Saw this on Twitter, and am late to get somewhere so maybe someone else can flesh this out. When it comes to Russia vs Ukraine, Tucker is rooting for Russia.

So the choice he set up is between a fledgling democracy, and one of the most corrupt oligarchies in the world, one country who is an ally and one an antagonist, and he chooses the corrupt oligarchy who is our antagonist?

    why would he say that?

There’s a video clip, should you care to go look at it.

I will admit it’s a very short clip, so I was hoping to get more context.

At the end of the show, apparently he said "of course [he] was joking". Also from a brief twitter clip, so take that FWIW. Seems weak to me.

I don't know what clip it was.

Here is what I know about Tucker's views generally:

He thinks all of this Russia hysteria is madness. It seems people consider Russia our biggest threat, when it is clearly China.

He wants the US to be much more limited in sending our troops and our money around the world.

He thinks it is absolutely asinine that if you hold those two views that you are considered to be a Russian agent.

If you have the clip I will be glad to watch it.

China is our biggest competitor, but they aren't nearly the same level of threat as Russia.

China needs us to buy their stuff. Russia wants us to burn each others homes to the ground.

That's a very good characterization of the relationships. As China's top customer they will always have an interest in our continuing financial success. Russia, under Putin, is still playing water-downed Cold War games.

Why would he think that? I don’t believe he was joking, btw. He also said “I don’t care” when the other man responded about preserving democracy in Ukraine.

oh and thanks buzd for the link. I had to leave just after I saw it.

At the end of the show, he explains what he meant as far as not really caring one way or the other. I wonder if his guest on that show that is all about protecting democracy around the globe was all in on the Vietnam war and Iraq?
I also remember along time ago when Obama mocked somebody (Romney i think) for bring up Russia as any type of threat: "80s called and want their foreign policy back".

This does bring up an interesting topic on why liberals perceive Russia as the bigger threat and Conservatives think China is the lion in the grass. Maybe a good thread.

I suspect he was trying to delegitimize the US providing support for Ukraine so withholding the aid doesn’t seem so bad.

He probably added the joking part at the end because one of his producers told him what he said was borderline treason.

Farb, you may have a good idea for a thread, but I don’t think Tucker was even considering China. He was explicitly comparing Ukraine and Russia, and he backs Russia over Ukraine. It’s an odd choice for an American to make.

I agree in that specific exchange he was not thinking of china at all, however, I watch his show a lot and he ranks China well above Russia on his threat index.

I think it’s weird to try to rank them. Neither should be considered our friend, however China definitely needs us to keep buying goods from them. Putin just hates us and wants to destroy us, preferably by starting a new civil war.

Put another way, China wants to bury us economically, but not destroy us because they want to keep the profitable American market strong. Putin just wants to bury us, see us go up in flames.

It’s very odd for Carlson to be pulling for Russia over Ukraine, who is reforming and a fledgling democracy. I can’t understand why he would prefer that.
