I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Few things there.

1. Most minorities are resistant to wanting vaccines. So, you need to have good PR.

2. I'm not sure if the ratio is the same for people in health care and 65 and older. EDIT.. Actually, looking it up, Black Floridians make up about 9.2% of that over 65 demographic. Still, 5% is low, but that also counts health care workers, and I wonder if that would further suppress the number. So, work needs to be done, but I think it's not as bad as that tweet shows.

3. I'm not sure how you register right now, a lot of it is online, so if that's the case, anyone without a computer is going to have tougher sledding.

There's about 4.5 million people over 65 in Florida, and of that, approximately 413k are black.

The administration of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) undercounted the number of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50 percent, according to a new report from the state attorney general.

The 76-page report from Attorney General Letitia James (D) is based on preliminary findings from an investigation that began in March into nursing home policies that caused abuse and neglect and put the lives of patients and staff in danger.

The state has reported about 8,600 nursing home deaths tied to the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Overall COVID-19 deaths in the Empire State exceed 40,000.

Yes, I saw that. He needs to answer for that.

Only looking at this quickly, I don't think Cuomo is to blame here. This is just the natural order of trying to make the problem someone elses. i.e. the Nursing homes only counted deaths that occured at the home. Not if they were transferred to a hospital.

"Preliminary data analysis obtained from [Office of the Attorney General] inquiries to a portion of nursing homes during the pandemic suggests that many residents died from COVID-19 in hospitals after being transferred from their nursing homes," a report summary said.

In one example, a facility reported five confirmed and six presumed COVID-19 deaths as of Aug. 3 to the state Department of Health. However, the facility reported to the attorney general's office a total of 27 coronavirus deaths at the facility and 13 hospital deaths — a discrepancy of 29 deaths.

I think this is more of an indictment of how badly nursing homes are run.

My dad is set to get his 1st shot a week and a half from now. He is recovering from cancer this past year and is very frail these days. My mom has started sharing COVID conspiracy theories every week now (a lot of her church friends are conspiratorial), and says she won't get the vaccine. The last thing she shared with my family - all really wonderful nice people, I more or less publicly downvoted. I also told her in a pretty long message that she should really stop sharing misinformation.

I don't want to be that guy who loses his parents over idiot conspiracies that keep people from being safe during a damn pandemic. I can tell you its a real problem, and many people in America have already been past that point.

I just got an email that they have 6k vaccines a week in my county. (800k residents). They are doing 80 plus people now, then 65 and older and high risk which I fall in. I expect to have mine probably by the end of February.

I can't confirm them, but a couple stories made the news in MX. There is one tv personality who shared a selfie receiving the shot... apparently "vaccination tourism" is a thing.
