Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/17/sup...y-that-refuses-to-work-with-lgbt-couples.html

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

A new amendment to Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill would require schools to inform parents of their children's sexual orientation within six weeks of learning the student isn't straight,NBC affiliate WFLA reported on Monday.

The amendment was filed Friday by the bill's co-sponsor, state Rep. Joe Harding (R).

The bill, which has gained national attention and pushback, bars educators in Florida from talking about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary schools. Parents would be able to take legal action against school districts they believe have violated the measure.

The original version of the legislation required schools to inform families of their child's LGBTQ+ status but gave an option for exemption for the outing in cases where educators feared it could lead to abuse, neglect or abandonment.

The amendment offers no such exception........

What the ever-loving fork is wrong with people? This is going to get some kids beaten, kicked out of their homes, ostracized from their family and friends, etc. fork anyone who supports this kind of shirt.

Can you imagine the number of times a school would have a teachers or teachers aid overhear a remark by a student made in jest to another student and then report that to the office, and ... .

I bet those reports by the schools to the parents would have an error rate that would border at best on 50%, and of the reports that did get it correct, almost all of those parents would already have known that their kid was not heterosexual.

It's the dumbest idea I think I've seen all year. (The year is still early.)

Where the hell did this idea come from? Nuts.

The GOP is taking us toward a Christian Ethno-State. They are the Taliban, just a different book.

If we play along and pretend we are the taliban, will we also get free weapons, tanks, helicopters and cash or are those just for the middle eastern chapters?

You don’t need to pretend. Your side is just actively just doing it. I wish it were a joke, but it’s not. You guys actually want to rule everyone in this country by your religious beliefs, even if we don’t subscribe to them. I’ve lost the ability to think this is funny.

Youngkin, who was supposed to be some sort of “moderate”, has a tip line so parents can report teachers they think are saying things they shouldn’t say. Lots of states are passing laws so that parents can just randomly sue schools if the teachers mention certain words, or even acknowledge that gay people exist. Imagine turning teachers into some sort of “enemy”, rather than having calm rational discussions about the issues. Let’s just abolish the mere mention of everything we don’t want to hear about. Totalitarianism. Get rid of books. It’s ridiculous.

You may want to live like this, but it’s not American. It’s closer to Soviet Russia or Communist China, or yes, the Taliban, than America. And yet, you guys gaslight that you’re for “freedom”. You want freedom from responsibility to follow public health measures that save lives, and then you turn around and want to actively punish people who don’t adhere to your religious beliefs. Freedom only for you, not for me. Cripes, I’ve never felt so bad about my country in my whole long life. Even during the sixties, I never felt this bad about the way things are going here.

Red herring fallacy happens when one derails the original issue to a different, irrelevant one. It’s a deliberate attempt to move the focus away from a certain topic.

I guess you haven't been making any growth.

Not even in 1968, a year some call one of the most consequential in our history, did I feel that we would lose what makes us who we are. Today I worry we will if we haven't already.
