    Everything I've seen and heard says that the split second Donald Trump is no longer president there will be flood of charges waiting for him

    And if he resigns and Pence pardons him there are a ton of state charges as an understudy waiting in the wings if the fed charges can't perform

    What do you think the likelihood of there being a jail sentence?

    In every movie and TV show I've ever seen, in every political thriller I've ever read about a criminal and corrupt president there is ALWAYS some version of;

    "We can't do that to the country",

    "A trial would tear the country apart",

    "For the nation to heal we need to move on" etc.

    Would life imitate art?

    Even with the charges, even with the proof the charges are true will the powers that be decide, "we can't do that to the country"?

    I believe NYC (maybe Manhattan?) also has active investigations.

    article from before the election
    =========================
    ...........Some have suggested a formal apparatus for investigating Trump after he leaves office. Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, has floated the creation of a "Presidential Crimes Commission," made up of independent prosecutors who can examine "those who enabled a corrupt president," as he put it in an August tweet. "Example 1: Sabotaging the mail to win an election."

    The most serious legal threat facing Trump is the Manhattan district attorney's broad criminal investigation into the financial workings of the Trump Organization. Prosecutors have suggested in court filings that the investigation could examine whether the President and his company engaged in bank fraud, insurance fraud, criminal tax fraud and falsification of business records..............

    This article from AP is both timely and a great summation of this discussion.

    I don't think he does a moment of time. I am not even sure he will ever face meaningful charges in any court.

    I do wonder, though, if he were to resign in order for Pence to pardon him, what the Trump cult response would be. I mean, I know they would find a way to excuse it. I just wonder what the logic would be.

    Pretty simple, I think, it would be that he simply had to do it to protect against the radical, crooked left and establishment that will now be out for revenge against him.

    Do you mean his health? We really aren't sure. In typical strong man playbook of never showing weakness, we can only guess at his general health. We know he took unplanned trip Walter Reed before covid. We also know his cholesterol score is high, and a climbing calcium score. I assume Trump is probably pushing 300 pounds, but he does a decent amount of recreational activity with the golfing.

    It's crazy to me that Trump hasn't cleaned up his diet. It's really all he would have to do to get his heart disease under control. He was blessed with good genetics overall.

    My question is IF the SDNY does press charges, which I'm not sure they will. When? Surely they already have a case ready to go, if they have been building one over the last four years.
    I just want him to live long enough to wear an orange jumpsuit (to match his skin) and see the inside of a jail cell. Looks like it will be a state facility and they're less posh than the federal farm.

    Yeah, pretty much. They'll say it's a conspiracy to destroy Trump and that he needs protection.

    There is a much bigger political incentive to prosecute him, and his administration if he announces a 2024 run. I feel like the failure to prosecute Bush/Cheney lead to what we saw in the Trump administration.

    Logic? :unsure: You lost me there.

    I don't think that's the best word to describe what they would come up with. :hihi:

    War crimes - Bush and Cheney both could have been shipped off to Hague

    Iraq war? If Bush acted on intel he had along with the rest of Congress, where is the crime? I never was a fan of the Iraq war, but a lot of people went along with it based on faulty evidence. I don't buy that Bush knew it was faulty. Cheney, no idea. But it's never been proven that they knew that as far as I know.

    Seriously? They were absolutely the ones pushing the false narrative, if you don't think they knew and were complicit then I have some swamp land in Kazakhstan .....

    I actually don't. And regardless, it's never been close to proven. If it was, there would have been charges and people paying the price for it. The Iraq war was started based on faulty intelligence where everyone including Colin Powell and Congress believed the evidence was credible enough that even the UN agreed they thought was real.

    I can't remember who was responsible for the bad intelligence, but I want to say something got lost between the hard intel on the ground and when it arrived at it's destination at DOD and the White House. I wasn't a fan of Bush or his administration, but this wasn't on him. I don't think he's smart enough to pull something like that off and get away with it.

    Well, that leaves two possibilities:

    1) George W. Bush was presented with evidence that showed that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction, and he decided to lie and say they did so that we could invade their country.

    2) George W. Bush was presented with evidence that showed that Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction, and he decided to invade their country to prevent them from using them (either as actual weapons, or as threats).

    Since 1 seems incredibly unlikely and there has been no evidence shown to support that, I'm going to go with option 2.
