I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

I must say it is crazy to me that there are areas people don’t wear masks. It’s like 90% outside here. Inside public is 100%. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone in a store without one, or even on busy sidewalks.

It's like 50% outside here, but indoors, I haven't seen a maskless face in months.

Fwiw, I don't wear masks outside myself. I'm either coming or going, so I tend to just put a mask on when I am walking to the store. I don't wear a mask when walking the dog.

    Same.

However, I do avoid the bars and beach here, so I'm likely just not seeing that stuff there.

But our county mandates masks.. even if it is a toothless mandate now.

Yeah, I intentionally avoid anyplace where people might gather. I've eaten out exactly once in the last 8 months. So I probably miss a bit.

Honestly, I'm ok with it. I don't feel like I'm missing all that much. Always was a bit of a homebody anyway.

Impeachment might be the only thing that gets in the way of this. I'd put the over/under at the end of Feb. The House may be done by the 19th.

There are angry people out there, especially Democrats, that Biden's, Ossoff's, & Warnock's
promises about the $2000 stimulus checks turned out to be BS. I know the spin now is $600 + $1400 = $2000, but that's not what was said before the election.

True. But conversely there should be fiscally conservative Republicans and Independents who are overjoyed at the switch in position!

Wait, what? This was always positioned as an additional $1400 to bring the total to $2000. Nobody ever once said an additional $2000.
Can you point out any statement that said that specifically? I posted a video of many examples where Biden and the Georgia Senate candidates specifically said $2000 checks.

The next 6 to 14 weeks could be the worst we've seen so far according to Micheal Osterholm.

First, we need substantially more genomic surveillance. We don’t know how many variants are in the United States or how widespread they are, and we don’t have a rapid-response system to evaluate the effectiveness of the available vaccines and treatments against them. To fix this, the United States must sequence the genome of about 3 to 5 percent of cases — currently as many as 50,000 viruses a week — especially in cases of those who get covid-19 after being infected or vaccinated. Fortunately, President Biden’s administration is hard at work on these urgent responses, including adding sufficient resources in its rescue plan.

Second, we must develop multivalent vaccines — that is, vaccines that can immunize against more than one strain of the same disease. The annual flu vaccine is multivalent against three or four different influenza viruses. We will need the same for covid-19, which the administration is also working on.

Finally, and most importantly, we need greater focus on developing scalable treatments to prevent severe covid-19, shorten the duration of the disease and reduce deaths. At every turn, we have underestimated this virus. The current vaccines are effective — for now. But we should not assume that will remain the case as the virus mutates.

I don’t really live on the Internet. I don’t even have a Twitter account. I watch and listen to a ton of media and talk radio and everyone speaking on it called for an additional $1400. The House Bill passed before the Georgia election was for an additional $1400 bringing the total to $2000, not for a new $2000 check. Biden called the $600 a down payment on a larger stimulus payment.

I’m not wasting my Sunday Googling for sound bites, but I guess I can see how it can be misunderstood by people living 256 characters at a time. That’s why people should strive to be more informed, look at details and attempt to hear more than sound bites.

I’ve never understood it any other way either ^
    $600 passed
Trump said it should be 2k
    House passes $1400 add on
Everything I heard from there was Biden was going for the extra $1400. I’m fairly sure that was even in his initial plan, so it’s never been some hidden item. I never saw or heard anything indicating a full 2k was on the way until this thread.

To the best of my recollection, the $2000 number came from Trump, not Biden.

You just can't respond to one of my posts without throwing out an insult huh? I live 256 characters at a time and I should be more informed?

You don't have time to Google something to support your claim? Then don't make the claim if you can't back it up. I posted a video that showed plenty of examples of $2000 checks and not $1400 checks.

A popular video shared by independent journalist Eoin Higgins begins with Ossoff saying: “We will be able to pass $2,000 stimulus checks for the people next week when we win these races in Georgia and get economic relief directly into the bank accounts of the people who are suffering right now.”

Ossoff clearly said they would pass $2000 checks next week. Also, they were still making the claim about the $2000 checks after the $600 checks went out.

It can be difficult to gather more information and then disseminate it when politicians and parties give speeches lacking in substance or detail or seem contradictory and their legislative bills in state legislatures and/or Congress reflect some of these same sentiments. "Details" can be misleading if their partisan-based and considering our hyper-partisan cable news media networks who give two vastly, wildly different versions of how our country and economy is going right now----"gotcha" sound bites are sort of what we're left with, mostly. How many millions of Americans tune in regularly to watch and listen to weekly news on PBS compared to flashy, highly stylized graphical slide show productions on FOX News, MSNBC, CNN, or even NBC/CBS evening highly news broadcasts?

I didn't intend it as an insult. I wasn't even thinking of you when I typed it. I don't make my disdain for you and people like you a secret, but you aren't as prevalent in my thoughts as you'd apparently like to think. Now, it was someone I respected asking for evidence I'd probably invest the time to back things up. For you? Nah.
