Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/17/sup...y-that-refuses-to-work-with-lgbt-couples.html

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

Should a child be punished (never mind the severity) for using incorrect pronouns in school?
Also never mind that the pronouns used were actually grammatically correct. If this was an exercise in English class, the kid would have received an 'A' or correct pronoun usage.

Was the child punished? Did that actually happen? I don't know any of that from that article.

I would bet that if a boy called a girl "he" over and over (against her will), there would probably be consequences/reprimands in any classroom. Children aren't going to school to be bullied by other children. A little bit of mutual respect is required at all schools.

The family had to hire a lawyer, so I would say some type of punishment happened.

It was one person that was called the wrong pronoun. The pronoun they demanded to be called in 'they', so again, it was a singular person. Why does that kid have to pretend that single person is multiple people?

It also sounds like the person was berating another kid for using the wrong pronoun, wonder where that kid picked that up from? You can present yourself however you like but don't get to determine how other process that information. Crazy town.

They, their, and them have been used as singular pronouns since long before you and I were born, as in the following sentence:

"I hear that the boss is interviewing candidates for Steve's old job. Whoever it is, I hope they keep their office tidy and clean up after themselves in the break room... unlike Steve."

Did you read that and at any point wonder why multiple people were being hired to fill Steve's one job?

No, I was under impression they were interviewing a group of people to fill steves job. Once someone is hired, then they can use a singular pronoun until then, we discussing a member of a group, you can use 'they and them'.

"that is great that Samantha got Steve's old job. From my experience with her in accounting, she will keep her desk spotless"

Regardless of this english lesson, you think this was a good decision by the school board? Don't worry, they are now trying to set it up where they can suspend kindergarteners for using correct grammar.

    https://news.yahoo.com/fairfax-public-schools-consider-rule-144934481.html

"The school board of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Fairfax, Virginia, is reviewing updated rules that could potentially expose students to suspension or expulsion for "maliciously misgendering" their peers based on "frequency and intensity."

The Fairfax County Public Schools Students Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) handbook, which will be voted on May 26, includes in its updated version rules that make "malicious deadnaming" and "malicious misgendering" of classmates a Level 4 offense, which allows for a suspension up to five days "if frequency and intensity are present," according to page 19 of the document.

"Using slurs based upon the actual or perceived gender identity" is forbidden under the rules of the document, "which includes, but is not limited to, malicious deadnaming or malicious misgendering."

The document defines "deadnaming" as "when someone, intentionally or not, refers to a person who is transgender or gender-expansive by a name other than their own chosen name."

The handbook explains that "Level 4 responses" include individualized intervention that often requires disciplinary action. The principal is able to refer such violations to the superintendent, which the document says "may result in a number of different responses based on circumstances and rarely results in an expulsion."

Level 5 offenses include things such as homicide, sexual assault and illegal possession of drugs or weapons."

My example did not discuss a member of a group, it discussed a specific person about whom no details are known. The person in this example is the one who is hired. Your inability to understand both English and simple concepts is noted, however.

As for the punishment, I don't know what exactly was levied. Based on what you quoted in this post, though, I will say that willfully and repeatedly bullying someone- which deadnaming and misgendering is- should absolutely result in some sort of punishment, just like if someone was bullied for sexual orientation, race, or any other innate characteristic.

It's an actual definition of the word "they". There should be no problem with using "they" to refer to a person who is non-binary or trans. But also, they could have just said the kids name, instead of using they, if it made them feel so uncomfortable. There were options, but they chose the worse one, meant to ridicule and demean. So I'm not going to be taking up the cause of this kid or their parents.

The gay = pedophile (or now 'groomer) thing needs to stop
    =======================================

Shira Berkowitz loved being a counselor at an overnight summer camp in Minnesota. In 2007, Berkowitz, then 22, was primed to become the program director for ninth-graders, but then a message arrived: Please don’t come back to camp.

Staff at the camp, which Berkowitz requested not be named, “would say inappropriate things about my sexuality, and question whether it was right that I would be in the same cabin of same-sex kids,” said Berkowitz, who identifies as queer.

Parents also voiced concern about Berkowitz’s gender identity and sexuality, and Berkowitz believes the controversy led the camp to ask them not to return the following summer.

While the incident was profoundly upsetting, Berkowitz, having grown up attending and appreciating Jewish summer camps, decided to give camp another go.

They went on to work at another Jewish overnight program in Rocky Mount, Mo. Berkowitz described the camp as “a very accepting place to be, but it was also very isolating to be one of the only queer people at camp.”

So, along with a few others, Berkowitz has created a nondenominational camp that directly caters to LGBTQ campers and staff.

At the time, “we had no idea the real need that was out there for this camp,” Berkowitz said of Camp Indigo Point, a one-week program for LGBTQ kids and counselors. The inaugural session will start June 12...........

"candidates' now mean a single person? Ok. Sure. Are we sure my grasp of the english language is the one we should be questioning?

Why is it bulling to use the correct pronouns...in a school? Seems like correct grammar would be encouraged. But yeah, no gender theory happening in schools at all. It must be a Q conspiracy theory, right?

You are either too disingenuous or too ignorant to have this conversation with.

Coming from the person who thinks men can have babies? I love how when you guys have no actual facts to back up your crazy ideas, you then turn to the 'your too dumb to discuss this with', which, to be fair is better than the mental midgets that just post cute little gifs.

So tell me the difference between 'candidates' and 'candidate' if I am being disingenuous and ignorant?

I did explain it to you. The person speaking in my example was not referring to every single candidate, thus they were not referring to a pluralized group. They were referring to the one candidate that was going to be hired to fill the role.

And for the record, ignorant has nothing to do with your intelligence. It is a reflection of knowledge. The smartest people in the world are ignorant when it comes to certain topics.

If you were referring to person who would in the job, you could also use 'he' as well. 'He' is a gender neutral unknown pronoun, but I have a feeling that is problematic as well.

No, "he" isn't gender neutral. People have used "he" for a long time to refer to an unknown person but that's just old assumptions of gender. "They/them" is the correct term for an unknown person.

"When a customer walks in the store, greet them with a smile and say 'Welcome to Moe's!' and ask if they have been to Moe's before."

So just one customer we are worried about coming into the store, or are we addressing all the customers that walk through the door? Probably all customers, so again plural. Addressing a single person in a conversation as 'they' is just dumb.

I see you are ignorant when it comes to proper grammar. both the MLA style and the APA style of writing disagrees with you:

This is twice now that you've been shown that you are wrong. I await your apology and retraction.

    smh

Obviously "they" is being used correctly here: "When a customer walks in the store, greet them with a smile and say 'Welcome to Moe's!' and ask if they have been to Moe's before."

    Farb, are you just trolling?
