right? And that not everyone in this country can afford to go to the doctor?

Scared people with no access to preventative medical care do desperate things. When someone who is supposed to be trustworthy states something as factual, scared people without access to preventative medical care will act on those statements.

This isn't binary. It's not a situation where Trump has zero blame or he is directly responsible for the man's death. It's quite possible he played a part in their decision making process by the sheer weight of his words.

Thank you for saving me the time. Transcribing that clip was my next post.

I agree. We are supposed to be above this sort of thing and it's disgusting that the amount of political crap going on has left us rudderless in a sea of big moneyed interests having their way with us.

I hope that the lasting effect of this is to wake us up to the reality that government - good and effective and efficient government is necessary. Abortion, race issues and climate change should never get in the way of our national security and health of our people and it has.
