The football board had the very useful Daily Trump Tracker thread, which was a good place to briefly discuss the latest ridiculous thing that might have ended 97% of prior Presidential administrations even if it didn't necessarily justify an entire thread devoted to it in 2017-2019 (because of the sheer volume of these things). Since I don't see anything like that here already, I'll add one myself.

We'll see what the comments actually are if anything comes of it, it does sound like she make have an axe to grind, but if she really has tapes proving what she say that's different
    =============================================

Melania Trump will speak at the Republican national convention on Tuesday night, in the shadow of an extraordinary report that she was taped making derogatory comments about her husband’s adult children and even Donald Trump himself.

On Monday the media reporter Yashar Ali cited unnamed sources in reporting that Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former friend and adviser, “taped the first lady” and plans to share the remarks in her book.

They include “harsh comments about Ivanka Trump, the president’s elder daughter and a senior adviser”, Ali wrote.

Melania & Me is out on 1 September......

In publicity material, the publisher says Wolkoff, a longterm friend of Melania Trump “was recruited to help produce the 58th presidential inauguration and to become the first lady’s trusted adviser”.

“…Then it all fell apart when she was made the scapegoat for inauguration finance irregularities. Melania could have defended her innocent friend and confidant, but she stood by her man, knowing full well who was really to blame. The betrayal nearly destroyed Wolkoff.”..............

I thought this was a good, nonpartisan read on how the news tries to, well, make the news more exciting as it discusses the polling. It’s a whole thread, but very worth it.

Wondering why the Hatch Act can be violated so brazenly by this Administration with zero consequences?

“Such blatant disregard of an important statute should be enormously disturbing, but the Trump administration doesn’t care. In fact, it has quietly gutted the federal agency, the Merit Systems Protection Board, that is responsible for enforcing this law. The board also enforces civil service protections for federal workers, including whistleblower safeguards.

But since 2019, the Merit Systems Protection Board has had no members, and it had only one member from 2017 to 2019. President Trump is responsible for appointing its members, but he has not done so, effectively nullifying the agency and its enforcement of crucial federal laws.

An underlying concern of the Hatch Act is that it is wrong for an incumbent to use the resources of the federal government, its employees or its financial resources, to help an election campaign. It is not fair and it distorts the democratic process. Yet that is exactly what Trump is doing by using the White House to deliver his acceptance speech.”

So, by not filling these positions Trump has effectively gotten rid of the Hatch Act and can use all the resources of the Federal Government to aid his re-election campaign. Even using official acts (a pardon and bestowing citizenships) as political stunts. I believe both were illegal.

Trump is clearly contemptuous of the rule of law. We simply cannot afford to reward this.

Hey look, taxpayer money is being used to assemble a "dossier" on a reporter for interfering with the President's personal business (his personal company getting paid by the government!!) by writing about it.

I love this classic quote from the WaPo article linked in the thread:

On the campaign trail in 2016, Trump had offered one simple way to underline his separation from his properties: He just wouldn’t visit.

“I may never see these places again,” Trump said during a rally in August 2016. “Because I’m going to be working for you. I’m not going to have time to go play golf. Believe me.”

I've mentioned Daniel Dale, the Toronto Star reporter, who began fact checking Trump on his own time - working in the US for the Star.

here he goes through 20 'lies' in 3 minutes. I don't really care for AC generally, and that includes - here - his smug look at the camera at the end.

I think Dale is a real reporter. I think AC is just an entertainment personality.

Dale has always been meticulous and supports his claims and cross-checks and verifies. And fact checking is not just about whether or not a statement is true/false, but also when there's context that might be relevant.

Trump is a habitual liar who simply can't help himself. Watching the press conference of him in Lake Charles just a minute ago, I heard him lie and say Hurricane Laura became a Category 5 storm. Laura never was classified as a 5 at any point of its development yet Trump couldn't help himself to inflate the numbers because that's what he does.

Only the ignorant don’t learn from history.

taking the military for granted is akin to Hillary ignoring the Blue Wall.

I can say (anecdotally of course) that my Ret. Lt. Col father and all of his 1969 Air Force Academy graduating class that I know despise him. Trump’s flippant discussion of Vietnam, his utter disdain for the troops he sends into harms way, and his treatment of fallen servicemen made my father say things about him he never said about Pol Pot. Literally wishes death on him. My dad knows Greg Popovich from the academy; ‘72 grad. He knew (conversationally) Senator McCain. The way these men have been talked about by our “president” is disgusting and a lot of lifetime Military families can no longer excuse his mouth.

    Wow. That's pretty huge.

that's.... shocking. To the point it stretches credulity.

Although when we were talking earlier about Trump being seen as the "law and order" and "strength and power" candidate, maybe the media is indeed overestimating and/or buying into a narrative that Trump is trusted with security in the face of violence and threats
