This is, IMO, going to be a big topic in the coming year. Republicans have stated their aim to make voting more restrictive in just about every state where they have the means to do so. Democrats would like to pass the Voting Rights Bill named after John Lewis. I’m going to go look up the map of all the states which have pending legislation to restrict voting. Now that we have the election in the rear view, I thought we could try to make this a general discussion thread, where people who have concerns about voting abuses can post as well and we can discuss it from both sides. Please keep memes out of this thread and put them in the boards where we go to talk about the other side, lol.

Mary Howard-Elley fervently believes illegal immigration in the U.S. is a critical problem that only former President Donald Trump can solve. She says the continuation of his border wall and promised mass deportations will make the country safer.

She agrees with Trump’s unfounded claims that Democrats are opening the borders to allow noncitizens to vote, fearing that it could ultimately cost him the election.

Howard-Elley didn’t pay much attention when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott helped fuel that narrative by announcing that the state had removed thousands of supposed noncitizens from its rolls, claiming some had a history of voting.

Then the U.S. citizen learned she was among them.

The elections office in Montgomery County, just north of Houston, had sent Howard-Elley a letter in late January saying that she had been flagged after she indicated that she was not a U.S. citizen in response to a jury summons. She had 30 days to provide the county proof of citizenship or she would be removed from the voter rolls, according to the letter.

The retired Transportation Security Administration agent was confused by how the county could come to that conclusion. And she seethed at the idea that anyone would question the citizenship of a former federal employee with the “whitest name you could have.”

“Who is allowing people to do this to United States citizens? I understand we have a problem with immigration, but come on now,” Howard-Elley said in an interview.

The 52-year-old disputes the county’s claim that she responded to the jury duty summons by saying she was not a citizen. Instead, Howard-Elley said, she called and asked to be exempted from jury duty because of guardianship duties for three of her grandchildren.

The Montgomery County district clerk’s office, which organizes jury duty, did not respond to repeated questions and denied a public records request for Howard-Elley’s response to the jury summons, asserting it was exempt from disclosure.

Regardless of how she was flagged as a noncitizen, Howard-Elley wanted to ensure she could vote. She ordered several copies of her certified Louisiana birth certificate and confirmed receipt with an elections office employee. She thought the matter was resolved.

But Howard-Elley’s registration was not reinstated, making her the 10th U.S. citizen identified by ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and Votebeat who was removed from the rolls as a potential noncitizen. The news organizations tracked them down as part of an investigation that found Abbott’s claims about the state removing more than 6,500 noncitizens were likely inflated and, in some cases, wrong...................

"She intends to cast her ballot for Trump."

She only has herself to blame for the mess voting has become, so not feeling the least bit sorry for her. Stop voting for authoritarians trying to block people from voting and we won't have these problems. It's stupid that we do and stupid people keep voting to keep it that way.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court ruled Monday that mail-in ballots with smudged, indecipherable or missing postmarks can be counted for up to three days after polls close on Election Day.

The state’s highest court rejected a bid by state and national Republicans, former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and a voter, Scott Johnston, to block them from being counted. Among the GOP arguments was that mail ballots unfairly benefit Democratic voters.

The court challenge came after Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, a Democrat, told county election officials in May that ballots without a visible postmark should be counted until 5 p.m. the Friday after Election Day. This year, that is Nov. 8.

Aguilar said the ruling “will allow election administration in Nevada to continue uninterrupted, without the risk of disenfranchising voters through no fault of their own.”

In a statement, he also praised election workers “who have dedicated additional resources to securely process mail more efficiently this cycle.”…….

This Supreme Court is a stain on America. You aren’t supposed to purge voters so close to an election that they cannot get their vote reinstated. We cannot ignore this court, they are actively working against democracy. They didn’t even write an opinion, just made a 6-3 decision. The case showed that using the DMV records caused about 1600 eligible voters to lose their right to vote. A Trump-appointed lower judge had stayed it, agreeing it was too close to the election and disenfranchised people who indeed have the right to vote. I’m just so disgusted with this sham court.

I can tell you this, if I'm not allowed to vote come Tuesday, the whole country will hear about it.

Well, not really, but it won't be a pretty scene if they try to keep me from voting, lol.

Keep checking between now and then. Request a provisional ballot if they deny you.

I know I'm registered but I haven't checked status to see if they somehow tried to remove me from the rolls.

That’s what their purge is doing - removing people from the rolls. The 1600 affected were non-citizens when they applied for the license at the DMV, but became naturalized at some point after that. The BMV evidently doesn’t ever update that box they checked as a non-citizen at the BMV. So even though they are fully citizens now, they will be purged from the rolls. I don’t know if VA allows same day registration - but even if they do they would probably have to bring proof of citizenship and who walks around with that?

Understood but your status should be indicated so if it changes, you’d know ahead of time.

Worst case, request the provisional ballot.

Is there a specific concern you might get purged? (I haven’t read the entire thread). Is it something you can challenge or correct, rather than waiting until Tuesday?

I'm a citizen. I'm a little more concerned about my wife who is a naturalized citizen. I don't think either of us will have an issue, but will check today just to be sure.

We both voted in the last presidential election.

You would think such a decision would require some kind of opinion.

When you can’t really explain your reasoning because it is this: “I need my side to win.”

They are hyper-partisan, the masks are off. Their immunity decision took care of that, but we all knew it before that anyway.
