I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

If I had to put money on it...hmm..

I'm going to say amount of Democrats currently protesting to reopen the government with Trump supporters is probably akin to the amount of Republicans, proportionally, involved in the March for Science rallies. Common sense just dictates that, right?

IE very, very minimal if any

To be clear..I try not to operate or base my judgment of scenarios purely on partisan lines. If Republicans were more progressive than Democrats, I'd probably be a Republican. It's just that the GOP has made a name for itself being infamously 'anti-science' in their positions on so many issues.

I think your argument would have been stronger if you pointed out that they want to go back to work.

I remember several here were wanting to bet that the fish tank cleaner poisoning couple were Republicans. Stupid people on both sides.

I have no problem with protesting if it is done peacefully and they don't inconvenience the normal day to day of those caring on their lives.
I also think it is only smart, on 2 levels to protest in masks(if legal) and still work the social distancing. The first reason is safely and the 2nd is that it will take away the first stick that the other side want to use beat in order to dis-empower the protest.

Trump has already screwed over a dozen cities out of 14 million dollars for increased security during his campaign rallies.

He's not goin to rent a venue for 10,000 people and only allow 2,000 to attend instead of being packed in like sardines.

    Ok. I stand corrected?

The problem I have with the protestors isn't of course the fact that they are protesting. The way you're describing above however is not how the protestors are acting, in fact, it's exactly how they try not to act in order to be in defiance of science and reason in general, which they view through the lens of 'government oppression'.

The biggest issue I have is that they are proudly becoming vectors of disease simply to be partisan.

Warning, the article may have a couple of words and concepts that are NSFW (unless you are working from home I guess).

Personally, the article reminds me of why I love America.

This just seems like touchdown dancing over being imbeciles, but I guess folks are free to do that. Merica and stuff.

I wonder if folks also groan about 'oppressive government' telling them to leave their homes when a Cat 5 hurricane is incoming as well?

Well, lets be fair, to most of us it is about the political fallout from the corona virus. For some, I am not going to name names, it is about Trump and only Trump.
I agree, but (as I'm sure you are not surprised about) I think we are thinking of a completely different set of unnamed people as it being about Trump and only Trump.

Almost all of the countries of Western Europe are showing signs of the virus waning except Sweden, Netherlands and the UK. I don't know what is going on with the Netherlands, but the UK was very late to implement precautions, and Sweden still hasn't fully implemented precautions. Sweden's per capita infection rate seems a lot lower than Italy's, but they've also tested much fewer per case, so their positive rate per test is about 20% and so their actual per capita infections is probably higher than confirmed.

I bet we can name a few that we agree on.

Enlisting citizens to turn in their friends, family members and neighbors is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes, isn't it?

    Is that right?

Yep, along with "if you see something, say something", and so on. The government has always enlisted citizens to report crimes.

I actually probably like the practice less than you do, but I'm not sure this is a huge step towards an authoritarian regime.

Let's put it another way...Friends, family members and neighbors putting others in danger of unnecessary sickness is the definition of patriotic, right?

I don't know why you would suspect you like it any less than I do, but maybe. I am suspicious of government intrusions on their citizens during "emergencies," I think history shows that those emergencies have a way of being extended out and the intrusions kept in place.
