I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

It will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere.

Their counter proposal is just more of the same crap they pulled 12 years ago that is nothing more than a take it or leave it proposal. It's a lose/lose option for the D's that they are presenting, if the D's take it as it is, the package will fail to meet their goals, if they even enter negotiations, the R's will paint them as forcing more legislation down their throats.

They need to stand their ground and go with they have put forward and if the R's truly want to be a part, then the negotiating starting point is the D's original proposal. They need to force the R's to explain what the want to cut and their reasoning behind their position, other than cost. Do they feel the states doesn't need Federal aid, etc. ?

The Fed Chair, the incoming Treasury Secretary, various economists all say, go big. Going too big is almost impossible, going too small is easy.

Here we are again.. Republicans offering a proposal that is 1/3rd of what is out there. It's not just about cutting payments from $1400 to $1000, it also cuts who can qualify for it, and a lot of other things. They're only hitting the highlights, but it's missing Hundreds of Billions in other areas...

In the letter Sunday, the senators note that earlier COVID-19 relief packages passed with bipartisan support and that their proposal includes some elements similar to those in Biden's plan, including allocating $160 billion for vaccine development and distribution, testing and tracing, and personal protective equipment.

"Our proposal also includes economic relief for those Americans with the greatest need, providing more targeted assistance than in the Administration's plan," the letter reads. "We propose an additional round of economic impact payments for those families who need assistance the most, including their dependent children and adults."

Their plan calls for $220 billion for a new round of direct payments, with $1,000 sent to individuals making under $40,000 a year and $500 for dependent adults and children. Individuals making over $50,000 and couples making over $100,000 would be ineligible for direct payments.

The plan also calls for $132 billion for unemployment benefits, with $300 per week through the end of June, as opposed to Biden's plan to continue the benefit through September.

Notably, it does not mention state and local aid, which was a key sticking point in past rounds of relief negotiations. Biden's package includes $350 billion in emergency funding for state and local governments.

Yea this never had much potential. In order for the counter to have any significance, it needed to have 10 R's on board, and the 10th most liberal Republican is light years away from the Democrats.

But I think Democrats should at least give it the time of day and say we're willing to do more targeted stimulus checks like you said, but thats about it. Chances are they need to make that accommodation to get Diamond Joe Manchin on board anyway.

I'd like to think they could shelf the min wage fight for another day but I think Democrats are going to dig in on this one.

If there's one thing that absolutely HAS to be in this bill that Republicans need to stop fighting, its the state and local assistance. I don't get why they are resisting it so much, as its been proven over and over that this is the fastest way to stimulate the economy.

Democrats just need to move forward and do what's in the best interest of the Americans who are not batshirt crazy. It is impossible to try to find common ground with people who want you dead.

Apparently, the filters don't catch the word "batshit"

Yeah, I agree. If the following article is true.

There is a decent argument to be made that not everyone who has gotten checks in the past should get another round of checks -- specifically those in the higher income brackets whose jobs were unaffected by the pandemic. I can't pretend to be an economist so I don't have an informed opinion on where the cutoff should be.

It's a shame, because depending on where you live, a family making 100k isn't a lot, and it doesn't mean they haven't been hurt by Covid.

Shockingly, despite my wife no longer working started in Sept, and me being furloughed part time for a few months, we're still above that 100k threshold, but well under the 150k.

I won't cry over this, because other folks need it more than we do, but it's not like we're without need. And lots of people who are in my income range got hit a lot worse, or their 2020 taxes won't shake out in time.

It's weird. It's like who would have thought that 4+ decades of leaving education to the states while developing stealth littoral ships would have any consequences?

Here's a live view of the ISS... looks round to me...
